Should Detroit go after Lance Stephenson this summer?

The 23 year old 6'5 shooting guard will be an unrestricted free agent this year. Averaging 13.4 PPG, 5.1 assists, 6.7 rebounds, and tenacious defense on a loaded Pacers team. 48% shooting, 37.5% from 3. And had a couple of triple doubles this season already.
If Detroit wanted to go after him, Monroe is likely out of the picture. So, there's the major trade-off. KCP is a good defender, but his jumper is shaky. But, KCP isn't likely your starting SG for a great team yet.
So, prickly Detroit forum community, would you forego Moose's perennial 15 & 9 for Lance's all-around game? Considering they're likely to demand a price in the same ball park.

This is what kcp will be, just be patient. He and drummond will develop at the same time, there's no need to bring in the older version now just coz he's available.

There's zero guarantee that KCP will become as good as Stephenson is now. Also, there's only a 3 year difference between them. It's not as if Lance is 28.

There is absolutely no chance Stephenson leaves Indiana for any team regardless of the money involved.
Bird gave him a second chance when he was on his way out of the league so he will return the favor by taking a little less money.

How much do you think Lance Stephenson is worth?

I don't know, Hes becoming one of those could give you a triple double any night type players. He seems to be able to do a little bit of everything.

Lance is a very talented headcase... sort of a SG version of Ron Artest. Young Metta was a very good player, but you really need to be careful spending big coin on someone that's volatile. Personally, I'd avoid him, but I can understand the interest.

Unless the Pistons upset the Heat and/or the Pacers in the Playoffs and win multiple rounds, what is Stephenson's motivation to come to Detroit? Can we really offer him that much more than Indy that would deter him from signing with one of the strongest contenders and one of the only teams that gives Miami problems winning 4 games.
We will not have a damn clue who will be in the realm of possibility till the playoff picture shakes out a bit more. Because at this point I don't know if we are going to finish with 45 wins or 35.
At the beginning of the season we all thought Bledsoe would be available because we thought the Suns would suck and apply for a loan at the tank bank. Now some people consider him untouchable. One example, and maybe not a good one but hopefully understandable.
Time will develop our plans as well as the development of our players.

Indy isn't a major market, and will likely ask Stephenson to accept significantly less to stay there. But, if Indy is offering 7-8 million over 4, and Detroit comes in with 10-12 million over 4, how does he pass that up?

Don't you think title contention makes any city an attractive market, even if for just that relevant period of time?

No you definitely make a good point. Maybe I'm overvaluing a winning environment. Meant to quote on the first one.

No. Stephenson is merely an average player and he is a bad character guy, wouldn't want him in the lockeroom with our young guys

Its something i would entertain but it probably wont happen and he still wouldn't help our floor spacing even if we unload smoove/moose seeing as hes not a knockdown shooter.

Average my ass, he's a very good player and still only 23 I believe. As for "bad character", the bad boys back in the day were a bunch of **** and dirty players so whatever.

Where are people getting this idea that in order to sign another free agent we have to get rid of Monroe?
We have his bird rights. That means we can spend our capspace first on other free agents and then go over to resign Monroe as well.
A guy like Stephenson at most will probably only command 8-10 million/yr. Which is exactly what we have without any cap manuevering needed. So yes we could probably sign him and then resign Monroe too, if we wanted.
I like Stephenson's defense and he would actually be a good fit here, but I feel like we have the same player already in KCP and the only difference is a few years of experience. So unless its just a signing to accelerate our winning curve and not have to wait 3 years for KCP to get to that level, then I don't see the point of signing him for that much money. I would rather clear more space by dumping Jerebko and Bynum and go after a better player than him. I just think you can only add so many of these just " good" players, until you eventually have to sign a star. Otherwise you spend all your cap on a roster full of just good players, and a roster full of just good players isn't ever winning any championships.
I just don't want to end being the Pacers 2.0. A team that is good enough to give Miami a run for their money, but always lack that starpower to actually defeat them.

People should not be comparing KCP to Stephenson seeing as how 1) Stephenson is a much more proven commodity than KCP, who as of right now, can't put a ball into the bucket to save his life and 2) Stephenson is a much more polished passer than KCP will ever be. It's lazy to say that KCP will become Stephenson in a few years because he simply won't. They are only alike in the fact that they are both athletic and both SGs.
I personally would not mind getting Stephenson because he's an upgrade at the SG position for us and he is still improving and adding different facets to his game. Before this season he didn't handle the ball nearly as much as he does now and he is doing a pretty good job at it. He has also added a 3 point shot to his game which shows overall improvement. If nothing else, we're getting better by taking a key cog away from a division rival.
