Per Wiretap. Interesting. Contradicts the other thread.its mentioned in there, but that title is super misleading.

This article is just as credible as the sources saying SVG didn't like Monroe -- that is to say, not very

But it provides a nice counterbalance to effectively set things back at ground zero in the forums.

Ellis also tweeted this afterwards

Not saying that Monroe won't leave. If a max offer comes it becomes dicey. But #Pistons don't want 6-10, talented big to just walk.

All I know is that going into next season either Josh Smith or Greg Monroe have to be gone. I would try very hard to trade smith if I'm Stan but if nobody will take him moose may have to be let go, I'm a fan of moose but there is only room for 2 starting bigmen on this team.

Bottom line: even if Van Gundy has absolutely no intention of letting Monroe go he'll never indicate as much publicly or even say it aloud to anyone who might leak it. That's why I doubted the original report before.
If other teams know we don't intend to keep him it puts us at a huge disadvantage. Not only do we lose leverage in any kind of trade, but teams will be pursuing Monroe more aggressively with offer sheets thinking there's a good chance we let him walk.
Whether we want to keep him or not, neither of those are good things for us.
I'm skeptical of the original reports that he won't keep him, and I also doubt this means anything other than the desire to hold our actual intentions close to the chest until the time comes.
Who knows.

Vince Ellis doesn't really know anything though and admitted as much in some follow-up tweets

I echo Snakebites logic here.
It would be incredibly stupid to make it known that you dislike one of your players as you are just devaluing your own trade asset. So it really doesn't make any sense for him to say that to anyone.
And while Vince Ellis might not 'know anything' I highly doubt that he fabricated SVG calling Monroe. Why would you do that?

He didn't fabricate it, but he posted it in response to the article that said Monroe was being traded, as if Stan calling Monroe meant he wasn't trading him, when Ellis really didn't know why he called him or what was discussed.

The motto of this forum should be "I don't believe ANYTHING............unless you write it". Anything that's written people take it and run with it without even considering the source or if it makes sense. I never believed the initial report anyway.

No matter what SVG is thinking he will say tomorrow that he hopes we can work things out with Greg this summer... standard protocol.

I think that there is also a possibility to benefit from lower offer sheets if teams don't believe we intend to match. Gives them the idea they don't have to create an absurd offer that we won't match. Clearly there are flaws in that thinking, but a lot of the offseason is about mind games when it comes to free agents, drafting, restricted free agents. All it takes is the right guy to be convinced we won't match to put Monroe on a reasonable contract we would match.
Is there still a chance for Monroe to negotiate exclusively with the Pistons? Or did I miss that window closing already? What are the possibilities Monroe simply re-signs with the Pistons without considering other teams?

I sincerely doubt we keep him. I also sincerely doubt we lose him. That's my contribution. You're welcome.

That's Monroe's choice if he wants to give exclusivity to the Pistons or not. There is no deadline.

This is one of the things I hate about the internet, everyone has a voice. Either way, I'm more likely to believe the guy who covers the Pistons as his beat than the guy based in Boston.
Possible he leaves? Yep. Stays? Yep. Will the Pistons just let him go easily? Nope. Talented bigs, especially those with Monroe's offensive skills are hard to come by.

Reason for acting like we want him when we don't: So teams feel they need to offer us something decent or we'll match.
Reason for acting like we don't want him when we do: So other teams don't feel it necessary to offer a poison pill type contract a la Asik.
I think it's just something we're going to have to let play out.
Personally, I think he'll probably be worth or near-worth his contract. My best guess is we'll keep both and Van Gundy will play Smith in a way that raises his trade value enough that we'll actually have decent options.

You do realize that Lin/Asik contract situation has absolutely nothing with Monroe's? There is no "poison pill" possibility in this instance.
