What would you trade the #1 pick for?

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Mon Apr 28, 2014 6:29 am

So you're the new GM of the Pistons. We win the f--king lottery!!! Every team is calling because they want to see if you'd trade the pick. Of course you would, but it would have to be crazy good. I know Wiggins would look good in a Piston uniform, but can you think of any trades that would make you do the swap?

Actually, if real life, if I'm a new GM, I'd prefer to stay employed for a few years, so the most risk adverse thing to do is to draft Wiggins, and tell Gores it will take 3 years for him to develop. So at least you have that long to cash those paychecks. But that's no fun :-)

For me, the crazy trade offer would have to include most, if not all of the following:
- the other team needs to take on Jennings and Smith
- the other team provides us with their first rounder this year (and maybe another in the future)
- the other team needs to give us a solid 3D wing player

Geez, I'm looking at that, and it still might not be enough. Guess it depends on how high this year's first rounder is.

Ok, here's my first stab at it. Orlando is the trading partner.
Orlando out: pick #4, Afflalo, Nelson
Detroit out: pick #1, Jennings, Smith

With the #4 pick, we get Exum.

PG: Exum, Nelson
SG: KCP, Singler
SF: Afflalo, Singler
PF: Monroe, ???
C: Drummond, Monroe

I like this a lot better that what we were this year.

Wouldn't give it up for anything sans a superstar.

Scenario 1: If the Hornets give us Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday and willing to take on Smellings, I wouldn't even think twice....I'll give them Monroe for free as well (in a separate sign and trade).

But unless the Hornets'GM is Dumars, that's probably not gonna happen

Scenario 2: If the Thunder lost the Grizzlies in the first round, especially with the emergence of Reggie Jackson, Westbrook might be available. We can take on Perkins's contract if they take on Smellings; Smith could thrive alongside KD and Ibaka.

Figure out how to deal Monroe later

Scenario 3: swap with the Twolves

We get: Rubio, Love, their first round pick

They get: Smellings, our #1 pick (figure out how to deal Monroe later)

If we somehow can end up Wiggins/Parker with Minn's pick.....game over for the league

Scenario 4: NY trades Iman Shunpert, Carmelo Anthony, future first round pick and be willing to take on Smellings

This only happens if Anthony is interested so he opts into his final year and sign an extensions with us. With that trade NY will suck for a loooooooong time, so eventually we are gonna get another high lottery pick in a few years

Love is all about the Lakers, why bring him here? There is not any chances of he signs here. And I don't think he fits too much with Drummond, they steal rebounds from the other and until Drummond develops his game, a terrible frontcourt on defense.

I don't think I would trade the number 1 pick for anybody, wiggins/parker have too much potential for me to want to give it up.

#1 / Smith / Jennings for Westbrook / Lamb / Perkins / #21

That's about the only (semi?) realistic thing I'd say yes to, even then it's questionable.

I'm not trading that draft pick unless OKC call up and offers Durant for Smith and the #1. Miami offering LeBron (who agrees to resign) for the #1 and Smith. Or New Orleans offers Anthony Davis and Ryan Anderson for the #1 and Smith.

That's it. That's it, those three deals. Otherwise, I'm taking Wiggins and moving into the summer looking to move Smith and Jennings for peanuts.

I don't think that there is anything else left to say here.

6 things
* our 1st back from Charlotte
* 14th and 18th from Phoenix
* 16th and 19th from Chicago
* Smoove cancelled. Maybe Chicago uses Boozer's expiring to take Smoove and Jerebko in this deal.

A lucky re-set.
Insist on Jerebko's inclusion so we aren't paying extra next year for Boozer.
Buying out Boozer is okay. He would listen, because he would get offers from other teams.
Yes, we still have Jennings, but whatdayado?

EDIT: And I would consider doing it without the Smoove/Boozer part. Tough to determine actual values.

I like the shape of this trade, but maybe we could get more.
You have us saving money for next season too and I assume the trade still works.
Maybe do a July 1st thing and have them absorb Jerebko's expiring.
It is IMPERATIVE to get rid of Smoove though.
And, yea, I totes want Jennings gone too.

So....cool idea. 8-)

I get it. BUT, you must think Wiggins is a lock to be a MVP candidate? If so, forgive the doubters please.

Wiggins (and to a slightly lesser extent Parker) is supposedly the next Lebron/Durant. We'd control him for 7 years at least. I can't see how trading that is worth some mid firsts and dumping a contract that'll be gone in 3 years as a worst case anyway.

Absolutely nothing

I take Parker & then focus on getting rid of the 2 air heads so we can get this back on track.

No, Wiggins definitely isn't a lock for anything. But, I do know that any team that drafts him essentially has control over his contract situation for the next 4-9 years. And, why forfeit your control and his potential on a couple years of a known commodity that probably isn't significantly better in the short term?

I think this draft is overrated, so I'll trade the #1 pick for a couple of players.
Anthony Davis
Damien Lillard
Steph Curry
James Harden
Russel Westbrook
I'll even trade the #1 pick for Cousins

I'd package the pick with Josh Smith in exchange for any decent head coach, small forward, and a few lower round picks.

Interesting posts. Is Wiggins and Parker guaranteed to be great, perennial All Stars? I guess that's what this comes down to. I like Neptune's list. There are probably 10-15 players who are All Stars for sure that have already proven it, that I'd have to consider in the trade for #1.

No. But who ever was? No draft pick is ever guaranteed to be an all-star, champion or hall of fame player. The reality is, those players are incredibly rare. But, just because we can't see the future doesn't provide a valuable claim to diminish Wiggins, Parker or Embiid's potential value.

It's been 44 years since the last time the pistons had the number 1 pick in the draft, I won't just trade it away if we get it again unless its for a superstar or young all star who will be a superstar.

No, however they have the best shot at it as anyone who has been drafted in the past 4 or 5 years.

Outside of Davis, Lillard, or Curry, I cant see another player i'd move this pick for.

The Lebron/KD thing isnt even realistic in a pretend world plus Lebron is 30 this year.

Our age timeline is a huge aspect of this discussion, the player would have to fit the Monroe/Drummond timeline.
