There seems to be a desire to get rid of smith at any cost. Would anyone be willing to trade a 2016 1st round pick ( and maybe even a second round pick or two ) to unload smith to a team that might not otherwise take him.

From what's said on here he is declining Power forward who cannot be reigned in on offense and his defensive value hasn't bore out in results for the team. In a year or two he will be current Gerald Wallace with a 14 million dollar contract. Is trading a first rounder for him worth the benefit of him leaving and possibly losing a pick

Nope, I personally would like to see what Stan Van Gundy can do with Smith. I still believe he CAN BE a useful piece on this team and I have never been a fan of trading assets for nothing or losing additional assets to get rid of someone.

If I HAD to get rid of one of the big 3, it would be Monroe in a S&T. Ideal situation would be one of them coming off the bench, but who knows if that will really happen.

Also, it's hard to call him a declining power forward when he played primarily SF last year. One of the main reasons his defense and overall game suffered in my opinion.

I would trade him with the 2016 1st round pick if we could get back in this years draft in the deal.

Maybe a heavily protected one. No more sweating the lottery balls. Or next 20th or later pick and Smith for a second rounder and cap space/trade exemption - yeah I'd do it.

NO! I hope everybody in the Pistons front office has learned from past mistakes! Smith can be traded without a 1st round pick included if all you want to do is get him off the team.

I would never trade a first round pick to move a player. I would only trade a first round pick to move up in the draft.

I would bring Smith off the bench before forfeiting a first round pick- they're too valuable to surrender for cap flexibility. Any Pistons fan should be absolutely aware of that now. Only idiot GM's or legitimate title contenders trade picks for short term gains.

No, he'd have to be actively destroying the locker room to make me that desperate.

Trading another 1st rounder to get rid of somebody?

I'm Josh Smith's greatest hater, but not even I advocate going through this nightmare again just to erase another miserable Dumars mistake. I was the harshest critic of the Ben Gordon trade when it was made and now I dislike it even more.

I don't share some of my fellow poster's optimism that SVG will be able to make Smith a decent player, but just the same I'd sooner bench him or buy him out at full price and accept the cap hold than do this again.

Your proposal is poorly timed.

You can never say never, but it would take an absurdly unlikely scenario that offered us MASSIVE return for me to consider it. Something akin to when OKC had to deal James Harden, where a player that good (who could make us a legit title contender when paired with Drummond & Monroe) was suddenly available. Either that or perhaps something like the "first rounder" PHI traded to MIA for Moultire, which has crazy-high protection on it and then converts to two second rounders (i.e. they'll never actually wind up sending MIA a first rounder, as the protection is all but guaranteed to flip it).

In other words, it would have to be a dream scenario that'll never actually happen. So, no.

Just making sure, I wanted to see if people wanted smith gone so bad they'd be willing to get rid of another pick, and I agree with most of the posters opinions that we should ty to see if smith can work in here and if not than trade him but without a pick unless it is heavily protected

Even the last trade had enough protection on it that apologists were able to say "well, it probably won't be a lottery pick by then anyway so we're good".

Unless its lottery protected for the next 10 years or something absurd like that I don't think I'd do it under any circumstance.

Not everyone sees Josh Smith’s contract as an albatross. I don’t think it is necessary to surrender any picks to get rid of him. There are three deals I would consider (at the trade deadline) if nothing else can be done.
1. Josh Smith for Erick Gordon straight up though I don’t care for an injury prone PG with a huge contract and two years remaining which I’d be reluctant to take.
2. Josh Smith for Deron Williams straight up. Another injury prone, somewhat lazy, overpaid PG with three years on his contract which, again, I’d be reluctant to take.
3. Josh Smith and fillers or Brandon Jennings for Amare Stoudemire. A great expiring! Should be top of this list. I think this 3rd option can happen if the Knicks are doing good and Amare should get injured.

I believe SVG can turn him into a better player than he was in ATL.....like Turkoglu without shooting but with stellar lockdown defense

Monroe can traded for Wilson Chandler and JaVale McGee then we'll have a solid big men rotation

No you don't trade a talented player like smith and lose assets.

Well, I don't agree with all of that.

I consider Smith a negative asset who we WOULD have to cough up assets to unload, but we're trying to rebuild here and trading away picks is the worst thing you could do. Yes, worse even than having his contract anchoring our cap down for 4 years.

That's whats great about our current situation (if anything is great about it), we have a lot of flexibility. Smith's contract is big, but it's currently the only big contract we have.

Heck, this team can be completely turned over in 3 seasons without initiating a single trade. What we have, we're not stuck with. Not like when we signed those two turd to 5-year contracts, that locked up this team for half a decade.

Why?

Boston Fans would give us #17 (wallace) for Smith. No reason to give a 1st when he can fetch a 1st.
