1st Interview:SVGs vision for building around Drumroe

Post#1 » by vic » Thu May 15, 2014 5:22 pm

You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.

Ear candy!

Important Notes :

Gushed over Drummond and Monroe, talked about needing to make changes in the coming months to acquire shooting to surround them.

Most Important Note: Didn't mention Josh Smudges name once.

Ear candy indeed.

He also talked about having a unified vision between the front office and the coach which is so crucial for success.

This is so funny.
Lawrence Frank had a bunch of excuses for not playing Monro and Drummond together.
Joe Dumars completely missed on the chance to play Drummond and Monroe together surrounded with three shooters.
Mo cheeks nor Loyer did nothing to even try to play Monroe and Drummond together with 3 shooters.

SVG gets hired to replace all of them at once, and his first interview is talking about surrounding Munro and Drummond with three shooters. Something fans have been calling for for only about two years now.

I hope people don't look super deep into this and assume he is building up Monroe's image so he'll he better trade bait, like people said in another thread the other day.

I think this is fantastic news and it appears he is genuinely intrigued with developing both Andre and Greg into a perfect tandem. And if anyone was able to do that, its SVG. I'm taking his words at face value, he's a no-bs type a guy historically.

Also, I don't fail to notice he never mentions Josh's name once. I think that's intentional.

Good to hear, It would be awesome if he could trade Smith. But maybe he will just play him off the bench.

I love the interview, I love hearing him talk about Drummond and Monroe and how we need to get more shooters around them. He didn't talk about smith once and it makes me thing that he might try to move smith in the off season. This is the most excited I've been about the pistons in a long time.

Doug McDermott or Nik Stauskas come on down??

Talks glowingly about Otis Smith and will want to bring him in if Otis wants to come. Puts over Rashard Lewis signing - Umm...

Alright, I listened. For people who don't want to, or can't listen, paraphrased notes as the interview was going on:

What are you going to miss in Orlando?
-Became attached with the community
-Magic fans
-Weather

How big of a deal is it to have personnel decision
-I will hire people on the player personnel side, I will have final say
-Organization coherency++

Will Otis be someone you consider bringing
-Absolutely, if he has interest
-Otis "had tremendous success building a team"

Against tanking for very good draft picks?
-Gores goal: Build for the future but win as much as possible now.
-Wouldn't have went to an organization that endorsed tanking

Any similarities to Orlando and Here
-Obv Andre Drummond, who has a chance to be a mega star in this league
-Also got Greg Monroe who might be a top-10 big men, who's young
-We have great talent. We dont have the similar people around, the shooting, Otis gave me a team with Lewis/ Tug/JJ/Nelson, added Lee/Piertris.
-This roster's weak spot is the shooting, looking to change that over the next few months.

Sounds like Greg and Andre are keepers and everyone is expendable. Finally a coach who understands what most of us have been saying all year. I hope to God SVG is able to flip Smith for a shooter.

He mentioned about talking to Scott Skiles about his dual roles as President and Coach - Hmmm...

Could he have been talking to Skiles about being his lead assistant?

So, he'd like to bring in Otis Smith, if he's interested? Darko was a key piece in the Orlando team before he took the job? Tremendous success in building a team? Uh oh. Because of the Darko mention I feel like he wasn't being serious, but he sounded serious.

But he doesn't plan on trading draft picks for short-term improvement, so that's good.

He like Monroe and plans on adding shooting, good to hear.

Alright, I'm just holding out hope that either we don't hire Smith, because he could be a disaster, but other than that he's saying what I was hoping to hear.

^We have to hope that Otis Smith isn't interested in the gig, because it certainly sounds like SVG will offer it to him. I threw up in my mouth when Stan was talking so glowingly about Otis bringing in Rashard, Rafer and the big loss of freaking Darko...

I mean bloody hell!!

Calling Monroe a Top 10 Big Man had to have been music to Falk's ears. SVG needs to realize that as President of Basketball Operations now his words have greater meaning when it comes to contract negotiations. He's not just a coach fluffing his players anymore or an analyst unconnected to any team...

I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility given I haven't heard Skiles linked to any of the current openings this off-season and Stan could want to bring in an experienced former head coach as his top assistant here given he'll also have to focus on PBO duties and whatever that entails during the season.

You never know with Exec's if they are bullshitting, but Stan is such a loyal type of guy that if he is praising a player, then he is pretty much committed to that player. Stan is an emotional guy too who does become attached to his players. He may look like a screamer on the bench, but once they are off court, he is a players coach who is personally connected to many of them.

Based off this interview, I think Stan is committed to Drummond and Monroe in my opinion of having watched hundreds of Stan game interviews.

I don't really buy this Monroe love, I doubt SVG will pay Greg 60-70 mil to stay here and handcuff the future of the franchise. I won't be surprised if we sign and trade him for some expirings and picks, that actually would be the smart thing to do because we already have a PF locked in a big contract.

The truth is we won't know what his plans are until Monroe is actually signed or traded. So there's as much chance he was just building him up to trade as there is that he genuinely wants to build around him.

Saying we have two top bigs when most teams don't have any could also be code for 'we obviously don't need two if others don't even need one, so all those teams who don't even have one give me a call'.

While Stan has always been straight forward as a coach/analyst, of course as a President he's going to need more of a poker face mentality now if he wants to succeed in the front office, and I'm sure he understands that. When the draft comes up he's not just going to blurt out exactly who he wants a month in advance. So until we actually see what happens with Monroe, this is really just all talk.
