Could we deal with Houston?

A deal that saves them $$$ so they could make a serious run at LeBron or Carmelo:

Monroe/Jennings

for

Parsons (extended), Jones, Lin

They become:

Jennings / Beverly
Harden
*FA*
Monroe / Montejunas
DWIGHT

We become:

Lin / Dinwiddie
KCP
Parsons
Smith / Jones
Drummond

Houston did say they had a trade partner already lined up to move Lin if Melo or god forbid Lebron decides to check them out.

I really hope we're one of those teams.

I fail to see how that deal saves Houston cap space considering the Monroe situation.

Saves them cap space for THIS offseason.

Yes, they will eventually have to extend him after this year.....but Houston wants their cap # reduced for THIS offseason.

Ha... no, that isn't how it works.

We need to wait until Lebron and Melo decide against going to Houston for them to be desperate enough to deal with us

I think we could maybe manage to do a Smith for Lin deal straight up but I dont know if Houston would be willing to pay an extra 5.5-6M to pair Dwight with his buddy

You're assuming Monroe takes the qualifying offer, which no team has any power over. The logic behind this trade is completely flawed.

Okay, quick cap run-down:

Monroe is currently a RFA--not next offseason but this one--so he needs a new deal before being traded. That deal could be the QO but there's no chance he signs that when he could easily get something like 4/45 minimum right now on the market. So you're looking at a minimum of $11-12m for him in this deal. Jennings is on the hook for a flat $8m, so that's $20m together.

Lin counts as $8.3m and Jones is $1.6m, so $9.9m. Parsons is RFA, and the only way the Rockets save any money is if he signs for less than $10m this year. If he signs for 4/40--which seems a conservative estimate--then the Rockets don't save any money, since they have about $20m coming in and $20m going out. (Also the Rockets had an option for Parsons at around $1m which they declined so they could resign him. They're not going to trade him when they could have retained him for almost nothing.)

If broken down into two parts (a S&T and another swap) the trade could work in theory, but it would only work in real life if the Rockets preferred a well-paid Monroe to a well-paid Parsons, plus two years of Jennings to an expiring Lin and a dirt-cheap Jones. I don't think that's likely, especially since Monroe's deficiencies (defense, spacing) are precisely what they need to improve and his strengths (post play, shot creation, passing) duplicate their current big-money guys.

OK, let's simplify it then.

1) Houston already has a taker for Lin if LeBron or Melo say they will come on board. If this happens, they either renounce Parsons or S&T him for a non-SF and make the move to add LeBron or Melo.

2) We sign Parsons outright

or

3) We S&T them Monroe for Parsons/Jones

They become:

Beverly
Harden
**FA**
Monroe
Dwight

we become:

Jennings
KCP
Parsons
Smith/Jones
Drummond

Renouncing a good player like Parsons or moving him in a S&T makes no sense. His cap hold this summer is only $1.7 million. Houston can find the space to sign a big free agent without letting Parsons go. Then use Parsons Bird rights to go over the cap and sign him.

I want to do this deal just for the backcourt nickname Linwiddie

Signing a big FA SF to a max deal like Melo/James, and then going over the cap to give Parsons another big contract just to come off the bench as his backup makes no sense either though.

Parsons could start alongside Melo or James.

If Anthony goes to Houston he's playing power forward. That's where New York has used him for the most part over the last couple of seasons and the Rockets want a guy who can stretch the floor next to Howard. The only way I see Parsons in a different uniform is if James signs there. There was a Windhorst report during the finals (I think) saying that LeBron doesn't like playing power forward or guarding that position for the majority of the game. Parsons probably isn't a good full-time fit there either.

Anthony only played PF in NY temporarily because of injuries or when they chose to go small for matchup advantages.

I can't see him agreeing to sign with Houston, knowing going in that he has to be a full-time PF. Players of his age understand the wear that puts on them and how it would shorten his career. It may seem easier on offense getting to just camp out for 3's, but with that comes lots of banging in the paint on defense as a post defender against bigger true PFs as well as fighting them for rebounds. Its one of the reasons LeBron doesn't like to do it.

I could see Melo doing it if that's what it took to play with LeBron, but him changing positions to put more wear on his body just to play with Chandler Parsons, I'm not sure about that.

Knowing how Melo is, he's not likely to give up his position for Parsons anymore than Rip was willing to move to SF to accomodate AI/Gordon. Guys don't like changing positions that are going to add wear to their bodies that late in their careers unless the reward outweighs the risk like it would playing with LeBron. And Melo being the diva that he is probably isn't any different.

If Houston somehow got Melo and James, there would be no place for Parsons at all.
