OT - Introducing your Grand Rapids...

Post#1 » by dVs33 » Wed Jun 18, 2014 12:46 am

DRIVE!!!

http://www.detroitbadboys.com/2014/6/17 ... me-and-its

Personally i like that best out of the final 4 options, but i still think Growlers would have been the best.

Will anyone go and check them out?? Does anyone care??

Pistons should use 15th roster spot to lure better non-rostered free agents to the Drive. Promise each player two 10-day contracts stints with the Pistons as the 15th man, getting them whatever pay that would entail (I assume 20 days worth of rookie minimum), and a chance to live the NBA life and get their families and friends to see them play maybe.

Drive is definitely the best of the names.

I'd go see them, but going grand rapids is quite the drive.

Chairmen would have been fairly amusing.

Nobody would want to play for that team though. Wonder how that name even slipped into the finalist list.

SVG mentioned the D-league team in an interview the other day. I'm intrigued to see how it's used in the NBA, especially being so close.

If i go out to Grand Rapids for other reasons and they have a home game, then yes. i won't be driving out there just to see them play. They should be talking to MSU, UM, EMU, CMU, WMU, etc alums to find some players. Manny Harris does pretty crazy at this level. They should try to sign him.

I dug the Chairmen name - thought it was unique and would have had folks asking for an explanation/story behind it and thus would have successfully promoted the furniture building industry.

I like The Drive though as it has auto connection, basketball connection (drive the basket) and even psychological - drive ie passion, ambition, motivation, which fits the developmental players playing for pennies still not giving up on their dreams.

Thank God I don't have to drive down there to run for errands anymore, such a long and painful drive to that place. Good city though, and I kind of dig the name now. I hated the other ones before.

Figured this would be appropriate for this thread. Gives some knowledge on the D league and single-team affiliations.

http://www.sbnation.com/nba/2013/8/8/4601398/nba-dleague-expansion-minor-league

Specifically this:

There's still a lot of space between today's D-League and a true minor league. First of all, while teams can assign roster players to their affiliate, they don't hold rights on other players they add to those teams.

That was unknown to me. Perhaps not for everyone though. So basically, aside from having the organization in charge of the staff in GR, the players there could be picked up by any other NBA team unless they are part of our 15 man roster. In some ways, that kind of defeats the purpose in my opinion. Sure, SVG can send someone down and instruct the coaching staff to start, and play that player big minutes while there, but aside from that, the structure doesn't mirror a minor league at all unfortunately.

Yeah this was brought up in another thread.

It seems silly, but since some teams share a d league team, i think it'll take some time before they develop it into a true minor league which it should be.
Hopefully that'll happen soon.

They play at the Deltaplex, huh? That would not have been my first guess.

Given that I currently live in GR, I may make it to a game or two but will be hard pressed to pass over a Griffins game in favor of this (if you haven't been to a Griffins game, you really should. They are fantastic)

The Drive are hosting an open house tonight at the Deltaplex for us GR residents. It's totally free. There's supposed to be a dunking contest, members of the Pistons organization and stuff. I'm going to be there and I'll provide an update later if anyone is interested.
