Cavs fire GM, will Pistons follow the trend?

News just breaking that Cavs GM Chris Grant has been told his services are no longer required.

That heavy breathing you hear (probably accompanied with increased sweat) is coming from Joe Dumars.

Is he next? :-?

I pray that it is. We keep losing to a lot of tanking teams and continue to have a roller coaster of a season with no end in sight.

Pretty obvious something big has to happen and it should happen first at the top before any knee jerk trades happen god forbid.

The east is terrible this year the worst I've ever seen it .Cleveland is the first dominoes in a long string of GM's and coaches to go , hopefully Joe's next.

I swear if a panic trade is allowed to happen... It might actually be hopeless for the long haul.

As a patient fan and supporter of Dumars, I think this year has sunk him, it is time for him to go, Smith/Jennings/Cheeks have not worked out. The swing for the fences this year to make the playoffs has backfired and will set the franchise back.

I think Ben Gordon and a 1st rounder for Maggette's carcass was a panic trade, we just didn't realize it at the time. Dumars was panicked for his employment.

We gave up a 1st to sign Smith...Let that sink in. That's basically what happened. Dumars liked Smith for a while I think.

IMHO I don't consider it a panic trade. Similar to the Billups-AI trade, it makes sense when you look at what they did for our cap space. Unfortunately, again very similar to the Billups-AI trade, the problem wasn't getting the cap space, but what came after. After the Billups trade, we had $40M in expiring deals (Sheed and AI) and the best we could do is get CV and BG. We probably should have kept the cap space and used in the following year when all the big free agents came out. So fast forward to the Maggette trade - we got cap space out of the deal, which gave us the flexibility to build around Monroe and Drummond. That's a good position to be in. But again, Dumars blew it by using it on Jennings and Smith. What if we had Iggy and Lowery instead? Then the pick we gave up would be around #20, and we'd be in the playoffs, and the trade wouldn't look so bad.

It's rare enough for a coach to get fired mid-season; I've never heard of a GM getting his walking papers like this before. I think it speaks of the top-to-bottom dysfunction in the Cavs' organization, and as such I don't really wanna see Gores follow suit.

This doesn't exactly paint a happy picture for the rest of this season, but I think Gores will allow Dumars and Cheeks to play out the string and then fire them as soon as the season's over. I also wouldn't be surprised he's handcuffed Joe in a roundabout, professional way. Something like he's told Joe, "No, don't make any trades, I still believe in this team and think it could come together for a playoff run down the stretch," when what he REALLY means is, "I want your replacement to decide on Monroe's future and what to do with the cap space from our expiring deals." In other words, Joe and Mo may now officially be lame ducks.

Answer: Probably never.

If anything, I bet Gores allows Dumars to finish out his contract and lets him walk after the season.....or keeps him on in some "advisory" role.

I'd be surprised if Joe is completely gone. He's a legend in Detroit despite his recent failings.

Also the worrying thing is who will replace Joe?? Gores was the guy that wanted frank and we all saw how that ended.
Maybe he could get Phil Jackson in??? And would it be a good thing??

This move is interesting because it could be a precursor to Gilbert hiring Dumars. With Gores/Gilbert being close, the Cavs may already know that Joe is on his way out, and this is just prepping for when that time comes. I woudn't be surprised at all to see Gilbert offer up a ton of money to Dumars to take over the Cavs, if/when he gets relieved of his duties here.

We can do nothing but speculate. I believe he won't be fired. Gores can just let him walk once the season ends for the Pistons, and not re-sign him. I'm guessing that is the route he's heading.

Who will be in charge? I have no clue. Gores doesn't adhere to conventional wisdom in the two staffing positions we know he had a hand in- the last two head coaches. It could be somebody from Platinum Equity for all we know.

He could try and pry Kevin Pritchard away from the Pacers, especially now that Bird is back and essentially calling the shots again anyways. That would be my personal pick.

I hope i'm wrong too, if it leads to a Smith trade. If it leads to dealing Monroe for lesser parts, doubling-down on Smith as a building block next to Drummond and locks us on this path for the foreseeable future, I hope I'm right! Two weeks away, all we can do is wait and see for now.
