But that three ball tho..
He could be a better version of CV, assuming he learns to shoot it a bit faster, that is one drawn out shot.

This is just, the most obvious pro-state-of-Michigan homerism ever, but I'd love to find a way to get both Payne and McGary in the second round (if he declares). A creative GM would no shortage of ways of acquiring either player.
Monroe/Payne/Mitchell
Drummond/McGary/Harrellson
Not saying the bench is full of world beaters, but that's enough competent, skilled, big bodies to bang in practice and for Rasheed to mold.
If I had to pick McGary or Payne, I'd go with the former only because I think Mitchell could hold down backup PF if afforded the opportunity to develop on the court.

Let's play a game. Identify that player! All stats are per 40 pace adjusted
Player A
12/13-18.7pts 12.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, .7steals, 2.2 blocks 53FG%, 40.8 3p%
13/14-21.6pts 12.7 rebounds, 4 assists, .8steals, 1.3 blocks 53.1FG%, 35.6 3p%
Player B
12/13-16.7pts 12 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.2steals, 2 blocks 54.7FG%, 38.1 3p%
13/14-22.7pts 10.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, .7steals, 1.3 blocks 51.2FG%, 40 3p%
Player A is Jerelle Benimon. Player B is Adrian Payne.
In addition to likely going undrafted, Benimon is a year younger than Payne, doesn't have a small lung, and can bring the ball up the court and pass very well. Why draft the in-state kid with a 1st rounder when you can get a better player for basically nothing?
Not that Payne isn't a really good player mind you, but he's not worth the 8th pick. Benimon is just very under-rated.
Payne and McGary would be an excellent pair of backup bigs though, I'd love to have them form our bench.

I hope we don't waste a lotto pick in a stacked draft on Carl Landry.

Love Payne but we're in no man's land with him. The #8 is much too high and we won't get him in the second. Maybe buy a late first or move up from #40?

That's why you sign Bennimon as an undrafted free agent. Don't spend resources and get a better version of the same player.

If he lands on the Spurs, he will be a stud.
I don't think he has star potential in the NBA. But, he can be a very nice role player.

Everybody that goes to the Spurs are not studs. If he's a stud, he will be a stud.

If they acquired an extra pick somehow, I would look hard at him with the second of those picks. It depends what they plan on doing with Monroe and Smith though. If they are keeping one or both of them, then using a 1st round pick on Payne just to be a backup big wouldn't make sense. If they end up trading both Monroe and Smith though, I'd be intrigued by a Dre-Payne frontcourt pairing. I think he is the ideal compliment to Drummond, in terms of skillset. Similar to how Taj Gibson would be a great fit with Drummond. I see Payne being basically a taller, longer Gibson with 3pt range. Essentially a poor mans Rasheed, which is exactly the type of big they need next to Dre, and there aren't a lot of bigs who can do both today - play tough defense and make 3's. Smith can only do one and Monroe can't do either. So if they do end up trading both Monroe/Smith and acquired an extra pick in the deals somehow, I'd take a chance on him in the mid-late area.
If he were still on the board in the 2nd round, I'd definitely take him there, even if just to be a backup. He's got all the qualities to be a great complimentary player on a winning team in the NBA.

So you basically described Lamarcus Aldridge with All NBA defense...so no.

I don't know wtf you are talking about. Aldridge has no 3pt shot and is a poor defender, so how the **** do you read a description of Payne as being a tough defender who can make 3's and think Lamarcus Aldridge? And where did I say he would be anything close to the level of talent as Aldridge to even come up with that comparison?
So I don't see your analogy at all. I described him as a poor mans Rasheed. Unless you think Aldridge is a poor mans Rasheed...
