Re: Team must gone keep billups
Isn't tomorrow the deadline to decline it, or it becomes fully guaranteed?
Heck, maybe SVG has a deal lined up tomorrow and wants to use Billups' salary? Or, maybe Billups is healthy enough to convince them to keep him on?
We'll know by Tuesday, I suppose.

Re: Team must gone keep billups
Maybe they're going to give him up until the very deadline to retire and thus go out on his own terms. Or they're holding out for compensation from Minnesota if Saunders really wants him as an assistant there. I dunno.

Re: Team must gone keep billups
Another important factor to consider- Detroit doesn't have to terminate the contract if Billups decides to retire.
They don't have to look like a bad guy by any fans, and Billups can pursue whatever goal he desires.

Waiting to see if Billups is going to retire would be a bad move for the team if he's not in their on-court plans for next season. Especially if they're going to go after free agents aggressively like Van GUndy mentioned. Any extra cap space is an asset. The league deadline is tomorrow so there's still time. Some players had different times specifically mentioned in their contract but as far as I can tell that's not the case with Billups.
Any money paid to a player is included in team salary, even if the player is no longer playing or has retired.

Decline and move him into a scouting department or player development.
He's done as far as I'm concerned, the legend is done.

Re: Team must gone keep billups
Would be a good decision to decline the option and give him a role in the front office.
He's got nothing left to give on the floor except the opportunity for the Pistons twitter account to pull the "Chauncey for 3! #TweetsFrom2004and2014" gimmick.

Re: Team must gone keep billups
I can't find any reports stating Detroit declined his option. It could still go public later today, but I'm wondering why in the heck they wouldn't decline his option? He was done last year. He looked good in the first game against Washington, and that was it. After that, he either looked slow and tired or was injured and out of the line-up.

Billups is done. I hope he retires with dignity, instead of trying to limp through another season.
Retire or be declined.

I'm pretty sure retired player's contracts come off cap space. Seems like I've read numerous teams about teams encouraging X or Y player to retire so they can clear him from the books. Steve Nash was the most recent example. Maybe it just takes some time to disappear?

As I understand it if a player retires the team doesn't pay him anymore (obviously) but his contract still counts against the salary cap. It's dumb but I'm pretty sure that's how it works and Coon's cap FAQ seems to confirm it.

Just checked; if a player retires for medical reasons, then he can be cleared from the books in a year. Billups would probably qualify--he can't really play at a high level now with his body where it's at--but if he retired today we'd only be eligible for cap relief a year from today.
In other words, retiring doesn't do us any good and we need to turn down his option.
