I'm hoping that missing the playoffs would be enough to vacate the GM chair alone. I really don't want to lose a pick in the 2014 draft. Even if we just get in at #8, there will be high quality prospects to chose from.

I figure Cleveland has the talent to overtake us. The Nets are on an upswing now that AK47 is back, and Williams looks healthier, NY will likely pass Detroit as well now that Chandler is back (mostly, I think he's missed some games with an infection).

I one hundred percent agree. This season will be remembered for that mistake. Joe d will get fired as this team is just too bad to make the playoffs.

I've mentioned this before but:

You cant blame losing the pick on ownership.

People that do are assuming we were planning to use the amnesty on BG or CV and just keep on trucking.

I'm of the opinion (maybe I give the organisation too much credit) that the original idea was to trade BG and the pick for Maggette to clear salary then amnesty CV... thus giving us a huge chunk of cap space to use last off-season.

So we do the BG/pick for Maggette trade... and then things changed. Toronto and Memphis came along and wanted to give us Calderon for Prince. That's a great deal for us because we get a "mentor" PG type for Knight and lose a long term contract... so we take that deal.

Now there is no real reason to amnesty CV, especially when you have to hit a minimum salary level...

You can't look at every single trade in isolation and determine if it was good or bad. Every GM, no matter how stupid has some kind of plan. But things change all the time and you have to adjust on the fly.

People rag on Gores for not using the amnesty on CV... some people say Gores is cheap! Yet this is the same guy who brought in Smith, Jennings, Datome, Chauncey, retained Bynum... hardly the work of a cheap owner.

Gores easily could have not signed anyone, used the amnesty on CV and fell well below the minimum salary level. All that happens then is that the players on our roster get an even share of the difference. Example: If the minimum level was $42 mil and we only paid 12 guys $25 mil then all our guys would receive $1,416,666.66 after the season!

If Gores was cheap THAT would have been the better option.

Very true. Everyone here agrees that Dumars has been terrible the last half decade (except for drafting Moose and Drummond), but really...who do you replace him with? I think it's even more of a crapshoot when hiring a first time GM than hiring new coaches, the chances of us getting a David Kahn or Isiah Thomas are higher than a Sam Presti or Masai Uriji.

I know it was forever ago, but there's only like five active championship winning GMs...and Joe is one of them.

Joe Dumars entire approach is wrong which is why I want him gone. He doesn't believe in positions and a balanced roster. His philosophy is try to stack talent together regardless of position, that all he needs to do is find versatile players and have them all be interchangeable. This mentality gave us the Gordon/Rip/Stuckey debacle, the Smith/Monroe/Dre idiocy, an endless obsession with combo guards, everybody from Knight, to Stuckey, Monroe, Smith all playing out of position. It's like he saw Lebron James and decided that all of basketball had to be like Lebron. News flash Joe, Lebron is a once in a generation talent. He highlights how out of the ordinary it is to have players who can shift to almost all positions.

I don't think anyone here has said getting a new GM would automatically mean the Pistons start winning. The problem is the culture is broken. You might be afraid who might replace Dumars, but that's no good reason to keep on truckin' with him. There may only be 5 active championship GMs, but Dumars is the GM of 1 of the 5 teams that haven't had a playoff appearance since the 09-10 season.

I agreed with Kilo then and still do: McDonough was the guy. Gores missed a golden opportunity there.

Throw Hinkie in there and that's 2 very qualified people we could have looked at.
