A lot of us would like to see Chauncey take a coaching position here when he retires, but he keeps saying he prefers to be a GM. Based on some of these quotes from last week, I wonder if there's any chance he could already have a deal in place with Gores to take over for Dumars (or at least be considered as a candidate)

Pistons guard Chauncey Billups often hears he can become the next great NBA coach. He is flattered, but Billups said he has his eye on the front office after he retires from the league.

“Of course I have been thinking about my future the last five years,” Billups said. “I think a lot of people think that would be the natural progression because of what I do on the court. But if I had my desire I want to be in the front office and put the team together and be behind the scenes rather than being on the court every day.”

“I know the egos and how the personalities mix,” Billups said. “I know if somebody is in or just wants to be a star and get paid. I know a lot of these things. I just think I know what it takes to win.”

He sure sounds like he's lobbying for the position if he doesn't already have a deal in place, and its not like Gores really knows a ton of other candidates either.

I'd trust him with this team and I can't argue with anything he said. It sounds like he's been studying these players all season, almost as if he's been preparing himself for what moves to make this summer if/when he takes over lol.

It would be similar to how Joe went straight from playing into the front office, and I remember he said that really helped because he already knew the roster and could relate to the players. Chauncey would be about the same age that Joe was when he took over.

No. The game is different since when Dumars took over.(and even he took a year off i think to prepare for GM?)

Chauncey does know nothing about the CBA, negotiating contracts and analytics i presume. He should prove himself first as an assistant GM before becoming a GM in my opinion.

You can always put assistants in place who specialize in those things, like Joe had with Hammond and Tom Wilson. I don't think Joe knew everything when he took over and didn't prevent him from making a bunch of great moves right away.

Chauncey knows talent and knows the winning formula. He also knows a lot of the players today, not only from a talent evaluation standpoint, but in terms of recruiting guys as well. He's developed a lot of relationships with a lot of the young guys around the league who he's mentored, as well as the stars. He's got great respect from pretty much every executive/coach/player in the league, so making deals would be easy for him. It would definitely increase our chances of attracting Melo here in FA too.

I'm not saying he would be my #1 choice, but I can see a lot of positives to it.

It's funny to think that Hammond specialized in something other than driving small market teams into the ground, once upon a time.

I'm a huge fan of Chauncey and would love to see him either work as a coach of in the front office of the Pistons for years to come.

However, I wouldn't hire him to succeed Dumars as GM right away. He has no experience whatsoever, and I think he would be out of his depth. I'd like to remind you guys of Simmons' latest column on Grantland.com:

Many are ex-players getting routinely outwitted by shrewd negotiators with law degrees and MBAs, bulldogs who were basically created by God to take advantage of overmatched former athletes. If your life depended on ONE contract negotiation, would you rather have Dan Fegan (Yale Law School, two decades of experience as a sports agent) … or Ernie Grunfeld? Would you rather have Arn Tellem (Michigan Law, former partner in a law firm, 32 years of experience as a sports agent) … or Joe Dumars? Come on.

we need a guy who can work the cap and understands the "newer nba". im not one to try and hire players for the nostalgia factor. if he wants an office position then let him work his way up and earn it.

I voted "no" only because "Hell No!" wasn't an option. The guy isn't remotely qualified to be a GM right out of his playing career.

A lot of other good candidates before I even consider Billups. If anything, allow Billups to stay on as assistant GM or lead scout or something....

I know this wouldnt happen but its was funny hearing the guys on 97.1 take a poll if people/fans would/wouldnt like the lady who is the ceo (or something like that) of GM and another acolade,to become the general mannager of the pistons.Weird timing I guess.

Have you people learned anything from Dumars tenure? Former players negotiating contracts against Harvard and Yale lawyers is NOT a wise decision.

You can place Billups in some kind of front office role, but not being a decision maker.

Give me a law school candidate who has some background in sports anyday over a former player.

I'm tired of seeing former players going into these positions. I want someone who has some specialized background in doing similar actions as running a team.

The good ones tend to stay employed.

Kevin Pritchard could be a good candidate. He did well in Portland for the most part, and would have built a contender if Oden and Roy didn't fall apart. He's been working for the Pacers, but has become marginalized now that Larry Bird came back this year.

Unemployed GM's are usually unemployed because they failed. Imagine if Gores hired Colangelo.

If we fire Dumars(which no evidence has suggested we will), I would rather hire Billups instead of some nerd stat geek who never played a game of basketball in his life.

All the evidence suggest gores has fired Joe.

Chauncey right now would be a better GM than Joe but I would like to see a guy like Neil Olshey in the GM chair, we are so close to screwing up our gift wrapped front line/our future, we need someone to come in, get rid of the idiots & try to get this thing back on track.
