Zach Lowe: Monroe wants Smith traded or he's gone

Reading between the lines, a sign-and-trade involving Thomas and Josh Smith may be in the works, and multiple sources say Monroe’s camp has made it known Monroe will sign the one-year qualifying offer if Smith remains on the roster. Monroe’s camp denies that, and that kind of empty threat is not atypical from top restricted free agents. It’s really their only form of leverage.

Not surprising if its come to that. Monroe's camp have every reason to deny it, especially if they both end up playing together next season.

It's going to be very interesting to see what happens, I think its pretty much guaranteed that one of them is going to be traded soon.

The majority of the board here wants Smith gone anyway, save for the one guy.

I imagine it would be easier for us to trade Monroe to whoever we wanted if he opted in on the QO vs being forced to S&T with the team of Monroe's choosing.
I'd be pretty surprised if this is legit. That's walking from a lot of money.

See ya Monroe. If he really is pulling this stunt, than Stan needs to trade his ass - Stan was given all his power for just this situation, now use it.
Double dog dare Monroe to sign QO and then play him 48 minutes a game and when he whines about possibly getting injured than bench his ass for the rest of the season.
He made is less likely Smith is traded in a way, because if Stan was working on something and pulls the trigger on it now it will look like he was following demands from Monroe.
So with this crap, even if Smith is moved Monroe should be traded as well. It can't be tolerated.

Monroe is full within his right to take the QO.

Or there's already a Smith deal in place for one of Thomas + filler and this only expedites the process. And last I heard, there were a lot of positive feedback for that move to happen. I'm more surprised Monroe hasn't flown across the country by now looking to sign a offer sheet and SVG likely told him to wait out of loyalty.
This really doesn't mean much in the broader spectrum.

I doubt that hes ever publicly said anything like that. But with that said we are all thinking it. Smith is a god awful cancer that needs moved.

The chance of monroe taking a qualifying offer are about 0%. He's going to get his money from somewhere. He might well want smith gone, but he's not going to gamble $60+ million on that point.

Lol what a gamble taking the QO would be when you're going to be making like 13-15M/5years anyways... Even if Smith is on the roster, Monroe would still be collecting his cash. Pretty weird rumor.
Still excited to see what moves happen, I'm now hoping both PFs get moved.

Terrible. Whether it's true or not, this sucks.
Having stuff like that out in the public isn't going to make Detroit's job of trading Smith any easier when teams know the Pistons are having Monroe leveraged against them.

I'm surprised to see people reacting negatively to this.
Signing Smith when we had Drummond/Monroe was clear moronic stupidity. This solves all of our problems.
Support this 1000% percent.
Either we figure out a way to get rid of Smith (preferred) or we lose Monroe (ie - we trade him).
Either way we get out from under Dumars' stupidity.

I have always been and remain in the camp of trading them both. Smith is just too stupid to play smart basketball on a consistent basis, and Monroe doesn't fit (defensively) with the only player that matters.

Monroe will never take the QO if the Max is offered by anybody. Pure garbage. The only way he takes the QO is if nobody offers him 12+, which somebody most definitely will.
