Last time you were excited for a Pistons coach hiring?

Looking back over a decade, I can't honestly say I've ever been an excited for a Pistons coach hiring. Heck, even Chuck Daly wasn't hailed as a savior of the franchise when he was hired (albeit, I was too young to even have an opinion in the 80's).
Rick Carlisle wasn't a highly lauded coach. I wasn't excited for Larry Brown, because I thought Carlisle was doing a fantastic job. Saunders made sense, and was a safe hire, but wasn't an exciting hire either. Then, the following four hires of Curry, Kuester, Frank and Cheeks obviously received groans and timid optimism at best.
I'm legitimately excited for Stan Van Gundy. I get excited because we have a coach that has a history of developing players- something Detroit has sorely lacked. His first season in Orlando was the first season Dwight Howard became a first-team NBA defender, and I hope he can give Drummond that same juice. He developed Jameer Nelson into an under 6 foot shoot first point guard out of college into an all-star. He built an offensive system that complimented their best player and excelled with it.
It was just odd when I thought back and really couldn't identify when I was ever excited about a new coaching hire. This may be my first.

I'm really pumped right now but he's got some work to do but this is a great day for Piston fans. No more BC or Isiah rumors either now.

He definitely has his work cut out for him. But, considering one of the things he was sold on was "building his own team", I don't see him just sitting on his hands and walking into next season with the same roster. I expect changes this summer. I definitely don't see both Monroe and Smith coming back anymore.

I agree, I'm extremely excited. This is the best coach we have had since Larry Brown, and I really believe that coaches can make a big difference in this league. Hopefully, we keep our draft pick at 8 or move up and he makes some good personnel decisions with some signings and trades.
I definitely don't see both Monroe and Smith coming back either, and with how everything is currently setup, I think Monroe is going to be the one gone. I also wonder if SVG will be able to work with Jennings or if he will ultimately attempted to be traded.

Larry Brown. Easily.
Carlisle is a good coach and for all intensive purposes, he did get a bit of a raw deal.
But when Larry Brown is out there and wants the job, you take him. Even with his baggage and eventual rocky departure.

I was still in elementary school when brown got hired. As a result this is the most exciting hire I completely comprehend.

I was this excited about the Larry Brown hire, but I was also cautious because they had just fired a great coach to hire him. In this case there's really nothing to lose, so I'm probably more excited about this hire in a way.

Not to mention I love Drummond.
Anyways, y'all got a real gem in SVG. Good luck.

I am especially excited by this unique phenomenon that I am noticing on REALGM and DBB, where Magic fans keep popping in to tell us congrats and tell us how amazing SVG is or that Detroit just became their backup team. I don't think I've ever seen that happen before, and that gives me a lot of hope haha

Michael Curry? *ducks*
I almost want to keep Smith & Jennings now just so I can hear SVG complain about them in press conferences.

This is the first time in ages i've had any real faith in a move made by the Pistons.
i always approached draft picks/FA/hires with positivity, but it's always a "wait and see" mindset. Hope for the best, but keep expectations relatively low. This move has actually inspired some confidence. It's been a looong time.

Larry Brown
I remember being skeptical about the Carlisle firing too but still many of us knew that he and Big Ben weren't getting along and that Joe had LB waiting in the wings all along. Even though this was long before Twitter, rumors still spread fast on the internet back in 2003.

I was 10 years old when larry brown was hired and wasn't a diehard fan like I am now, this has to be the most excited I've been for a coaching hire.
