Report: Pistons' GM Job is Stu Jackson's "if he wants it"

Per Matt Dery.

If he accepts, I can live with it. I prefer him to Scott Layden or Otis Smith, and he knows his way around (both front offices and the league office).

He's got connections. I like him. I'm trusting SVG's moves.

Now Chauncey needs to be hired as his assistant.

Sounds like he would be a good hire, and everyone was worried that we would sign Otis Smith.

Ill take him over Otis Smith. SVG is gonna be making all the final decisions anyways.

I'd rather have Layden - Smith - Bowers - Pfund - Jackson in that order. And I'd put freaking Isiah Thomas after Bower before Pfund.

People are worried about Jackson's track record as a GM but want Scott Layden?

Stu's resume is less than inspiring.

But, this wouldn't be your regular GM hiring. Whomever is the GM is effectively just Stan's assistant, doing the dirty work and informing him of the important information.

Can you start handing out 24 hour bans for stupid posts?

The massive amount of short term memory that permeates this board never ceases to amaze me. Layden's tenure in New York defined terrible. But since he is currently employed by the Spurs, people automatically hold him in high regard.

Jackson is not at all inspiring either, that guy was pretty bad in Memphis. I sure hope SVG is considering Stu solely based on his loyalty to him, and connection they had in Wisconsin. If SVG is looking at the guys performance in a team's front office and says I want that guy, that would be disturbing....

On a semi side note, I really don't know why a lot of people believe that whomever gets hired as GM is basically only going to be a figurehead. If Stan's primary intention was to have a "yes man" someone already would have been hired. Plus, it certainly doesn't seem like Stan isn't much for the brown nosing phenomenon, either being one or receiving it. Stan seems to be a face value type of a guy.

The fact of the matter is, Stan hasn't ever held team management or personnel powers before. Its pretty unlikely that he is going to approach his role as a dictatorship. Its a pretty good bet he is going to request ideas, opinions, and feedback from his office staff. That being the case, whomever the GM is is going to have a voice to be heard.

From what SVG has said he wants an entire organization that is on the same page...HIS page.

Loyalty and no ego are 2 essential qualities and I'm pretty sure Jackson qualifies.

He'd run the day to day operations but anyone who thinks ANY GM acquires players without input from multiple sources doesn't really understand how things work.

Do people honestly believe Joe Dumars was the only dude in the office that wanted BG, CV, Smith & Jennings.

Having final say doesn't mean the only say. It a team effort on and off the floor

Is it possible that people boosting Layden while turning their noses up at other people for similar reasons are simply unaware of Layden as a central figure in the Knickspocalypse?

Isiah was a disaster, but all he really did was take of a sinking ship and plant some explosives in it. Layden is the man that drilled all the holes in the hull.

GM's are not usually something i pay a whole lot of attention to. Can anybody give me a quick rundown on his resume? Don't actually know who he is.. name sounds familiar though.

He got his start with Pitino. We went on to coach Wisconsin and the knicks. He was the Grizz first GM. Since then, he's been working at the league offices and is currently the executive vice president of basketball operations.

Drafts
95 = Bryant Reeves - "Big Country" - inc due to injuries
96 = Shareef Abdur-Rahim = I'd give that a "B+" - dude put up 18/8 lifetime, but that draft was stacked. Kobe, Nash, Marbury, Allen, Oneal.
97 = Antonio Danielles = "C-" Bad player in a bad draft. McGrady was taken by Toronoto that year though
98 = Mike Bibby = "C" - talent wise it was OK, but Passed on Jamison, Carter, Dirk and Pierce
99 = Steve Francis = "F" - #2 pick in the draft wasted. He forced a trade and they got back essentially nothing

That is a pretty mixed record. Overall, it looks like we leaned toward "best fit" vs "best available", but that might just be hindsight. He's got tons of experience, so I'm sure he's competent to handle the day to day stuff, but I wouldn't want to turn the franchise over to him as a major decision maker.

^To be fair, Vancouver and TO expansion franchises were almost doomed to failure and were given nothing to build with. 6/7th picks and nothing in the expansion drafts. I wonder how Big Country, SAR and others would have turned out if they landed on established teams with better talent surrounding them, and how some of the other names would have fared dropped into the deep waters of the no-talent expansion rosters.

Toronto did do much better though under the same circumstances - say who was their guy building their team at that time - that guy seemed to have a definite eye for talent out of the draft. I wonder what he's up to these days and if Detroit could have a chance to bring him in...
