Smith's biggest problem with the Pistons?

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Sat Mar 29, 2014 5:42 pm

Which of these issues is Josh Smith's biggest problem with the Pistons?
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

The first thing is his bball IQ. It's pretty low. But that's fixable with coaching. I can't imagine Thibadau having trouble with Smith. He knows how to discipline his players.

Then it's the position he's playing. He's NOT a SF and we don't have starting bigs that can shoot the ball. We basically have no shooters and he's clogged out so he shoots a jumper.

Smith is basically a very good role player. He can do everything well except play the right way lol

His breathing.

Im sure Smith will play better with a contender. after watching him in person Im convinced that he is just doing this on purpose. He is trying to get Cheeks, Dumars fired. They insulted his ego and he is trying to sabotage the team. He wants out of Detroit and he wants the Pistons to get the least amount of value. Its personal and all about ego.

Josh Smith is what an adult temper tantrum looks like.

I picked the 4th option.I think alot of people are caught up in the team stinking and the fact smith is stinking it up at sf and people are taking out all the teams issues on smith. But what I find funny are the ones who say hes garbage, isnt talented,he is who he is.You put him on a number of different playoff teams and watch all the nay sayers say, were was this josh,I wouldnt mind keeping him if he was playing like this.A big part of the problem is playing all 3 bigs together, playing him at sf,having no other shooters in the lineup worth a damn (besides maybe singler),having no coach to hold all players accountable,no coaching staff to implement any sort of system, etc, etc, etc

Cue the homerism.

I'd say it's a factor of all the poll positions. But his comically low BBIQ is really the root of his problems. He is not a smart person. His decision making is awful, his inter-personnel relations are terrible, and it all culminates with his consistent underachieving.

Communication. He didn't assert himself on the team. He's not out there really talking on either side of the ball a lot. Him, Jennings, and Stuckey are just bad influences at this point. Detroit could use a leader that's vocal and holds himself accountable.

I would say chemistry. This is Smith's first season playing the 3 full-time and 4 part-time. It was the complete opposite in Atlanta. Smith is still a stat-stuffer, he just needs a coach to help him understand that he can still dominate the paint at the 3. Good coaching can work wonders

He was on a playoff team the last 6 years and consistently made poor decisions that infuriated/befuddled coaches, players, fans, analysts, etc.

He's always been stubborn, disobedient. Ten years in, he is still shooting long, inefficient jumpers when they are far and away the weakest part of his game. Approaching 30, he should be a steadying veteran influence on a young team. But instead, his new team/fanbase is having the exact same conversations his old team/fanbase had for the last decade.

Every season for the last 3 years, he's set some new record for inefficient shooting, yet he keeps chucking away. He led ATL in turnovers for years. He's been benched/suspended by every pro coach he's ever had.

At some point fans just have to accept, he is who he is. He ain't gonna grow up. Ain't gonna become a 20/10 beast and perennial All-Star.

The bball IQ of a turtle, historically bad shot selection, little leadership qualities, literally delusional in his mind with respect to the player he actually is, completely fallen off the map on defense.

I know your pain. :( It still makes me a little sad to see Josh play so far below what he's capable of.

I don't know how you guys feel about the coaching situation in Detroit, but Josh was doomed from the start in Atlanta. Everyone knows how clueless Josh and Mike Woodson are now, but imagine rookie teenager Josh and rookie head coach Woodson together. Now imagine having Al Harrington and Antoine Walker as the team leaders. Josh has always lacked the proper guidance and discipline that he needed. After so many years of that, he seems to be completely lost at this point. Feeding into his delusion and playing him full-time at the 3 was probably the last thing he needed.

Side note: Speaking of Woodson, did any of you have any real opinions about him when he was with the Pistons? Obviously the team was very successful, but I've always wondered how much he really had to do with it.

I picked selfish because he's looked lazy and disinterested for most of the season.
his bad d and his bad shot selection really come down to being lazy and selfish.
For the love of god, trade this POS ASAP.

Great post! I've been trying to tell people Smith could be salvaged if he could ever receive some decent coaching and guidance. The guy is easily one of the most talented players in the league but has zero basketball sense because he's had nothing but a parade of clowns for coaches.

