I'm very curious what this trade did financially. Can someone with more knowledge about the NBA cap and salaries post a current projection of where we stand for this year through when we will have to pay Drummond max $. Will most of the money from the Stuckey/CV contracts have be be spent on Moose or will we be able to add a somewhat significant piece next year? Thanks in advance.

Drummond's max deal would actually kick in after 3 more seasons so right when Brandon Jennings deal would be done with. No need to worry there unless Jennings also turns into an all-star and key member of a contending team... Then we might be stuck making a luxury tax decision.

Next year, with Monroe's big contract kicking in and Jennings now on the team we most likely will only have the Mid Level Exception to spend to try and improve our team.

I believe our cap number is around 60 million. We went slightly over the cap with this deal but could per NBA league trade rules and being a non tax paying offender under the new CBA. I'm not sure Joe D is done yet though.

Odds are pretty great that we will trade Stuckey and or CV for a player or players who have contracts beyond this season and that we will only have the MLE to use next season... I'd be shocked if we waited it out and kept full flexibility for next summer's FA class.

This doesnt have an impact on the impending Monroe extension nor the Drummond extension down the road.

& as others have said the CV/Stuckey expirings are a huge asset, we could potentially land another big fish.

Joe has done a phenomenal job.

I think a deal where the Pistons send Singler for a younger back-up center might work for both side in my eyes.

Nice write up. From what I'm reading though, Billups may retire after this season and move into the front office. In that event, it frees up another 2.5 million for the team as well, while also giving more play time to the other PG's.

It's a little worse than this. We're likely to give Monroe an extension before the summer, and the extension should start around $12-14m. And Smith is set to make $13.5m in 2014-5, not $12m (unless I missed that the deal was front-loaded, apologies if so).

So with the cap set at $58.6m, we're looking at having as little as $3.1m to spend.

I believe Larry Coon has already gone on record and projected a $62 mil cap...

How likely are we? What have you heard, read or otherwise discovered? It might make sense from a "loyaty and team building" POV but from a salary cap perspective signing Monroe to an extension that begins above his cap hold isn't very smart!

PP said $12 mil for Smith... you say $13.5 mil... PP projected a cap of $60 mil... Larry Coon projects it at $62 mil

So I'll add the additional $1.5 mil to Smith's salary and the additional $2 mil to the projected cap... we still have approx $10 mil in cap space!

FWIW: No one will ever has as little as $3.1 mil to spend in an off-season. Because that amount is lower than the exceptions the team would be entitiled to (tax payer or not) the team would not get the $3.1 mil... they'd get to use whatever exceptions were available to them.

You might want to check your math again. It's a little off.

That makes me excited. Yes. We signed 2 players it seems like nobody else wanted, but we were able to add the talent that we desperately needed and we will still have some room to make trades if it doesn't work or add another nice piece to the puzzle if this team plays well. Seems like a Win/Win considering we were likely going to lose our pick no matter what.

Completely agree it makes no sense to extend Monroe now unless he's willing to give us a nice discount. Instead of flipping CV31-Stuckey for a starter on a bad deal I really think we should be looking at dumping Bynum & Jonas for an expiring and hitting the summer with ~$15 mil in cap.

Looking at next summer: Granger, Deng and (likely) Gay are available (leaving out the Lebron-Melo-Kobe tier).

Obviously unless they drastic improvements this season, its stuckey and CV left to go before we are at our ideal rotation.
I think that unless some cant miss deal comes across, they will be here until the offseason, when we then let them expire for 17mil, spend about 10mil (maybe a little less if we're not going max) of that on a monroe extension, and have about 7mil to sign another major bench piece - which with the new cba seems to be a fair bit now.

Our bench really is quite bad though.. billups might not be able to produce anymore.. after that its bynum/singler/datome/mitchell/jerebko/siva. dont think any of them are capable of being contributers on a champ team, but thats for another thread.

We will not have $7 mil to spend if Larry Coon is correct on his projected salary cap figure!

It will be approx $10 mil in cap space... and we'd spend the vast majority of that on bench players before re-signing or extending (depending on how you view RFA) Monroe.

This is why this thread needs a sticky!

Some of us can put up the numbers and make it clear as crystal that we will have big money to spend next off-season... but some people don't read it or don't know enough about how the salary cap works to understand the numbers.

IF we stand pat from now until next off-season and let all our expirings walk we'll have $10 mil or thereabouts in cap space!

Simple, easy to read, done and dusted!

Aint no way we should give up that flexibility unless some team wants to give us a great deal for our expirings!

It definitely is. That said, we still need to get a backup, defensive minded C. If we can do that, and hopefully add a better SG than Stuckey I think we'll be very competitive and dangerous. And considering our primary position of need next season will likely be SG I think acquiring Afflalo would be an amazing move. He can stretch the floor and we'd have great D at positions 2-5, while Jennings gets steals. Very excited for this season.

its definitely better than last year, but its still pretty bad..
