OT: What do you think Sterling's punishment will be?

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Mon Apr 28, 2014 6:37 am

I know this has been touched on in the "Around the League" thread, but I think it deserves it's own thread.

I'm thinking that Sterling is 100% done. If the NBA verifies that the recording is of Sterling, and it appears that it is true, he will be forced to sell the team. The transition will be sticky - forcing someone to sell something kills any leverage to get a good price, which is a big issue with hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, and a low price actually hurts other owners too. So I bet this week that it is announce the Sterling is immediately gone from any kind of operational control of the team, and has a year to sell it.

I'd imagine he'll sell...

Magic could get a group together :-)

He's disgraced the league long enough

To be honest, I don't think this was a big deal after all. He's taped illegally in private by a whore; if I could secretly record everything about each public figure's private lives, then I would be billionaires within a year. Each week, I would release something sexual/racial to TMZ/insert your company, I would make some good money.

Anywho, to get back to the topic, he probably have to sell by the end of the season.....for him, it's been a good investment.

Yes a whore secretly recorded him...

And from what I've seen he didn't want her drawing attention to the fact she was having "****" with other dudes, especially if they were African-Americans!

Sterling is a racist slum lord and has been for years. It's about time the league did something about it

Does anybody else find it ironic that Sterling is dating a girl who is half black half hispanic? I listened to the tape... it sounded like an old JEALOUS man who was trying to keep threats out of his GFs life. He should be scared, he's older than dirt. I'd be shocked if anything other than a huge fine and some counseling were going to happen.

IF CP3, Doc and the remaining Clippers chose to wear uniforms with no logos on them how would that go down?

I'm not talking warm ups...I mean if they tried to play the game that way?

Isn't CP3 the VP of the Players Association? If so it's likely dude has serious respect around the league...

This could escalate quickly if the players choose to do something.

Imagine if every player in the playoffs made a stand?

Not really. Slave owners were known to rape their slave women.

He'll step down and his wife will run the team. It's why she was at the game.

Honestly I think he will just get a fine, go to a sensitivity course, and he will continue to be a POS. He'll step up his donations to charity, apologize to either Sharpton or Jesse, and that'll be it.

I don't think the league can force him to sell, and people will still watch the clips, so he will make money regardless. Cash rules everything, and he has too much to really be affected.

Or at least that's my take.

The NBA should allow for every person in the organization to break their contracts. From there, they can decide to work for a racist or not. The problem is, I doubt anyone is willing to go there until ownership changes. So, more than likely, Adam Silver will attempt to remove Sterling from his position ASAP.

The owners should come out and say they don't want him here, that he was completely wrong, and is terrible for the league to have. Then suspend him, fine him, try to get him away from ownership and to his wife or whomever. The Donald era needs to end.

Sterling also has a slave-owner complex. I remember reading an article where he brought a group of women to the Clip's lockerroom and told them to admire the "black bodies" or some sort with him. Very disturbing. He thinks all the blacks in the league are his playthings.

They'll probably try to pressure him into selling to the league, who will flip it to a new owner. I'm hoping they just move to Seatle.

If Michael Jordan- the only black NBA owner, said something racist towards hispanic, asian or white people, do you honestly believe all these people would be calling for Jordan to be forced to sell his team?

Just curious what people think, I'm not implying that Jordan is a racist.

This is what's surprising to me. He's been to district court for mistreating his tenants, not renting to black people. His racism is public record. And yet, NOW they're shocked he said something racist?!?

From what I heard on ESPN, the NBA's constitution can only force an owner to sell if he can no longer meet his financial obligations to the team.

They very well may not have any real power here. If Sterling will fight to keep his team, it will likely turn into an ugly court battle. Especially as Sterling hasn't broken any laws.

After a vote from the other owners, I think the NBA will buy the Clippers from Sterling at Market value which will be assessed by an independent arbitrator. Then, the NBA will sell the team to whomever is interested in buying the team in a bidding war.

I wouldn't be surprised if the new owners decide to relocate the team.

WHAT!?!

Yeah- let's totally move out of one of the biggest markets now that the team's popularity is at an all-time high!

FYI. The Clippers as a franchise has never been a huge money maker. The only thing LA does for the Clips is maybe attendance. And, a new location could provide the same exact thing. Heck, they don't even have their own arena. I don't see many people if ever wearing Clippers jersey's. LA hasn't done crap for that team outside of attendance. They probably don't even have a good television deal out of it like the Lakers.

Since the NBA has been inconsistent with Sterling, it's suddenly okay to allow blatant evidence to float around for all of the public to see and hear? Even if someone prominent like Michael Jordan were to say such things? This is not a civil court case, where it's virtually one man's word against another's. The evidence is irrefutable, and the NBA needs to take action.

Also, the NBA's constitution is not available to the public. What power Adam Silver has as commissioner in this situation is speculation to say the least. There's a large taint on the NBA's image right now, and will continue to grow the longer Sterling remains as an owner. It's bad for business, so to answer your original question, yes people would be calling for Jordan's head if he claimed he did not want a particular race to attend his games.
