Per Woj.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I'm a little shocked he was able to get that much. I figured he would be a league minimum guy until he washed out in a few years.

Makes the Meeks deal look good.

I wish I was in the nba, I'm sure I could alteast score 1 point a game which should easily give me a 2 million dollar contract lol. Seriously tho how does this guy get paid, we gave away our 1st round pick just to get rid of him, he played like crap on the bobcats and they paid just to get rid of him and somehow he still makes 9 million!

i might be in the minority here, but i'm happy for BG. dude can flat out ball. i'm sure he's still got plenty left in the tank. it's not his fault we never put him in a position to succeed (the dumars special). it's also not his fault joe gave him that ridiculous contract to come off the bench.

We could be about to offer Gordon Hayward the max like the Cavs might

I was thinking the same thing... Even if BG was in a "Bad situation" in Detroit, he did nothing in his time with Charlotte to merit more than a vets minimum look from teams.

It's funny how Orlando seems to like washed up Pistons like BG and Maxeill and have been rumored to be interested in Stuckey. Is there anyone one on the current roster the Pistons can off to the Magic?
After waiving Jameer Nelson, who is going to be their starting PG?... Would W. Bynum work? BG at $4.5/per makes Will's contract look good.

i don't think either side (charlotte and BG) wanted to be paired with the other. it was a pretty toxic relationship from the start; the trade was entirely about the pick. if you ask me, he was never going to get a legitimate shot to do anything in charlotte. i don't believe that the guy just lost his ability to be one of the most explosive scorers in the league overnight.

that being said, it is a little shocking to see him command such a salary after his snoozefest of a season. hopefully he gets some opportunities to light up the scoreboard again with dipo and payton slowly coming along.

Anytime you can pay two guys who play no defense whatsoever a combined ~$35 mil a year you've gotta do it.

So far we gave Meeks 3/$19M, Orlando gave Ben Gordon 2/$9M, and now Woj is reporting the Celts are giving Avery Bradley 4/$32. Combine that with the rumored Cavs' max-offer to Hayward, and I think one thing is clear — these aren't necessarily "overpays," the agents are hammering the point of the cap going up and salaries being pro-actively adjusted accordingly (and if you won't play ball, there'll be another GM who will). It's like going to the grocery store and prices have unilaterally gone up by 10%; we didn't pay too much for our food, we were just the first team who went through the check out line.

P.S. — Following this trend and assuming Hayward gets a max contract, I think it's all but a mortal lock that Monroe and Bledsoe get max deals, too.

Great analogy. I agree - I think prices have gone up. Meeks fills a weak spot for us, and I think at a fair price. It will be interesting if the market continues with these high prices. Looks like Stephenson thinks they will be higher too.

It's tough for me to believe that such an "explosive scorer" would show that poorly in the opportunities he was given in a contract year.

Unless you're a title contender shopping for players who have already banked a lot of money or you're a premium market, you're going to overpay for free agents.

That's life.

In that context I don't think this deal is that bad. A bit of a gamble, probably a slight overpay, but IMO its the best we can hope for being the Detroit Pistons, a team with neither championship aspirations nor an appealing market.

it's very hard to find a "bad" 2-year contract. orlando needed a little scoring punch in their backcourt, and gordon gives them that. also, dipo and payton will allow BG to guard the PG on the other team, so hopefully, for whose sake, i don't really know/care, this is a situation that he can make the most of.

What I don't understand is they just traded away Afflalo and now they sign BG? Makes no sense at all.
