Rumor: Deron Williams wants out of Brooklyn (How about DET?)

What are the odds that Detroit might inquire about a trade? The Pistons could use a smarter point guard, and Brooklyn would probably be happy landing any sort of talent given how dire their draft situation will be for some time. Williams probably wouldn't scoff at the notion of having two talented bigs and some shooters on the wings, not to mention SVG.

So, how about it guys? Does this sound crazy or not so much?

If we could trade Smith and Jennings for him then I'd definitely make the trade. Problem with it, though, is that Deron Williams has been missing a lot of games the past few years. I'd want to make sure we had a very capable backup PG who wouldn't be completely outmatched if he had to start 10-20 games for us.

Van Gundy was able to make a Wade-less team work with Alston at point guard. Wade playing almost exclusively at point guard was pretty unconventional as well. Not because of defensive match-ups, but more so on the offensive side, given the lack of shooting touch.

If Jennings/Smith could be traded for Williams, Detroit consolidates their issues into something far more addressable.

I'd trade anything other than Drummond.

This would be a great move if Stan can get it done. I think he just needs to get back with a disciplined coach like Sloan and we have that now.

Is Arnie Kander being kept around with Van Gundy here?

He'd better be! I'll be very upset if I wake up one day and see that we let Kander go for someone Van Gundy prefers.

Josh Smith - Owed $42M over the next 3 years

Deron Williams - Owed $63M over the next 3 years

That's a tough pill to swallow

Include Jennings and it's virtually a salary wash though. But as was mentioned above, Deron's inability to stay healthy is a major concern as Smith and Jennings can at least stay out on the court and earn some of their contracts. It would be brutal having $21M/season missing huge chunks of games for the next three years - so much so I don't think SVG/Detroit would even consider this.

I would definitely trade Jennings and Smith for him. But hes not the same player he was and his ankles are toast. So dont think your getting him back into best PG in the league type of shape again. With that said hes still better than Jennings and we get rid of two cancers.

That trade kicker makes the deal much harder to swallow. Even if we are rid of Josh Smith.

Deron Williams even at his diminished state will still contribute light years more than Josh Smith & a Brandon Jennings.

Both deals are only for 3 more years.

I would easily make that call.

Can a Monroe S&T be done for a player with a bigger contract coming back, as long as we have capspace to cover it?

I'd take Deron for 3 yrs at 20 mil/yr over Monroe for 4 yrs at 15 mil/yr. The total amount of the contract is the same, and Deron's being a year less actually makes his actually more favorable. Plus we need perimeters more than bigs, so he actually fills a need.

That trade kicker does suck but it's so tempting to completely undo Dumars mess by trading our two biggest problems for a former superstar player that may or may not return to form and also plays a position of need. I would even throw in an asset like Singler to get that deal done.

Please Stan, blow us away with your first front office move

The salary thing becomes tricky with cap holds and what not, but I'd assume that Detroit would still be under the cap if they traded both Smith and Jennings, while re-signing Greg Monroe. Williams is still a star talent, barring how his health might be in the coming seasons.

To his credit, Trader Joe has been beating these drums on the T&T board for awhile, and I've been one of the Piston fans to second him. Yes, Deron Williams is absurdly overpaid and is no longer a franchise player. What he is, however, is a veteran PG who could make life easy for Drummond, Monroe (assuming he's resigned), KCP and whomever we (hopefully!) draft this year. There would be much less pressure on him in Detroit than in Brooklyn, as here he'd be asked to simply facilitate for the bigs and keep defenses honest with his outside shot. And he costs the same amount as Smith & Jennings, so we'd be turning two bad contracts and horrible fits into one horrible contract who could be a perfect fit.

I've even seen versions of this deal posted where the Pistons could get Teletovic back as well, who would just be an insanely perfect fit as the stretch four off our bench. That said, I won't get greedy — count me in for gladly swapping Smith & Jennings for Deron.
