seein reports about Lionel wanting Pistons job- when I asked @stephenasmith about- he said owner will go hard after Izzo after season

This guy is an ESPN radio host in Memphis. I also heard SAS say this himself on first take the other day. This would explain why we aren't pursuring Hollins, if true.

What do you think, could Gores get Izzo here, and could he succeed?

Hollins seems liek a safer bet IMO, but i don't follow college ball, so i don't know enough to judge Izzo fairly.

No. I don't think he can get Izzo here. I think Izzo will stay at MSU. I also think by that time, Hollins will be hired by another team.

RIP Detroit Pistons

He's a great coach. He'll get bad talent and will still make them reach farther than they're supposed to. He knows how to make his players play hard for him. He's a really really good coach and I would hire him for sure. I just don't think he would leave MSU.

Izzo is awesome and I would take him over Hollins. But like you said Hes not leaving MSU.

This is my concern. It seems risky to put Hollins aside for a guy that has adamently turned down the NBA every summer for the last decade. If he doesn't get him, Hollins might be put off by us dissing him twice (offering him the assistant job), and just go to another team instead.

Also, even if he got him to come here, there's still a big risk of him being a college coach with no NBA experience. I have long felt that he's the one guy in college who could succeed in the NBA, because to me he's like a Larry Brown clone, who already coach's an NBA style system in college. So I think he could succeed, and us being a young team would benefit him, as opposed to taking over a bunch of old players who he's not used to coaching.

I don't know though. I think I'd take the sure thing in Hollins now if I were Gores, but I see the attraction to Izzo for him. He's probably looking at it like it would attract tons of fans to the games AND have big potential on the court, vs Hollins who isn't likely to fill seats on his own.

A good college coach doesn't make a good pro coach. Izzo is the man in East Lansing and in college ball and he has all the power over his players. In the pros he's dealing with multimillionaire spoiled athletes - it's a different beast.

Izzo would need a 10 year iron clad contract with strong player personel input to show the lockerroom who has all the power and if they don't like it it will be them who is leaving.

Might as well swing for the fences, go get Izzo if we can.

I like hearing they are going after Izzo, but this is disappoiting news because its confirms that we probably won't be hiring Hollins this season.

On the one hand, I'm nervous about hiring a college coach.

On the other hand, Izzo's a beast.

Really, I'd hate to see him leave. He's a big part of why the B1G is so good, and he actually does things the right way. Guys who don't keep there grades up do in fact get suspended. He doesn't deal with a prospect's "agent" or handler. He runs his team well, and college BBall would be much worse if he left. Besides, UM/MSU wouldn't be any fun if they became garbage.

Just take Hollins! The guy is a top 7 coach in my book (maybe higher) and he is available. Don't risk that for someone who a) You may not be able to lure away, and b)don't know if his success will translate to the NBA. Most of all, I think moving Izzo from the Spartans to the Pistons would be a net negative for (the State of) Michigan sports. Izzo belongs in East Lansing.

Izzo knows how to get college players to play great team basketball. It's another ball game in the NBA, where the players are paid multi-millionaires, and often times with egos (Smith, Jennings).

Izzo will never leave MSU. Why sacrifice his job security and legacy in East Lansing for what would likely amount to a two to three year stay in Auburn Hills at best?

Iam sure if Iizzo were to leave MSU,MSU would probably give their next coach some contract that leaves an open if Iizzo were to flame out in the NBA and want to go back,I also think Iizzo wants to at least give it a shot in the NBA.Iizzo is a beast but my only concern is if he flames out for whatever reason (alot already stated in this thread).

Honestly I would be happy with either, but hope they give an assistant job to lambier if something goes wrong with Iizzo, not to mention he has big bill backing him up.

Izzo would probably say no, citing that he already has better players than the pistons

Izzo is not leaving. As a graduate of MSU, I absolutely love Izzo but I don't think he is an NBA type coach.

Izzo won't leave MSU. He's a great college coach, but I wouldn't even want him to coach the Pistons.

Trust me, Izzo isn't leaving MSU. With the kind of accolades he has in college basketball, he would have to be stupid to go to the NBA. He loves it at MSU, and he is beloved here. Not a chance he leaves to go to the Pistons.
