Pistons Unlikely To Sign Greg Monroe To Extension

Greg Monroe is unlikely to agree to a contract extension with the Detroit Pistons this month, setting up restricted free agency in the summer.
NBA teams can only have one five-year designated player, which the Pistons will likely keep for Andre Drummond before the 15-16 season.
The Pistons will have the ability to match any offer Monroe receives in free agency.

Makes sense as he's a RFA, and any max offer from outside the org can only be four years so that works for us. Also we get the year to see how he plays as a PF.

Yeah, there's absolutely no rush to sign him up right now.

So which is it? They're unlikely to sign him to an extension or he's unlikely to agree to a contract? Wiretap gets to have it both ways because...?

Both.
Monroe wants to test RFA and the Pistons want him at the RFA price.

Kilo pretty much summed up my feelings. Not extending him isn't a sign that Detroit isn't interested in retaining him. This was the plan all along. Monroe's agent said he was never going to pursue an extension until next summer.

He's not built to be a stretch 4 at all. Doesn't have the range with his shot or very good quickness. Get rid of him in offseason and get someone better

Monroe's agent made it very clear about a year ago that his agent would test the market. It would make very little sense for the Pistons to waste time pushing for an extension when Camp Moose wants the market to set his value (in order to leverage the most money).
I think the media wants to fear monger this Moose contract thing (as they are known to do). It's whatever. If we can afford him and it makes sense to hold on to him, we will make a play for his services. If not, then we'll do the best we can with what we have.
I think Moose is worth keeping for the right price.

He may well get a max offer in free agency from a team hoping to scare us off, and he may well go the way of Nikola Pekovic where nobody wants to touch him because it just clogs up their cap space in the days before we match it.
Tough to tell at this stage, but I don't see anything in between those 2 options happening since teams will most likely be aware that we'll match any reasonable offer. Either way it will be up to us whether we keep him.

I'd be more surprised with we signed him now anyways. It's a good move and not saying I want it to happen but it gives the option to a trade. I'd honestly trade Monroe only if it would clearly upgrade us and fill a need(move Smith to PF and trade for a good young SF.)

I think it makes sense to wait. There is no need on Detroit's end to rush a deal. If Monroe doesn't have a good season, they might be able to get him for 60 mill for 5 seasons. I think he'd get more then Smith right now if signed which would not be good for Detroit.

Knicks get - Charlie Villanueva, Jason Smith, B. Roberts, D. Miller & Greg Monroe
Pelicans get - Tyson Chandler, Rodney Stuckey & JR Smith
Pistons get - Eric Gordon, Ryan Anderson & future 1sts from NYK & NO.
(courtesy of DowNY)
I would do this because we get to keep Shump.
Pistons become a perrenial playoff team with Drummond and a healthy Eric Gordon.
Pelicans become more balanced and since this trade won't happen before Dec. or Jan, Tyson is practically an expiring. -
by the way, this trade works, if NY sends Shump to the Pistons too. I would do this for Monroe.
You guys get Gordon and Shump for Monroe, but no picks from NY.
Any takers on this board?

^im all set with Gordon and id prefer to keep Moose at this point, but if the FO decided they are going to let him walk or Moose tries forcing something, Shump/Anderson/draft picks wouldn't be a horrible return.
Anderson gives us the spacer we desperately need between Smith/Drummond, Shump upgrades our presently pretty weak overall perimeter D and draft picks are always useful.

I would do the deal even if we had to take Gordon back, hell, I would do Monroe and Villanueva for Anderson and Jason Smith in a second.

You would do Monroe for a bag of chips so that's not saying much.

With that thought process you would never have the capacity to do so in the first.

I actually really, really like Anderson as a fit for this team, but Eric Gordon is a guy I'd never touch in a deal like this.
I'm not saying I'd NEVER do a deal in which we lose Monroe but get Anderson. My decision there would have to depend on what the rest of the trade looks like. I just don't like this variation in which we lose an expiring and take a massive risk on a guy who hasn't had a remotely healthy season for the past 2 year and is making massive bank.

There's no scenario where I would endorse Detroit undertaking Eric Gordon's contract. He hasn't even remotely lived up to his pay level. I understand it's mostly due to health, not personal desire. But, the facts are facts, the kid can't stay on the court.
Anderson is a great fit. He's also a guy who's a great fit on pretty much every team in the league, as he's a textbook stretch 4, that hits at a great rate.

^Agreed.
I think people are being a little closed minded if they're unequivocally bashing a deal in which Anderson is the key piece of a Monroe deal, but Gordon's an albatross.
