Are we done for the summer?

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Mon Jul 29, 2013 9:38 pm

It's a long time until October :-(

All the good free agents have signed, trade market seems to be slowing down, so it seems like we may be done for the summer.

We've got a full roster, so we still need to decide on Siva.

Everyone knows we have CV and Stuckey available, but if they haven't made a deal for cap space yet, it seems like that will have to wait until the trade deadline.

I think we're done. It's been a good summer, I'm excited about our team, but I think we're set until October.

I think we're done too.

All the rumored stuff that came up look to be squashed now.
Unless Boston have a very unexpected change of heart, i think we're all done.

would it make sense to trade Stuckey and CV for Okafor? 2 expirings for 1, then sign Siva. I have a feeling Stuckey's presence will hinder any positive that Chauncey can provide Knight. so many things have to go right for Stuckey and CV's trade value to increase.. the cap space from them next year itself will be more valuable than anything they can potentially fetch in a trade, so why not do a 2 for 1?

Why would Washington do that deal?

I dont think so.

I love the potential of this Pistons team, but if you honestly take of your Pistons colored sunglasses and subjectively look at this roster, then you see that they are the mix for the 7-12 spots.

It's a fairly poor built team right with some amazing pieces that they could build around.

I'm not sure what other moves are available.

I don't get the impression the Pistons are actively looking for trades right now, we're just getting repeated insistence that they're "open" to them.

I have to assume Joe is looking for trades considering we have logjams in some areas and holes in others. As much as others here don't like it I believe he is looking to deal Monroe and Stuckey together in a package.

I would much rather stick with Knight, Jennings is garbage.

BK is a pg that can't pass or a 2 guard that is undersized. Good kid that hustles. Maybe he will develop. Maybe Joe and Chauncey can harness Jennings.

I completely agree. He may actually make this team worse with his chucking tendencies and inefficiency coupled with his atrocious perimeter defense. And chemistry can outdo talent when talent fails to mesh.

There aren't any players currently being shopped for trade. Joe's best play is to be passive and only engage installs when a team comes to him.

You never know if Miami decides they want cap space next summer and offers us D-Wade for our expiring and a second round pick. You just never know.

Jennings isn't very good and adding him does nothing to address the problems the team has.

I believe our best bet is to wait it out...

Larry Coon has predicted a $62 mil cap for next off-season... which means we could have between $6-10 mil in cap space if we let all expirings walk but give Monroe the maximum.

That's a lot of space we could have...

and if another team is already looking at having $10 mil in cap space and wants more we have pieces that can get them more...

CV and Stuckey should be attractive trade chips... but I believe they need to play to a certain standard before we could actually get reasonable value for them.

And then it comes down to IF we want what is offered to us for those guys OR if we believe we can get a better piece (or pieces) with the cap space we're going to have.

The contracts handed out this summer suggest many teams are looking at 2014... they'll want to spend... Joe's job is to take advantage of some foolish GM that thinks he can land something significant but in reality will strike out (like the Bucks)

We could make a list of teams that fall into that category and break it down... but it's a long season and perhaps we'd be better off doing it in November or something

Dumars knows this team has a low ceiling because of the holes we have and with his job being on the line he's not going to sit around and hope to sneak in the playoffs when he knows that might not be enough to keep his job.

I think we are done for the summer. IF Joe decides to trade CV/Stuck it won't be until the deadline. If he doesn't as Pharoah said, at least we should have a decent amount of cap space for next offseason.

Now we're going to have to wait a long 3 months for the season to start :(

I may be incorrect on this, but I'm pretty sure the Pacers were in a similar postion with Hibbert in the summer of '12 as we will be with Monroe in '14. I believe we'll have more cap to use if we sign someone before Greg as his salary will be represented by his cap hold (~$10 mil) instead of a new contract. It'd be great to have ~$10 mil in cap space to sign a starting guard, then using Monroe's bird rights to go over the cap and sign him to a front loaded deal. If that's the course we are going to take then I think it's imperative we dump Jerebko.

I don't believe Joe is thinking about cap space in '14 though, I think it's clear the aim is to get as good as we can right away.

well we have 16 guys, so its unlikely we add anyone else. however i think its very likely we are looking to do a 2 for 1 trade to take it down to 15 rather than just letting siva or someone else play elsewhere.
so i wouldnt say without doubt we are done, but unless a cant miss trade arises, the only other move will likely be to convince siva to play overseas or cutting him.

I actually don't know what Monroe's cap hold would be... I'd have to go check out the Larry Coon FAQ thing and find out...

but IF Monroe's cap hold is less than what his new contract would be then yes, obviously you'd spend your cap space and then exceed the cap to retain Monroe.

Dumping Jerebko doesn't impact that though
