Raptors Fan Here.

Post#1 » by stanley14 » Wed Jul 2, 2014 8:26 pm

Would you guys accept this?

To TOR: Luc Mbah Moute + Ronnie Turiaf

To MIN: Tyler Hansbrough + Luigi Datome + Will Bynum

To DET: Steve Novak + Rights to DeAndre Daniels, and a 2015 2nd Round Pick from Toronto.

It just feels like Van Gundy's so desperate to get shooting after the Meeks deal that he would accept this pretty easily.

I wouldn't make that trade. Although I want Bynum gone and don't care for Datome, I don't think Van Gundy would wanna owe 7mil/2yr to Novak.

Nevermind. Had no clue Novak was getting paid that much.

Huh?

This is pretty flawed logic. He was "desperate" for shooting so he signed Meeks (on a deal that's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be). He got some shooting, which would decrease the desperation.

"Desperate" for shooters is a bit inaccurate.

With the way the Spurs won on shooting this year, there's going to be a huge boon in demand for sharpshooters and they're not going to be cheap to come by. Contrary to popular belief, 3nD guys are no longer so easily obtained without their price tag getting in the way.

Yesterday's signing and today's signings from other teams proved that. It is no longer true.

So, no, I wouldn't do that trade. Novak is a sniper but that's really about it. He doesn't give you defense nor any thing much else.

I don't consider this trolling at all. And as previously mentioned, I doubt Datome and Bynum are going to have much influence on this year's team. But I don't want us taking on cap space unless we are getting a real asset. 2nd round picks are not worth much. And Novak? I think we can do better with our cap space.

Not even close to trolling, the deal has a solid justification. We take on another year of not-great contracts--swapping out a great shooter who sucks at everything else for a shoot first PG. And we get DeAndre Daniels and a 2nd for doing so. I'm not huge on Daniels, and we already have a much cheaper stretch big (Jorts) so I wouldn't pull the trigger. But it's a reasonable offer.

Only if SVG thinks Novak can play the stretch 4.

Two years ago he shot 47.2% from three on 5.2 attempts per game.

43.2% for his career.

Novak > Datome

DeAndre Daniels is a good project, too. I'd probably end up doing it just to get Will Bynum the hell out of here but it would be after free agency has ended.

The trade isn't bad at all, but it's the justification of "Your GM overpaid so ridiculously on Meeks that he's desperate enough to take this bad offer too..." is the baited line.

Thought experiment - how would I greeted on the Toronto board if I opened with "Lowry leaving once again proves that no American UFA will ever sign in Toronto so Masai should be desperate enough to trade for Jennings because he's signed for a few more years yet so is captive for Toronto and their only hope to use cap space".

I kind of like DeAndre Daniels. I can see where Novak fits for SVG, but he's paid too much for bringing so little.

nope. trading bynum and datome for a TERRIBLE contract and two second round picks? as much as we need to get rid of bynum, we should be able to do better than that.
hell, i dont think minnesota would do that either.

Yeah why not.

Steve Novak isnt a "terrible contract". It's 3.5 million... It might be overpaying but it's still nothing. There's been talk of us acquiring Jameer on a fairly cheap deal, so if that's true we'd have no use for Bynum. And Datome hasn't proven that he can even be a rotation player in this league. In exchange for those two, we pick up a guy who atleast has a proven situational niche and a few small assets.

Absolutely. Novak could at least get some burn as a stretch big, Daniels at least has potential even if I'm not high on him, and I'd love an extra pick, even just a second rounder. $3.5 million is not really a big deal on next year's cap sheet. We'd still have plenty of room.
