How good do you think this years team could be if instead of Jennings and Smith we had Chauncey(in his prime) and Rodman? Now imagine Jennings changing his game, just as Chauncey did. Then imagine Smith bringing a Rodman like game to the table. Looks like a pretty good team to me.

Yeah and if Dre can develop into a similar player to Shaq and Monroe can live up to his potential as the next Duncan we could be pretty decent. Heck, those guys are already similar to Shaq/Duncan in play style. Plus we have the second coming of prime Ginobili off the bench in Datome and we already know this is the year Stuckey finally becomes the next Wade. That looks like a pretty good team!

This seems like asking what would happen if Jennings became Magic. The answer is simple--we'd be really good--but the players aren't similar or comparable so the question seems pointless.

Smith for instance would have to more than double his rebound percentage to be at Rodman's level as a rebounder. Smith is a decent rebounding PF while Rodman led the league for like 8 seasons in rebound rate and had seasons in which he averaged 19 rebounds per game. Smith would also need to trade in his mediocre high-volume offense for Rodman-style cherry-picking; might not be a bad thing, but it would require Smith to cut his usage more than half (from about 26% to 10%, which was Rodman's peak-era average).

And Chauncey didn't 'change his game,' he just got more efficient at what he already did. Made more shots and decreased his mistakes, and the rest was probably just being around a bunch of reasonably efficient offensive options. BJ should improve, but his toolbox is much different than Chauncey's was--Chauncey was big and smart and needed to learn how to impose his skills on a game, BJ is little and quick and seems like he needs to learn how to take good shots, make good decisions, and know his limitations.

What if only the Pistons were allowed to ride on centaurs that could stab and maim other athletes without picking up fouls because they weren't the actual players? We would totally dominate the league.

Its not complicated. A Rodman like player, say Kawhi Leonard and Chauncey like player, Rondo.. Both Smith and Jennings can bring similar skills to the table and this would have the makings of a powerhouse team.

Jennings is just a completely different player from Chauncey. No use comparing them...their similiarites lie in their ability to shoot the ball from deep and pass. Chauncey is the better floor general, has a far higher bball IQ and relies on his size and strength to bully other PGs, sometimes in the post(well, not so much these days). Jennings is a smaller guy who relies on speed/quickness and takes quite a few ill-advised shots.

As for Smith/Rodman... JSmoove isn't going to be guarding all five positions, nor will he dominant the game on the boards. Josh is a good rebounder, but not a dominant one like Ben Wallace/Rodman were.

It's a stretch, man. I don't want Jennings to become Chauncey, or Rondo, or Steph Curry. And I don't want Josh Smith to become Dennis Rodman or LeBron. I want them to be the best versions of themselves...from arguable all stars who never got the nod, to changing their play styles and go on to make multiple all star teams.

DavidVolumes: The point everyone is trying to convey is that the original post and even this subsequent post don't contain enough factual information / reasonable analysis to be considered anything more than a daydream.

Josh Smith's game and Rodman's are drastically different. Both are good defenders and tall. That's where the similarities end.

Likewise, Brandon Jennings and Chauncy are very different. Brandon is much more athletic but so far has also been much more selfish of a player. Remember that Chauncy was already playing solidly for Minnesota before he even came here. He obviously got even better under Larry Brown but he was already on his way.

Now I'm not saying that Smith and Jennings can't adjust the way they play. But you're suggesting they become Chauncy and Rodman. That's a big leap that's frankly unrealistic (and may not even be wanted/needed in the case of Smith).

It's about as realistic as saying: Remember Michael Jordan in his Prime? Now look at Brandon Jennings. You know, if he morphed into MJ I think we'd be a contender this year?

I don't want to be wielding a big censorship stick but if you are going to post a forum topic that frankly is a waste to read then you should expect the negative feedback you're getting.
