Jerebko's player option. When do we find out?

I think he can opt out any time. Can he?

When do we know for sure that we are stuck with him?

If he opts in, what is the most you would buy him out for? Or would you not buy him out?

Crazy that we could possibly get Kirk Hinrich and Anthony Morrow signed for $4.5 million total and they would be good assets. Or we could just have Poop on the team again. His upside is to be used as a throw-in expiring in a trade for somebody we can actually use.

He'll definitely be back. New coach/regime he'll figure give it one more chance in Detoit while getting paid double+ what anybody else will pay him while playing in a system that needs outside shooters.

We have to hope I guess that he fears Smith playing full time backing up the four and that there will be no minutes for him at all here.

$4.5 million :(

At the very least, he has publicly said that he might opt out. A multi-year deal in a better environment is a sane reason to do so. He sees himself as better than his minutes/game, so that is significant. An extra year in Detroit could be a wasted year in that way, and could damage the rest of his career.

Don't hold your breath.

And there's not much incentive for him to take less on a buyout--it's not like he could join the Heat or Thunder and play a pivotal role down the stretch. Plus I think that buyouts don't matter for the cap, only the original contract figures do. No reason to look forward to one with JJ.

I'm pretty sure that when you buyout a contract half of the original contract price (in this case 2.25mil) counts against the cap until the contract would've expired. So if we bought out Jerebko it'd count against the cap this year as 2.25m and then be gone.

Jerebko won't even get a contract worth $4.5 mil elsewhere. He might as well make that money now cuz nobody is giving him more than $1.5-2 mil per year.

He will be a 4.5mil expiring this year, so he may come in handy at the trade deadline.

He would be crazy to turn down the player option.

He may even be productive in SVG's system. I'm not concerned about it.

Plus, like Clarity illuminated for us- he immediately becomes a valuable trade asset once he accepts his PO.

If we sign Monroe and trade Smith he could be a good fit into the team

No need to wait.

Jerebko will opt-in.

I think its the actual buyout number that counts against the cap.

Bynum/Jerebko/Mitchell/2nd round picks could be a trade package that fetches a useful player.

If we can add one starter/rotation player each from FA, the draft and trade we should be set up to compete for the playoffs.

Sorry. I can't think of any teams that would trade for that. If by useful, I can only think teams that have a player they don't want on a 3 year contract they would also like to unload.

It's an expiring. Expirings don't have the same value they did 5 years ago but we could take back a guy like Corey Brewer or Kevin Martin if Minny decides to blow it up or help facilitate a 3 team deal.

After looking it up, I think Joseph's right but I still can't tell for sure. One FAQ implies that a bought-out player is the same as a waived one (which means you pick up the full tab on the cap), another one implies that a buy-out basically nullifies the old contract altogether. I don't see anything that mentions 50%, Natopher, unless you're referring to the stretch provision which allows you to divide the owed salary of a guy over two+ years of your cap instead of getting the full hit at once.

In any case, JJ probably has no interest in taking a buyout that would cost him big money. Maybe if we bought him out now, we could get something like a $1.5m discount from his deal, but then could we get anyone better than JJ with $1.5m of cap space this summer?

It's very possible I was unintentionally referring to the stretch provision. I just remember when we bought Hamilton out that his contract counted for 2 years at what I thought was half his original salary.
