Our 2015 and 2017 firsts unprotected for Rondo?

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Mon Feb 17, 2014 11:41 pm

Assuming Charlotte gets our pick this year, I believe we can trade our 2015 and 2017. There's a report this is the asking price. Any interest?
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I think we can only trade our 2016 and 2018 picks because if we traded our 2015 that would be 2 consecutive years.

Nope. Not giving up two picks for a guy who will probably leave in 15 months. I'm fine with Jennings right now and I believe he is getting better.

YES!

I'm not sure what their specifiications are though for the picks. Will they take any 2 picks or do they have to be picks in this years draft?

If they can be future picks, I'd definitely do that. We already have our young franchise player in Drummond. We don't need any more draft picks for the forseeable future.

I would assume they want a pick in this years draft but they certainly don't want to wait until 2016 to get the first of the 2 picks. This is also just their supposed asking price so they would probably settle for a lottery pick this year and a rotation player or something along those lines.

You can check me on this, but I think the rule applies to future drafts. If a team didn't have a pick in the draft just past, there is no "look back" to prevent them from trading next year's pick.

If he agrees to sign here long term and they have to take back Jennings.

That thought crossed my mind. But I'm pretty sure we're talking max, in the event he did agree.

What really #$%& me off is realizing how the Gordon trade is handcuffing us here.

We should try moving some of our assets for picks in this draft and try to get Rondo.

Knowing how much Joe wanted Rondo this summer, I'd be surprised if he wasn't all over this, but who knows how much power he even still has anymore. Maybe he's not allowed to make trades.

In my opinion though, if Gores was planning on changing GMs he would've have done it with the Cheeks move. The fact that he didn't tells me Joe is here to stay. I don't buy the theory that he's worried about public perception. He didn't build a billion dollar empire by placing public perception above business, and if waiting to change GMs prevents you from making trades, I just don't see Gores putting his whole company on hold to save Dumars some embaressment.

The thing is without that Gordon trade we don't have Smith, and without Smith, the odds of getting Rondo to resign go down significantly. So essentially the Gordon trade needed to happen for us to even be players in a deal for Rondo right now. In other words, Joe probably wouldn't be interested in him at all just for a one year rental, if he wasn't confident he could resign him. Having Smith here is probably what would give him that confidenco pursue him.

Or we could have simply amnestied Gordon and kept our pick.....

Well you can blame Gores for that though, not Dumars.

I still think Jennings is a good fit for us, I'll probably pass.

Jennings is terrible

Jennings may be suspect on the defensive end and take wild shoots from time-to-time, but he isn't terrible.

I think he's terrible. He kills you on offense unless you catch a night were he gets hot. On Defense Hes god awful and makes the whole team bad on defense because he constantly gives up guard penetration. He can pass the ball well but he still can't run a offense. Basically he puts up empty stats everywhere.
