I actually think 9th seed is a strong possibility

Post#1 » by The Moose » Sun Jan 12, 2014 12:24 pm

Looking at the playoff standings right now

1. Indiana
2. Miami
3. Atlanta
4. Toronto
5. Chicago
6. Washington
7. Detroit
8. Brooklyn

However, the Knicks are starting to come into form, and I can't see them not finishing in the playoffs. So that leaves an odd team out, and looking at that list right now, it's very scary...

I agree. I look at the other 7 teams currently in pole position, and NY, and wouldn't expect Detroit to be able to beat any of them.

Beating the hapless Philly isn't impressive to anybody. And, requiring a last second hero shot to beat the Bledsoe-less Suns isn't reassuring either.

What gives you people confidence in all the other bad teams and not your own? That's some amazing inferiority complex some of you have.

Yeah...pretty much everything has to go right for those below us and everything wrong for the Pistons for that to happen. Charlotte is already falling hard.

Considering they were 9th just yesterday, its obviously a possibility, but all those teams have their flaws just like the Pistons.

Atlanta and Chicago are likely to run out of steam eventually due to injuries/salary dumps. Both teams are bad on the road. That's not a sign of a good team and will catch up to them. Whereas you have to think the Pistons will eventually start winning more games at home, and are proving to be a good road team. When it gets toward the end of the season and these teams have to go on the road to win big games to stay in the race, that's going to play into the Pistons favor.

Toronto will probably get in by default being in a bad division, but Washington, Brooklyn, and New York, who knows. In my opinion Pistons have as much chance to finish 3rd as they do 9th. All 8 of these teams from 3-10 (incl Charlotte) are pretty much even. Way too early to be making predictions.

Washington has been more steady than Detroit this year. Brooklyn and NY are both on an upswing right now- both could easily push Detroit out of position by February.

Its an undeniable possibility, and it would suck. Badly.

A lot of season left though, a lot of things can change. I've participated in these discussions before, but the truth is its probably too early for them.

Yes it would but I think that chicago will miss the playoffs and if they dont stary losing games soon theyll get rid of gibson or dunleavy. Making the playoffs after the deng trade would be a total failure for bulls management.

Heres where I think the east falls

1. IND
2. MIA
3. TOR
4. BRK
5. NY
6. WAS
7. CLE
8. DET

9. ATL
10. CHA
11. ORL
12. CHI
13. BOS
14. PHI
15. MIL

6-10 seeds all decided in the last 4 weeks

Yeah that steady Washington team is 1 1/2 games in front of us. Where does one draw their confidence in them. Brooklyn and NY are on an upswing, Detroit is on a terrible downswing and yet are still ahead of them.

Washington is 1.5 games more steady and NY/Brooklyn are both below Detroit. I don't know how that means Detroit will be the odd man out in February. The Pistons could just as easily push all three out of position by then just the same.

Pistons have won 2 straight and Brooklyn is coming off a loss, and the Wizards have lost 2 straight. So which team is on the upswing?

Too many ebbs/flows of an NBA season to make proclamations based on one week in time. A few weeks ago the Pistons were playing great and all these teams were down. Then last week it flip-flopped and the Pistons were down. Now its trending back in the other direction again with the Pistons getting back on track and the others starting to take some losses.

Just let it play out. And did that Knicks team really put fear in you last week? The Pistons were playing the worst basketball in the league, and the Knicks could barely beat them at home. Again, looking at all these 8 teams, I'm just not seeing any real difference to predict any one of them will be better/worse by years end.

For what it's worth, Hollingers playoff odds has us finishing 9th as well, but I understand where you guys are coming from saying none of those teams are outright better than us. The problem is we have fallen quite a distance behind teams like Chicago and Atlanta making it very difficult to catch them

Worst nightmare - we miss the playoffs and we still give the pick to Charlotte. We really need one or the other.

We're 2.5 games behind Chicago and 4.5 behind Atlanta (could be 4 tonight if they lose to Memphis) and 45 games left.

Thats not quite a distance at all with that many games left. Its about the same distance its been all year. We've hovered around that 3-4 game mark from Atlanta most of the season, and they are now without Horford, so if anything our chances of catching them are even better today than before.

Doesn't Hollinger run the Grizzlies now? What's he doing making predictions for other teams stiil?

Holingers formula also has the raps with a better chance to win a ship than the heat so there's that.

They still kept his analytical formulas on espn. And while the playoff odds are fun to look at they flip flop all the time. It's more accurate in the home stretch of games. The pistons have just as much chance to make the playoffs as anyone besides Miami and Indiana being a lock. We have a ton of trade options to throw us in a better or worse direction too. To early to tell

Top 6 in the East and a second round exit is a strong possibility too, it just depends on what you wanna focus on.

If the raps get #3 I think we beat them.
