Pistons Not Signing Cartier Martin & Aaron Gray until...

Post#1 » by GreekAlex » Thu Jul 10, 2014 11:41 pm

Reading on Freep.com that the Pistons were not going to sign Martin & Gray until after other transactions happened (ie Monroe situation resolved, other potential FA targets signed) made me feel better about signing them.

I was concerned that committing to them early would prevent further flexibility but SVG said he has them waiting until the bigger issues are figured out.

My only other hope being they were both rumored to get multi year deals it that the second year is a team option for more flexibility.

I think that's smart and fair. This way SVG can use whatever cap space there is left to sign someone significant after Monroe. After that, we can still sign Martin and Gray with the minimum contracts. It's just the way business works.

Shhhhhhh......don't say anything. This goes against the utter pissing and moaning that went on in here when the team agreed to terms with these guys not knowing that it was setup this way.

Yes, that's what I was hoping for... I just didn't realize it was actually the case.

It seems like there should be some decent FA's available after teams spend on the big names and it's good to know it's still possible to sign someone above vet minimum guys.

Note that NO ONE speculated that Pat Riley was cutting into his available cap space to sign McBob and Granger (coincidentally, to deals of the EXACT amounts of the exceptions), yet plenty of people here were paranoid that SVG had actually used our cap space on veteran minimum players rather than using the same sensible (and obvious) waiting strategy ...

Stan Van and Bowers better have something close regarding that $8M because as soon as Moose signs an offer sheet somewhere he'll have three days and then have to match, and that $8M shrinks down to $3.5M as Moose's cap hold of $10M becomes a cap hit of $15M.

Yes but we knew exactly which exceptions the Heat were using. This is the first I've heard of Vet minimum players committing to the minimum without exploring other options. Beside with the Big 3's cap holds still on the books I don't think too many Heat fans were worried about cap space as they knew Riley would have to be creative.

If Lebron & Bosh bolt from Miami... can you see Riley offering Moose a max deal?

Phew! Great move by SVG. Gotta make sure we lock up our major free agent target Anthony Tolliver before we sign those other two studs.

I think Moose's max offer will come from the Lakers.

If we have any free agent prospects outside of matching Monroe, SVG is doing a REMARKABLE job keeping them quiet.

^Maybe we're the Houston/Lin mystery team - because you're right we haven't been linked to any other free agents worth the 8M price range, and it would be in said players best interest to have that sort of thing leaked by their agent to try and create a bidding war for their client. But if we had a trade ready to be made, only the other team would have to know and Stan and Co could make the deal contingent on it being kept under wraps until it happens.

Phillys who I've been hearing all along... I've also read Morey of Hou and Heinkie of Phi are super close.

The Morey-Hinkie connection is why I think folks just assume it would be Philly. Probably is, but I wouldn't bet the house on it either.

Interesting.... I wonder if Philly wants Lin or Just the 1st round pick? If it's just the pick they want I would love to do something like:

Det:
In: J. Lin (8.4 M cap hit but $14.9 Salary)
Out: J. Jerebko, W. Bynum, L. Datome (9.2 M)

This gives Philly the same 1st round pick but saves them just under 6 M in salary.

Hou:
In: future 2nd round pick (Phi)
Out: J. Lin, 1st round pick

Philly:
In: J. Jerebko, W. Bynum, L. Datome (9.2 M) + 1st round pick (Hou)
Out: Future 2nd round pick (Phi)

It feels pretty good to start this "In Stan I Trust" quote going on. I don't know who said it before and I don't care. But it's clicking!

I think Moose's max offer will come from the Lakers.

I think the Lakers are going to maintain room for Love and then Durant. They've gotta see that the Kobe contract basically eliminated any realistic chance at Lebron and/or Melo. This isn't going to be the last summer like this and a team that can land the big fish isn't going to lock up long term room on a guy like Monroe.

I think the team most likely to give Monroe an offer is the loser of the Cavs/Heat in the Lebron sweepstakes.
