Phil Jackson talks Pistons

Post#1 » by russkopp » Mon Mar 3, 2014 2:10 am

Phil basically says he worked with Joe briefly in the offseason as a favor to Gores. He convinced Gores that the coach should be a GM's decision. He says he helps Gores as an unpaid advisor even though he admits the moves haven't worked. He ends it by saying what we all know, we've made curious free agent signings...but Drummond is good.

So they did get to interview Budenholzer, and Dumars went with Cheeks?

"Your GM should pick the coach. That will be 1.5 million dollars, please."
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

What advice has Phil been giving to Gores throughout the season that hasnt worked out?

And it's pretty much guaranteed Phil wanted Budenholzer (he hates/respects the Spurs and often refers to them as his greatest opponent in his coaching career behind the Sloan coached Jazz teams in the 90s)

Phil may be just as big of an idiot as Joe D when it comes to being a GM but there is no doubt all players and NBA personnel really respect this guy

Joe's move reeks of a friend hooking up a friend, Cheeks and Dumars were close, just like Grant and Mike Brown in Cleveland (who are now stuck with Mr. Potato Head for 4 more years)

Maybe Phil can tell Gores that choosing Isiah is a horrible idea

One thing I noticed that was kind of interesting was the way Phil referred to Gores, calling him the owner instead of Tom. I think his friendship with Gores was overblown by the media and Phil is just doing this to get his name in the GM circles.

To be fair, it seemed like Budenholzer was a long shot anyways because his connection with Ferry in Atlanta, and he was hired long before Cheeks got the job.

I assume Budenholzer would have turned down any Piston offer if it was made. You don't turn down interviews as it's a bad look, but you make it known you don't want the gig in it. Top coaching candidates are rightfully choosy of their landing spots - especially their first gigs. We got Cheeks because nobody else likely wanted to some here at all.

Interesting read, thanks. Of the three Pistons related questions, his first two answers make it sound like he's still involved with the team and could be discussing a more prominant position. But then the last answer where he says 'Tom is a generous guy, but I don't want to make him think its more than it is...' pretty much puts an end to the theory of him taking over as GM/President. Though who know with Phil

I know, I've been saying for months JVG comments after Frank got fired is probably sentiment shared by many coaches.

Hopefully he forces his way in as GM. I dont want him as our GM but if Gores is really stupid enough to be considering complete failure GMs like Isaiah then just give me Jackson and let us roll the dice.

I would have been much happier with Budz. But, he hasn't exactly revitalized the Hawks this season. I know the team has been getting destroyed by injuries, but they weren't incredibly impressive before they started falling like flies either.

Chris Mannix was on with Matt Dery today and basically said that if a presidential role opens up with the Pistons and Gores offered Phil the job, he would be interested, but he's not the type to lobby for it with Dumars still employed.

So all that talk in the article about 'not wanting to make it seem like its more than it is' sounds like someone just trying to cover their tracks out of respect to Dumars, so people don't think he was lobbying to steal his job, when he eventually does take over as President.

Almost seems inevitable at this point. Gores needs new leadership in the front office. He doesn't have a lot of other options. He's had ongoing discussions with Phil as an advisor for almost a year now (reports say they started talking towards the end of last year). Now reports say Phil would be interested in the job if it opened up. Hard to paint a much clearer picture of what's going on here. They are probably just keeping Dumars on until the end of the season out of respect.

I remember he said he wanted a role with a team like what Riley has in Miami. If he ends up getting that role and it being with the Pistons, I don't know how any fan wouldn't be extremely excited. That's essentially him saying I want to recruit all the biggest stars in the league to come and play with Drummond and win multiple championships, and he has the power to actually make it happen.

Like Dan Gilbert said recently, LeBron didn't go to Miami because of Wade, he went because of Riley.

Phil can have that same effect on a franchise, in terms of attracting top stars.

Phil Jackson doesnt owe Joe Dumars a single thing yet he has been nothing but respectful to the man before the season started and now even when it seems Dumars is out the door.

Like other posters have commented, Phil Jackson is the type of guy that can bring in someone like Melo or another big superstar bc we know our dysfunctional roster and terrible weather (worst winter in 130 years) isnt attracting any superstars anytime soon.

Even if Phil is a complete dud Id rather have him than another crappy retread. The only person I would take over Phil is someone like Pritchard or Phoenix GM.

I agree with everything you said. Though I disagree on the last part. I'd take Phil over both those guys.

However, I think if he does get hired as President, we'll likely end up with a situation where Phil hires his own GM to work under him, like a Pritchard type guy. So there's a good chance we could end up with the best of both worlds.

I actually don't mind the Idea of Phil as president and a pritchard type GM under him, one of our biggest problems has been a lack of checks and balances.

I'm not interested in seeing former players as GM's anymore.
