If Drummond turns into superstar, could we get another star?

I always hear how we would never be able to land a superstar or all-star because we're Detroit. Thing is, the Lions, Tigers and Redwings have no problem getting good players to sign with their teams and they play in Detroit.

Say we sign Monroe to a max contract, Drummond has a all-star season next year and leads us to a 42-47 win season, leads us to a strong playoff series with whoever and then some how we find away to make a few trades to get enough cap space for the next few seaons to sign another star player(s). I know this maybe way to unrealistic but what if Rondo signed in the 2015 off season and Durant signed here in 2016? Not saying those guys would sign here but could we do it? Could we sign a big name FA? (Doesn't have to be those guys btw, just examples.)

Rondo
KCP
Durant
Monroe
Drummond

I think if dre turns into a top 2 center and svg does an amazing job with the core we have,I could see us landing another top 10 player.

If dre turns into a superstar there is no doubt in my mind that other stars would want to team up with him.

Could Detroit lure another star if Drummond blossoms into one? Certainly.

Will that star be Kevin Durant? Unlikely.

30-50% of the teams in the NBA will be clearing cap room to make a run at KD whenever he does become a FA. Even if Dre was a beast, it would be difficult to top the allure of greener pastures and their own stars.

You know, LeBron always want strong bigs in Cleveland so he didn't have to bang down low...

What's Mike Brown doing these days? We need him to court LeBron!

We don't have the war chest of picks to facilitate a trade IMO

Our best chance was probably Knight, Middleton, KCP as a package with cap space & we blew that possibility to get Smith & Jennings

THAT is one of the many reasons Joe should have been let go last off-season

There is no way that we ever get KD

No,

- Pistons don't have assets for a superstar trade
- chance of drafting a superstar in the mid to late first round assuming the Pistons improve is very slim to none
- free agency? yeah good luck with that

Drummond seems like he's pretty popular and friendly with a lot of the stars today. So if he becomes the dominant Center we expect, I don't see why he couldn't get some of his star friends to come play here with him.

I think that's what it ultimately comes down in these things. These guys that team up aren't just superstars, they're friends too, and that seems to be what brings them together more than their talent/production.

Wade/LeBron/Bosh were all friends and wanted to play together. Melo/Lebron are friends and now want to play together. Rondo/Smith/Howard have all talked about playing together for years.

So while you can certainly still recruit stars with money and the opportunity to play with other stars, if Dre became good friends with Durant it would make it happening a lot more realistic.

If Drummond turns out to be a star why not.......
If our front office refinds their credibility, yes......
Don't forget our front office & coaches made a mess of the Pistons organisation.......
Some players included.....

For all the (deserved) heat we give Smith, I do think he's our key to get into the Rondo discussions. If Boston can't get Love and has another bad year, Rondo doesn't sign an extension, SVG proves to be the real deal, Drummond & Monroe continue their trajectory and Smith gets straightened out then I think we've got an excellent chance to add Rondo in FA next year. Those are obviously a lot of "ifs" but sometimes it takes a lot of things aligning to add an elite talent.

I really think that played a part in Dumars thinking when signing Smith. It probably wasn't coincidence that Rondo rumors suddenly started up right they signed him. Joe probably thought by signing Smith it would give him a better chance to get Rondo. He even said in the press conference that he wanted that signing to lead to other top FAs coming here in the future.

You see it with other teams, acuiring players who friends of a star in hopes that it might lure that star there. I think that's what Joe was doing with Smith.

Its still possible we get Rondo here too. Maybe not in a trade this year, but he will be a FA next summer and having Smith to help recruit would greatly increase our chances.

I'm fine with making runs at RFA's like Parsons, Hayward or Bledsoe as they are young enough to fit long term with Drummond & Monroe and would be like adding a lottery pick. Absent one of them, I really think our best play is renting our cap space to accumulate assets and maintaining maximum flexibility to make a run at Rondo in the summer of 2015. Pick up draft picks/young players to help teams like Houston & Miami make their summer star runs, let KCP play heavy minutes, try to showcase Jennings and make our move in summer 2015.

Dre is said to have Shaq's touch around the rim. After seeing the highlight reels on the other thread, I see Drummond having his biggest season next year under SVG. I do believe that we can land another Star. I think SVG is a great coach and to be able to have him and Dre on the team, that's enough attraction to bring in a Top 20 player.

To add to this,Thats another reason I love the svg hire, hes the type of coach that not only knows his Xs/Os but he forms great realionships with his players and has them play as a team and family.Hes similar to pop in that why,he gets the most out of them not only from a profesional standpoint but also a personal one.

If Drummond stays loyal to Detroit and is the best big man in the league, of course he'll have some effect on free agents. Kevin Durant? I doubt that. But some of the lesser stars, sure.

I believe Joe signed Smith hoping that Boston would take some combination of KCP, Singler, Middleton, Knight, Bynum, Monroe, Jerebko etc in a trade for Rondo

Boston said no...so Joe moved on with Jennings cause he was desperate to save his job...

It failed big time and hurt us long term
