Doc Rivers?

Post#1 » by Invictus88 » Mon Apr 28, 2014 11:26 pm

It's the offseason for us and Donald Sterling's idiocy looks to finally be catching up with him.

In response to these events we now have the following quote from: http://espn.go.com/nba/playoffs/2014/st ... d-sterling

Rivers said he isn't sure he could continue being the team's coach and executive vice president of player personnel with Sterling as the owner.

This is likely totally jumping the gun but what would people think about Rivers being coach/exec VP of personnel here in Detroit?

What is Sterling's loss could be our gain?

I wouldn't be against it but I think he will have better opportunities elsewhere.

You'd pretty much have to include him in the possibles, but it seems more likely Sterling is on his way out than Doc.

Doc Rivers as GM would be more interesting.

no way doc rivers takes over a pretty much rebuilding pistons. i can see doc being a option if either pacers or okc gets knocked out of the 1st round.

If i'm Tom Gores, I would be around the Clippers all the time. Pre-write the paperwork, travel with my accountant and lawyer. I'd be doing Doc Rivers busywork (mowing the lawn, dishes, laundry, etc) around the house to make this happen.

Ok lets think about this:

Doc Rivers decides he wants out of LA and he wants to coach a contender. He looks at each team in the NBA and decides teh best place to live and best place to win a title is............

Detroit?

Seriously why do people immediately after getting high start threads on RealGM?

I have never in my life thought/said "Wow I have had too much to drink tonight I better start a new thread on RealGM".

If Doc wanted to be in a rebuilding situation he'd be in Boston. He said as much.

Looking at how things are unfolding in LA, I would assume Doc stands pat. He has a great contract, front office control and a championship contending roster. Once they get rid of Sterling- which might be as soon as this summer- he should be good again.

I wouldn't just assume a bunch of 50 win teams are going to be firing their coaches. Its certainly possible, but to expect it to happen is actually more far-fetched than the idea of Doc coming here, and as of now Detroit, Utah, and Minnesota would be his only options should he resign. If you are imagining other jobs open that don't exist, you might be the high one here.

Rivers is in the first year of a three year deal with the Clippers. Even if he quit he couldn't just show up in another town and start coaching until his contract with the Clippers runs out.

If he resigns and is no longer being paid by them, I don't think they can stop him from earning an income elsewhere.

If the owners vote for Sterling to sell, I really don't see Doc leaving.

They can't stop him from doing TV or working at Subway. But I'm almost certain they can stop him from coaching in the NBA for the remainder of his contract. If not you would have coaches quitting and working out new deals every year.

sterling will turn this into an ugly legal battle and will probably control the team into the next season regardless of whether or not the owners vote him out (they will). i could see sterling eventually settling with a sale of his team to the nba.

Coaches 'retire' all the time in sports and then end up coming out of retirement to coach another team. Doc could do the same if he wanted. Also, this being unique circumstance, there's already talk of players possibly being allowed to become FA's if they want, so I can't see them preventing Doc from working elsewhere if he wanted.

Not if they are under contract. If you sign for x amount of years you are bound to that team until then unless they fire you.

So your saying that something like the COY winner from the previous yr who takes his team to the ECF would never get fired if say a HoF coach happened to leave the Sixers?

Yeah I cant see any GM do that either......

If Doc became available +20 coaches would be worried about there job.

Just keep throwing me those easy fastballs

Hell no would Doc ever consider coming here. He didn't want to rebuild in the Celtics where he won chips, why would he come here? For Dre? No, we're a rebuild team and coaches that won chips rarely go to rebuild teams.

As of now, the Rockets, OKC, and GSW are tired of their coaches and have long lived past their expiration date. I'm guessing a lot of people aren't aware their coaching struggles right now in the playoffs? There's a reason why Hollins, Vinny Del Negro, and George Karl were fired/not renewed. Proven coaches that won chips like Doc are going to be in demand if he goes on the market. Teams would happily not renew their current coaches and or fire them for Doc. Pretty simple really.

It's a nice fantasy though, as of right now. HOU and GSW are not happy with their coaches. They are underperforming and or don't actually exhibit good coaching to get them over the 2nd round.

There is zero % chance of doc coming regardless of how the clippers ownership plays out.

I'm hoping the pacers get knocked out and Vogel is subsequently fired allowing us to move in. Vogel is more than likely the best realistic coaching hire
