It seems best we not have our pick this draft

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Wed Feb 26, 2014 1:02 pm

We're all impatient for the team to get better, but I think keeping the pick this year isn't the best thing for at least a couple of reasons.

1) Our pick is much less protected in 2015 and forward. We stand to lose a far higher choice.

2) Charlotte possibly having our pick in 2015, 2016, or 2017 really handcuffs us in terms of being able to trade a one in the next few years, assuming I'm interpreting the rule about two consecutive years with no first correctly. Wouldn't that mean we couldn't trade a first until 2019 because any other year leaves us with the potential of two consecutive years without a first?
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

1) That's a stupid reason with logical fallacies amok.

2) I agree and thing that it might be better to give our new gm flexibility in coming years.

3) It means any pick we trade has many stipulations. For example if traded a pick this year with a player it would read something like "This pick will be paid two years after our Charlotte pick is traded, starting at the earliest in 2016, and at the latest 2019." Any protections thereafter would/could take us well into the 2020s if they even allow protections. I assume they do and simply never do because it would handicap a team even further.

"This pick will be protected in year one by the lottery, year two by the lottery, year three top 3, and year four unprotected, starting two years after the Bobcats pick is sent, which is as early as the year 2016 and no later than 2019, with this pick being delivered no later than 2023." Yikes.

I know pessimism tends to rule on these boards, but this takes gloom and doom to a whole new level. We keep our pick, which by definition means we add a top eight talent from a really good draft … and we get WORSE next year? Our best player still can't legally buy beer, so it stands to logic that he should keep improving … and we get WORSE next year? We have a new GM who hires a new coach to work with all this young talent … and we get WORSE next year?

Remember, Gores said, "Playoffs or bust!" this year; I can't imagine he'll hire a GM who plans to come in and tank. Whomever's at the helm after this season will be looking to both clean up the roster AND win now. And by "win now," I mean just improve to the point we're a first round playoff team (you know, what our realistic goal was for this past season).

Keep our pick, lose our pick. It really doesn't matter- it's delaying the inevitable at best.

If we keep the pick this year- people will complain about losing the pick next year; as the 2015 draft is already getting hyped to be deep as well, especially if the improbable happens and Embiid and Parker do indeed remain in school.

Our team most likely will be a 5-10 pick candidate next year

Id rather lose the 9-10th pick than the 6-7th pick

We arent getting the top 8 pick no way not with the way New York is playing and there are at least 6 teams locked ahead of us 1-6 in the draft leaving us fighting for the last 2 picks.

Id rather make the playoffs, give up the pick, and then if are bad next year not worry about the pick going to Bobcats and end up like the Darko pick we got (except this time we will be on the short end of the stick)

lol right? we're almost a playoff team as it is, and things virtually can't get worse.

You really need to explain why you think we'd be a worse team next year especially AFTER adding a top 8 pick.

If we don't all-out tank then Gores is an idiot. Drummond and Monroe should both pick up some nice "injuries" soon I would hope.
