In a way though you might be able to get alot more back out of all the capspace then you would out of a sign n trade.

Fine with that.

What happens with the cap space is what really matters.

Edit: is this legit?

would have rather dealt Josh Smith and kept Monroe. I remember people were so excited about the dominance a Drummond/Monroe frontline would be and it just never developed...

Here's the article. It goes on to mention the Lakers, Bobcats, and Pelicans as the top teams interested in Monroe, and says Stan will look to get 3 pt shooters back in a S&T, but that he's also prepared to let him walk for nothing.

Even before the Pistons made the bold move of hiring Stan Van Gundy to be their coach and run their basketball operations on Tuesday, there was a growing consensus around the league that whomever was tabbed to replace Joe Dumars in the front office would be willing to let restricted free agent Greg Monroe go.

Now, with Van Gundy in place on an eyebrow-raising contract—five years, $35 million—there is near certainty among league executives that Monroe has played his last game for Detroit.

The fact that Van Gundy opted for the Pistons over the other team in pursuit of him—the Warriors—offers some insight, one league general manager told Sporting News.

“There are two things that made that job better for Stan,” the GM said. “One is the fact that he gets to make personnel decisions, that is a big deal of course. But the other is Andre Drummond. If you want to build your team around a young player, Drummond is the guy.

"You’re not going to build around both him and Monroe, they had too much trouble making that work. You pick Drummond and move on from Monroe.”

You don't let a 24 year old All Star big walk but if he is going to build this thing like Orlando running everything through Drummond with 4 shooters around him I would be completely fine with that. At the end of the day even as good as Monroe is Drummond is the only thing I care about, he's our only key to greatness again, he is that damn good.

We have a lot of rebuilding to do if that's the plan though. We need a new PG, SF & PF. Plus loads of shooters off the bench. Its going to be like a garage sale in Auburn Hills between now & then.

While I'll be sad if this is true, it probably would be in the best interest of the team simply based on the amount of money that would be tied into Monroe/Smith to play the same position. That said, I'd much rather have Monroe. All I hope for now is that we get a really good S&T for him. If he truly is gone, then I'm all on the Ryan Anderson S&T deal (even though I think Monroe is a lot better player than Anderson).

Oh be clear, Smith would be right behind Monroe on his way out.

If were running the Orlando Dwight system, Josh Smith is the last guy that fits, he is useless from outside 5 feet like many bigs which is obviously a hideous fit right there but factor in the fact that he doesn't know he is worthless outside of 5 feet & thats a nightmare scenario.

Random thought: I know that a lot of people were saying that the Josh Smith Facebook account was fake, but does this give more credence to the fact that it's real? He said he knew who the new coach would be and that he was going to stay with the team next year. So far it's looking as though he will.

Sort of a tough pill to swallow. Moose is a class act, talented, and young.

Yeah, I know that they'd both be gone. And I'm honestly okay with that. I'm just saying that in the meantime I'd rather have Monroe than Smith. Plus then we'd get to see if Monroe and Drummond could work together which we never really got a chance to (Thanks Frank...). At this point I just hope we sign a good SF (Ariza please), Smith plays really good defense with Drummond, and SVG gets Smith and Jennings to take at least a couple less shots a game. Just like 1 or 2 combined would be good...

I think we blew our shot to get something good for Monroe this past season. While he was on his rookie deal we could have flipped him for someone else on their rookie deal or a draft pick and it would have been much easier for a team to absorb his salary. I'm ok with moving on from him, I just want to recoup something of value.

GSW have a $9.8 mil TPE, though I imagine Greg gets a bigger deal than that. I'd love if we could flip him for Barnes w/ GSW using that TPE.

I don't like coming out and saying we won't retain him. Leaving that open could have led to some team vastly overpaying him or helped recoup a return. What can the Lakers give us? Teams like them can just sign Greg to a deal we won't match and then laugh when we ask for something to help with a S&T.

98% of the sports world would take Monroe over Smith, he is the better player. Im with you.

I posted a thread the other day stating in fact just how well the Monroe/Drummond pairing has worked actually, u should check it out, some pretty crazy numbers & figures.

& i'm with you on the hope that dumb & dumber would somehow completely change but its doubtful either are our problem anymore, especially Smith. He doesnt fit that Orlando system at all, our 4 has to be a Ryan Anderson type. Our only paint player would be Drummond.
