Its unsurprising.

The writing has been on the wall since relatively early on in this season when it was clear what should have been clear from the moment the moves in question happened- the team has not improved. Not one iota.

In fact we may actually have taken a step back this year even if we're only looking at the short term.

Farewell, Dumars. Hopefully 10 years from now fans will mostly just remember the first half of your tenure rather than the second half.

Considering he's at the end of his contract, this is really just semantics to allow him to look like the bigger person and save face and protect Gores from having to not bring him back.

Regardless, I hope it's true.

True enough.

Really, he doesn't have to be fired nor does he have to resign.

He can simply not be renewed.

Now for the fun part where they'll be a ton of public and non public interviews this off season. And that's not even counting our new head coach too.

Should be fun to say the least.

TBH, I don't trust Gores. I think we will become the NYK of the Central Division with Gores doing his best Dolan impression. He has no clue how to run a team as evidenced by his ridiculous playoff mandates and his being too cheap to amnesty Gordon.

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. I know resigning isn't as humiliating as being outright fired, but to me a resignation still sounds like an employee was put in a bad spot and was forced to quit.

If this is a calculated move by both Joe and ownership to handle the end of his Pistons tenure in the most amicable, classiest way possible, shouldn't they just let his contract expire without any hoopla? Either way, I guess I'm glad that it won't be unceremonious as when Cheeks being let go...we need to honor Dumars' 30 years of service to this franchise, and the first 25 years were truly great.

Even though the last 5 years have clouded our opinion of him, I'm pretty sure in due time when the team rebounds, everyone will remember fondly of him (and let's not pretend he's not leaving some solid pieces like Moose and Drummond in place for the next GM). Regardless, we need to recognize that he might be the second greatest Piston of all time. We don't have 3 championships and 5 conference titles without him.

Gores needs to stick to being an owner and give the new GM the freedom to build the team properly. We need someone with a clear plan.

Dolan is a lot of things but cheap isn't what I would use to describe him though. The guy blows through daddy's money like it's nothing since he knows it's pocket change.

Whoever the new GM is, he needs to tell Gores straight up that in order to take the job, Gores has to take a backseat approach, indefinitely.

It's a sad day in the history of this franchise. There is no hope of getting better than Joe with this owner. I don't have any confidence whatsoever in Gores making this situation any better. Please sell....

I'm actually glad Joe is moving on. This franchise is nothing like the one he was attached to when Bill Davidson was around. He was the only one left and in over his head. You could say the game has passed him by but IMO the situation changed too quickly when Davidson passed and he was left holding the bag and making decisions he wasn't capable of on his own. Good luck to you Joe.

I guess announcing his plan to resign now would allow Gores to begin a replacement search ASAP without having to worry about being supersecret and having to worry about leaks and such - which will be necessary because we'll need a GM for draft prep and to put together a coaching search all in short order.

Also announcing this now could lead to a better reception for Dumars at the Bad Boys reunion game as it could be the public farewell rather than the "My gawd, this guy has sucked hard lately - imma boo his ass" response.

If we had an owner worth a darn, he wouldve let us rebuild and not have forced Joe's had. Granted, Joe's moves were atrocious this offseason but he had to make moves instead of just letting us go through growing pains with KCP/Monroe/Drummond.

Even with another GM, if Gores meddles we will never be a good team. So, I agree I will be on pins and needles through the hiring process.
