trade idea with Toronto

R.Stuckey
J.Jerebko
C.Villanueva
for
R.Gay
A.Johnson
same old expirings for Gay with Jerebko for Amir thrown in, which also will save them money.
Pistons would have to add value. How much?
It would be nice to lose Stuckey, who doesn't fit well with Jennings, and 2 mediocre guys who are at the end of our logjam.
Amir can play a little center in a small-ball lineup and pf next to Monroe. Amir is very good for a bench player, so our bench would basically be awesome and Jorts would never have to play unless we had 2 injured big men.
So how much do we have to add? And is it better for Gay to go to a third team and we try to get role players?
Anyways....flame on, but I wanna hear your ideas too so I can flame back.

And yea, I'm bored and concerned about the transactions of the summer. It's hard to even congratulate Dumars on KCP or Smoove since we sucked to get the 8th pick and the market basically pimped Smoove and Detroit together.
I even had ideas about trading Monroe, who I frickin love, but yea. Hopefully him and Drummond are a fixture.
Blah, blah, blah.
But for real, tell me what idea you would counter with if youre up for some idle conversation.
I'm thinking we add 2nd's or it isn't worth it to us. Or throw in Mitchell or Siva or Bynum and 2nd's. But there is no way we should go too high.

oh yea, guess I gotta give Dumars credit for getting Billups and Datome. Billups might be broken and Datome might not reach that level, but those were great signings that could pay off huge. Im just disappointed that he didn't do some awesome cap management and that he got B.Jennings and no extra shot-blocking center. Oh well...

For real though,
Why would Toronto want to give away their golden boy in Gay?
THe dude hasnt even played a half a season for them and you are already throwing him out of their plans. For some reason they are in love with that dude.
The guy is way over paid as is. Hes Torontos problem now at almost 40 million over 2 seasons!!!!!!!!
They can keep him bro.

If we get Gay, our flexibility to give Monroe his extension will pretty much be gone, wouldn't it? I'm not okay with that.

If you want to get anyone on the Raptors try and pry Lowry away. That dude is a stud. The little man can do everything, and is probably the best rebounding PG in basketball.
I would give my left nut if we could somehow trade our future chucker in Jennings for him during midseason.

Seems a little unfair for the Raptors. Their fans would go nuts over this proposal. We take their best SF and best defensive big for Stuckey (what mood is he in today?) and two bench players, one who is a tweener and the other, well he's CV! I'm surprised there aren't any who have come on here and mocked this yet.
Coolness, don't you think adding Josh improves the Pistons shot blocking? There are a lot of pundits saying they expect Mitchell to spend his time in the Dleague and on the bench. It wouldn't surprise me to see him get floor time before the season is out. The guy is too good an athlete and he seems to like to defend. He could also assist with rim defense and shot blocking.

This is unfair for us, not the Raps. Rudy Gay's contract is pure toxic. People are debating whether or not to give Moose the max...guess what, Rudy makes more than the maximum amount that Moose can get from ANYONE in RFA, including us. Not to mention his awful awful awful midrange shooting percentage. He was nearly as bad as JSmoove.
Meanwhile, the Raps get 2 expirings and another contract that will expire the year after. In this ESPN article all 5 guys choose Rudy Gay as their "most overrated small forward":
http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/5-o ... l-forwardsNo thanks...if we are going after an SF, I'd rather go after someone like Leonard, Barnes, Harris, or even Hayward.

& on topic, this trade was already offered & turned down allegedly by Toronto & now w/ Josh at the 3 for the next 4 years we dont have any place for Rudy Gay.
Love Rudy Gay though

The only time it made sense trading for Gay was before we signed Smith. Now that he's on board we don't need to spend the ridiculous amount of money that is owed to gay. Also with Gay on the roster which one of Gay, Smith, monroe and drummond are coming off the bench?? it just doesn't make sense anymore. he's contract is ridiculous anyway.
I don't see the raptors dumping Gay for just expirings anyway and Amir is actually an important cog for that team.
doesn't make sense for either team.

The trade doesn't make sense. Rudy Gay would only exacerbate the front court issues. Additionally, Toronto only does this is they REALLY want to get rid of Gay's contract.
From a Toronto perspective, its pretty bad. From a Detroit perspective, it doesn't solve any issues, only creates more.

We would officially be the hands-down worst shooting team in the NBA, by a wide margin. Incredibly athletic, but couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

I don't think we need Gay with Jennings on board, since we should be able to create consistently at middling efficiency with BJ and Monroe as our first two options. But some of these reasons for not trading for him seem misguided.
DBC10 wrote:If we get Gay, our flexibility to give Monroe his extension will pretty much be gone, wouldn't it? I'm not okay with that.
First, we don't need any 'flexibility' to offer Monroe an extension--he's our RFA so the salary cap doesn't apply at all. The problem is that re-signing Monroe and having Gay is that we'd be near the $72m luxury tax--which our ownership probably won't pay. That's a concern, bu there would be options to get under that if we really wanted to keep Gay and the rest of our key pieces.
MrBigShot wrote: No thanks...if we are going after an SF, I'd rather go after someone like Leonard, Barnes, Harris, or even Hayward.
None of those guys are available for our cast-offs. We don't have some special leverage that makes other teams trade great assets for CV-Stuckey. Expirings are only valuable if another team needs to get rid of someone, and you don't get rid of young, cheap, productive guys. If you do, you get back good solid assets for them--picks, other young players, etc. I can't think of a single trade in which a proven, young, cheap player was traded just for cap space. And remember that the Raptors had to give up their starting PG (Calderon) and their second-best young talent (Ed Davis) just to pay Gay for the next two years.
ImHeisenberg wrote:We would officially be the hands-down worst shooting team in the NBA, by a wide margin. Incredibly athletic, but couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.
After a quick look at the shooting numbers, Gay isn't a bad midrange shooter. Smith is truly terrible outside of the lane, Jennings shoots too much from there, but Gay is fine from there. Seems like he's around 40%, which is above league average I believe. I think your implied point was that we need a GOOD shooter next to all those other poor-shooting guys--this is a really good point that I agree with. I just wanted to make sure people didn't have the distorted impression that Gay was a guy like Smith who's abysmal from midrange but still chucks away.
Again, I'm not saying we should make this trade or that I covet Rudy Gay (though I hope everyone realizes he's a really good player, just one that's hugely overpaid). I'm just trying to correct some of the reasons given here.

Thank you! Had you read the thread you'd have found that I said early on that Rap fans would go nuts over this proposal. Can't say as I blame you though!

Haaaaahhhhh! Raps fans overrating another player. I love Amir but, bitch please. The package is absolutely garbage but moving Amir wouldn't bother me nearly as much as Gay. We're far deeper at PF than at SF, and with Gay we finally have a top 10 SF again. His contract either comes off the books next summer or becomes an expiring so I don't give a flying fadoo about that.
