Does it have to be a sign and trade?

When can it occur?

He can't be offered in any trade deals once the season ends as he's a free agent.

They can work a sign and trade with Monroe.

If they resign him outright, I am not sure if they would have to wait until November to trade him or not.

But, that's basically it. They sacrificed most of their trade leverage when the trade deadline passed.

Ugh. We probably can't trade Smith. And it seems we need to spend training camp and the start of next season with the 3 headed monster again.

Need to hope for a sign and trade (or a miracle trade of Smith).

I'm hoping our new GM can pull a miracle trade with Smith , something along the lines of the Gay or Barganani trade. I know his contract is worse and he's such a knuckle head but a guy can hope.

If we were to trade him it would be a sign and trade most likely anyways - so whenever free-agency opens, in July I believe. And if a team tries to poach him, we match and can't trade him until December and then can be traded to any team but the team he signed the offer sheet to for a full year.

It's very unlikely we move Monroe. Dumars would be insane if he moved a talented 23yr big like Moose.

Dumars isn't going to be making any decisions

If he's in a S&T he can't be moved with any other players. I.e. we can't deal Smith & Monroe.

Smith to Sacramento for McCallum, Thompson, and Terry. Immediately after the season ends.

Jason Thompson needs a change of scenery and would be a nice big off the bench at a reasonable deal. Terry is a $5M expiring and I'd take Ray McCallum over Jennings any day.

If Smith can get his sh^t together and play within himself, he and Cousins can form a strong front court with Gay. Sacramento took a chance on Gay and his terrible deal, their owner likes to take risks and this would be worth it for them.

Then re-sign Monroe to no more than $12M a year and commit to the Monroe/Drummond tandem for atleast a year under a head coach that will do whatever it takes to make it work. Hollins is the popular choice but I'm curious as to why he doesn't have a job already.

I'm of the thinking you don't trade Moose unless it's something amazing.
Even with smith on the roster, you can't just give away a 23yr old with Monroes talent. Smith can be traded, just need to be patient.
look at what the Raps got for Gay and he was sucking worse than Smith if that can be believed.

btw remember when people thought Monroe was better than Cousins? Man... I rank Cousins up there behind Davis as one of the best young bigs in the league. Imagine if Sacramento drafted Drummond instead of the overhyped Robinson

This is spot on. We simply can't let Monroe walk, even if it's a max deal. You can't let a 23 year old 7 footer whose established himself as a strong starter in the league walk for nothing. Smith has established himself in the league, I refuse to believe he's untradeable.

You might be right. Well, the only person we should trade Monroe for is Cousins. That's it, no if's, and's, or but's. If we're not trading Monroe for Cousins it only makes sense to re-sign Monroe to 4yr/52mil deal.

If we keep Monroe we have to trade Drummond, they are both centers, one of them has to go.

I don't see Sacramento letting go of McCallum. He's been solid as hell and looks like a draft steal.
