Cheeks is gone.

Candidates revealed so far.

Interim:
Image
John Loyer - I'm pretty sure the only holdover from the Frank Regime. Never been a head coach at any level. Not sure if he's long term

Candidates:
Sam Amick, Marc Spears both say Hollins is interested. Nobody else speculated.

If this team really wanted to tank, promote Sheed to HC. It would be awesome, and he would probably get more highlights on ESPN for violent outbursts than any of our players get for highlight reel plays.

My gut says they'll do the tried and true approach of just promoting one of the assistants, whether it's Maz or Loyer.

Even if they did hire Hollins, it would be very difficult for him to come in mid-season and try and implement a defensive system, especially on a team that was seemingly lack any system at all.

Right now, I'm just glad Cheeks is long gone. That alone is a win in my book. Additionally, Joe's seat has to be frying his ass right now it's so hot. I don't even know if Gores would allow him to go through a hiring process.

You probably saw Hollins more than anybody on the board. What are his negatives? I know he didn't play Quincy over Tayshaun in the beginning.

He's an old school coach. He isn't a big believer in statistical analysis. But, his attitude could rub somebody like Smith the wrong way, as he won't let the players run the locker room. Jennings could be an issue as well if he's not willing to truly commit to defense.

Hollins did a fantastic job of bringing Conley along as a PG, Conley's game made the leap after Hollins started coaching him up.

He seemed to do a fantastic job of getting everyone to buy into the defense first system- even a career knuckle head like Randolph fell into the fold in Memphis and became an all-star.

His primary negative would be the fact that he generally will prefer veterans over younger players. The Prince over Pondexter last season was a good example. He preferred Prince's high IQ and experience over Q's 3-point shooting. But, in the case of Detroit, I could see him using KCP more often due to the lack of perimeter defense from anyone else.

Overall, I found Hollins to be a charismatic leader for those Grizzlies teams that generally over-achieved despite not having any superstar players or a lot of depth on their bench.

Thanks. Sounds like the perfect fit with this roster.

Great. Get ready for some serious street ball. Our defense may even get worst if that's possible.

Loyer may very well be a good coach, but he's in over his head in this situation.

If we want Hollins, why waste time? Who else could possibly be available?

Nobody openly states they're conducting interviews mid-season. I definitely see a coach getting hired during the all star break.

It'd be great if we could get him, but if we're pursuing Hollins now, why didn't we go for him in the first place?

I agree this locker room is dysfunctional. Stuckey and CV need to go and Smith too.

I don't have enough information to explain our FO's thought process. All I know is that Hollins is a terrific coach who was pivotal in turning Conley into a very good 2nd tier PG, and getting ZBo under control. Monroe is very similar to Zbo. I bet Hollins would help him out quite a bit. Same for Jennings.

By "we" you mean the forum boards? Pistons ownership or management haven't stated anything of that nature.

Also, it's relatively rare to see a long term HC hired mid-season. Hollins would be jumping into a sinking ship, opposed to having a fresh start in the off-season. They can still make a run for Hollins this summer.

I really don't see why there is such hysterics over not hiring a coach now.

Given the job Dumars has done its perfectly understandable to want someone else to manage the coaching search in the offseason.

Probably because Hollins apparently interested in the job.

Yeah the odds of getting Hollins in the offseason are slim. Were going to be competing with multiple teams to get him. Lock him up now if he's interested otherwise were going to get another under achieving coach.

Hollins looks pretty good for 60.

If that really were true wouldn't Hollins' best play also be to wait till the offseason?
