ESPN Insider article on trading Smith

I just noticed this on the hoopshype rumor section. Does anyone have insider so we can read the whole thing?

The Josh Smith experiment in Detroit is not going well, and there's strong opinion around the league that the Pistons would trade him if they could -- and "could'' is the key word. Since Smith is in the first year of a four-year, $56 million deal, he is one of the most untradable players in the league. ESPN.com -

If true, this could mean they are looking to keep Monroe and trade Smith instead. Or it could mean they are looking to clean house, get rid of both and start over rebuilding around Drummond with a different approach. ie maybe just going the cheap stretch 4 route. Seeing as how Dre can man the paint by himself, do they really need to invest big money in a PF at all?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out, as maybe the Pistons are going to use all of their chips to try and overhaul the whole roster.

At this point I think we definitely need to look to trade Smith if possible. Monroe has his flaws(many of them) but Josh Smith is not a guy you can rely on as apart of a championship core. He still doesn't understand the fact that he can't shoot, but continues to do so anyway. Cheeks is partially to blame, but I'm not giving Smith a pass. He had his very good seasons when he barely shot any threes.

And we need to commit to either making the playoffs or developing the young guys and retaining our pick. Say whatever about the ethics of "tanking" or the importance of playoff experience and having a winning culture, but I know this: Being caught in the middle of not making the playoffs and still being good enough to give our pick to Charlotte will not be a good thing for the Pistons.

Maybe i'm being naive, but i believe Dumars will hang onto Monroe.
I know he would hate to trade smith, but he's between a rock and a hard place now.
Drummond and Monroe are the future of the team. I think he sees that.

The sky is blue, hes a disaster but virtually untradeable.

Joe was the only one who wanted him last Summer & that was before this years mess.

Based on the past few years & last Summer I have legit doubts that he understands this.

This is actually a non-no, but not on HoopsHype :-) They actually pulled the full blurb from Insider and posted it. So you didn't miss anything.

Aside from Drummond, he shouldn't marry himself to anyone on this team.

There's talk that Bosh could be opting out this summer. If you could have Monroe or Bosh on a max deal, you take Bosh every time. He would be the PERFECT fit next to Drummond. Excellent shooter, excellent P&R and team defender, and championship experience. If he's available, I'm giving that money to him over Monroe no question.

Of course having Smith still on the roster could complicate that, but they could always bring him off the bench starting next year if necessary. Or its possible with Bosh's shooting and defense that the big lineup with Smith at SF could even work still, with Bosh instead of Monroe at PF.

If you think about it, most of the issues that Monroe causes at PF in the big lineup wouldn't exist with Bosh.

Honestly i take this with a grain of salt. Smith's contract is for 3 more seasons , he's in his prime and athletic as a mofo. He's most definitely tradable, its a matter of what we can get in return.

As if the max for Bosh and Monroe is the same.

I've thought of this before and can see a bosh / Monroe swipe happen.

This is spot on. Any contract is trade-able in the NBA, any.

Agree that anyone is tradeable - it all depends on what you're willing to take for him. If we're expecting an All Star SF in return. that isn't happening. Some expiring or lessor contracts of lessor players? Sure, that could happen.

I definitely could see that, as I'm sure Miami would love a consolation prize of Monroe, should Bosh decide to leave.

Though if we can trade Monroe now for someone else and include some of our other contracts in the deal, we could have enough capspace to just sign Bosh outright in FA, and pickup an additional starter in the separate Monroe deal.

For instance, what if we sent Monroe, Jerebko, and Bynum to Orlando for Afflalo. Then we could potentially have enough capspace to sign Bosh to a near max deal AND some leftover to pickup someone like Ariza on an MLE type deal to play SF.

Jennings/Siva
Afflalo/KCP
Ariza/Singler
Bosh/Smith
Drummond/Harrellson

That could be a contender in the East next year if Joe could make it happen.

Smith is most definitely trade-able but its gotta be the right package at the right time.. I cant see us getting a good deal for Smith until the offseason. I think the #1 thing to do right now is fire Cheeks

I'm not saying Monroe is untouchable. I'm just saying he is a building block guy. He's a young big with talent and potential to grow. You don't just get rid of that because one season has gone to ****

I could see Detroit/Houston doing the Asik deal if the Pistons really just wanted to get out of the Smith contract. Even though Asik wouldn't solve any issues, instead of 3 years of Smith at 14 mil/yr, it would only be 1 year of Asik at 15 mil.

Because their salaries are the same next year, and it would save the Pistons money in the longterm, Detroit might be the one and only team that might have interest in taking Asik's contract. Likewise, Houston having Dwight and needing a PF (and expressing interest in Smith this summer) might be the only team that would have interest in him too.

So I think that could be an option for the Pistons if they chose to explore trading him for longterm cap relief.

It would certainly make going after Bosh in the summer more plausible, if they chose to pursue him this summer.

To be honest though, the last 4 seasons with Monroe have gone to **** so I just think the Pistons should be exploring all of their options
