My premise is that we aren't bad enough to net a top-8 pick in the draft - so our pick will be going to Charlotte as part of the BG trade.

Seems as though our only realistic options are:

1) to trade a valuable asset, like Monroe?

or

2) take on crap contracts for the expirings of Stuckey/CV



#1 pro - Monroe could net us the most bang for our buck (ie, get us the highest pick)
#1 con - Trading Monroe would feel like we're re-starting the rebuild.

#2 pro - we get good value for meh players
#2 con - not sure there are contracts bad enough to warrant us a good enough pick.

A third option, although a variation of what you already have - We could trade something to Charlotte to increase the protection on our pick that we gave them. That might be less expensive than getting another pick.

I actually thought during the draft we should have done the opposite. Figuring that we will get into the playoffs and they would get our pick anyway, and that they wanted Zeller (who could have been taken at #8), we should have traded draft picks this year and just give them our pick unrestricted for next year. Then we could have gotten McLemore or Noel, although it looks like KCP will do just fine for us.

The only way we're getting a first rounder in 2014 is for Stuckey or CV - and it won't be a lottery pick. Some team that is dying to get ready for FA next summer and wants to clear salary.

Given we might have 15 million in cap room anyway, we might just hold onto those guys and go after a top free agent myself.

amnesty Bengo to create immediate cap-space would have worked great as well, plus we'd still have our pick, but El Pompadour had to save his money, hair gel doesn't come cheap.

I think I'd rather have the cap space again next summer and the one after that and make the playoffs this season (turning the pick into meh), then have the pick.

It's turned out really well for us. Time to accept that and move on.

Two ways- lose a lot again or trade for one. That's it.

They could probably net a mid- to late-first rounder for Stuckey, Knight or KCP.

I'd start with being really bad, that might do it for us.

Although with our luck we'll end with the worst record, but somehow the lottery will give us the 9th pick which will go to Charlotte.

This is interesting, although I don't see us having the assets to get it done.

1) We're not going to offer a core piece (Knight, KCP, JSmoove, Moose, Dre) just to add more protection onto the pick

2) Are guys like Singler, Middleton, Bynum, Jerebko, etc enough to sway them? Not likely

What teams are going to want to clear cap bad enough to go after LeBron/Wade/Melo/Bosh/etc that they will give us a pick for Stuckey/CV? We need to target a team with a realistic shot to add a top talent (team with history and good market?) and they can't be a team who will have a late 1st rounder. Should target a team who might pick in the 10-18 range, preferably. Lakers for Nash? Boston for Gerald Wallace?

if they had hung onto him for one more year and amnestied him this year it would have cost around 9 mil, which is the cost of doing business. if you choose to purchase a professional franchise your going to have to eat money at times.

as of last year 14 or 15 other owners had used the amnesty (not sure if anyone used it this off-season). the wizards owner bit a 30+ million dollar bullet to make Blatche go away, so its not unheard of for an NBA owner to pull money out of their pocket for the betterment of the their team.

Sounds good, I just worry about with as hyped as next season's draft is already becoming....will we be able to trade Monroe to someone for a high enough pick to get Jabari Parker? I mean in a perfect world, he'd be our #1 draft target (since nobody is trading us the #1 pick and Wiggins).

He's not bringing back a top 5 pick.

We don't need anymore rookies. I'm glad we don't have any picks next year. If we somehow can get a #1 pick it should be used in conjunction with our expiring contracts towards a big trade for another proven veteran like Rondo. Even if we had a #1 pick what would we use it on? Positions 2-5 are set in terms of need. Even though KCP is unproven they aren't going to draft another SG. Only position of need is PG and no way they would start a rookie PG on a team trying to advance in the playoffs. There's just no need for that pick anymore. Looking back now that we got Smith and Chauncey with the capspace, I can say it was definitely the right move to make that trade.

I don't want another rookie unless it's in the 18-30 range.

This is the good question. Especially target a team that thinks they will make the playoff, but are only an injury away from being in the lottery. Denver? Milwaukee? Utah?

We already have our 2014 first rounder, his name is Josh Smith. That's how Dumars spent the cap space he got for it.