To answer your other question, Woodson was just along for the ride. It was 100% Larry Brown and 0% Woodson when they won the championship. He should be sending LB a nice Christmas card every year he coaches in the league.

If Smith was the player who you're telling, he would be playing in the D-League.

He shot bad, but never that bad. We're doing it our best, bring to ruin players' career. I think Smith with Hollins as HC could shut the mouth to so many people. He's not great, but he's a very good player at his position.

The Pistons are becoming the Lions of the NBA. A team once known for reviving players careers is now the place where talented players come and leave with their careers ruined. Most fans refuse to accept that, so they keep blaming the players instead and Dumars for signing them. This idea that Smith is the one that ruined the Pistons is revisionist history. This franchise has been garbage for 5 years now and he isn't the first to have his career ruined by coming here. So is it really Dumars signing all the wrong players or the players signing with the wrong team?

Iverson came here off of an MVP caliber season and left with his career in shambles and never recovered.

Gordon & Villanueva signed here in their primes, both coming off career years with bright futures ahead. A few years spent in Auburn Hills and both are now effectively out of the league.

Smith & Jennings both came here in their primes from playoff teams, playing essentially the same roles they play here, and now both are on a 26 win lotto team instead. The same record this team had last year without them. So is it them or the Pistons?

If it just happened once or twice, I could buy that it was their fault, but when its happened to 5 different players now and the team has stayed garbage even after they left, its the franchise, not the players. Its no coincidence that this started almost exactly when Karen took over either. I don't think people realize how important great ownership is, and how much Mr Davidson meant to this franchise and keeping everything in order. Its also no coincidence that all of those players had no problem succeeding for their previous franchises playing the same way. The new owners of this franchise (first Karen and now Gores) are the ones who have turned it to garbage, not the new players who came here from successful teams and suddenly find themselves in a dysfunctional mess.

The coach mutiny happened long before Smith and Jennings ever got here. The Rip, Curry, and Iverson debacle happened long before Gordon and Villanueva got here. This franchise has been a mess for years and it starts at the top, not the bottom.

Ironically, the players who got out before it was too late (Afflalo, Chauncey, Amir, Sheed, Dice) all continued successful careers elsewhere. Was it really just a matter of the Pistons choosing all the wrong players to keep and all the wrong players to trade? I have to say the odds of that are slim. Its more like the players who turned out good did so by getting out of here in time, and the ones who stayed or came later turned out bad because of this ineptl franchise.

I agree that Dumars is to blame along with ownership for the team's problems, but I don't blame him for the signings and trades because they were good players at the time he acquired them. What I blame him and ownership for is how they handled those players once they got here and how they've run the franchise. The whole inmates running the asylum with no consequences thing has gone on way too long. It not enough to just bring good players into your franchise. If the culture of your franchise is a mess, no one or two players is going to change that, and you end up ruining the player instead.

It happens all the time where bad franchises bring in good players and those players suddenly turn bad. Most recent example being the Deng trade to Cleveland, but you see it all the time. As hard as it may be to accept for some, the Pistons have become one of those bad franchise that acquires good players and ruins their careers.

The Calderon trade is another example I forgot to mention earlier. He came here a very good PG, but after a few months here he turned into a complete mess. Then he leaves to Dallas and now looks like the same old PG again. And I bet when Deng leaves Cleveland this summer, if he goes to a good franchise, he will go back to being an all-star caliber player again. Same goes for Smith if we trade him.

I could even see Stuckey ending up succeeding somewhere else if he gets on with a well run franchise.

Its the Pistons front office and ownership ruining these players, not the players ruining the Pistons.

Can't blame Gores for the state of the franchise IMO.

He bought a poisoned chalice!

JOE is the guy who runs basketball operations. He hires the coaches and the staff these players rely on.

Our player development is terrible. Our signings reek of desperation. Our coaches have been absymal.

You can go all the way back to when Mr D was alive and refused to pay the tax and STILL blame Joe for the slow destruction of a great team!

Look at all the trades/draft picks we made during our long stretch of playoffs/ECF and work out why we didn't acquire a war chest of future picks. Jie had been on a team that declined slowly but surely and we all hoped he'd be smart enough to avoid it as GM/VP

But Joe wasn't smart enough. His job is to be ahead of the curve, not behind it! He failed and IMO him walking is happening 5 or 6 years too late
