Thought this deserved a new thread. According to Jeff Zillgitt at USA Today, Monroe has informed the Pistons that he will accept the QO and become a unrestricted free agent next year.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nb ... /12940893/Forward-center Greg Monroe has informed the Detroit Pistons' he will accept the qualifying offer, play for Detroit in 2014-15 and become an unrestricted free agent next summer, two people familiar with Monroe's plan told USA TODAY Sports.
The people requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about Monroe's decision.
Monroe, 24, was a restricted free agent this summer but decided not to sign an offer sheet with another team or sign a multiyear extension with the Pistons.
He instead will be one of the most highly sought-after free agents next offseason.
The article goes on to note, that as others have mentioned, by signing the QO he cannot be traded without his consent.

Good. About time he finally made a decision.

Well the wise thing to do we be to use Monroe off the bench and start Smith. If he isn't happy coming off the bench then maybe he will be willing to accept a trade.
Does this free up any capspace for us?

Jennings/Augustin
Caldwell-Pope/Meeks
Butler/Singler
Smith/Monroe
Drummond/Monroe
We are pretty deep, well balanced, and have a great coach. I think if we make the playoffs and have a great season with Monroe being a major part of it he will resign with us.

It frees up a small amount of cap space. 4-5 million.
Good luck to Moose getting a big pay day after a 7/4 season coming off the bench.

It does free up a bit under $5 million if true. Although with 16 guaranteed contracts I'm not sure how likely it is the Pistons actually use it. Maybe as some leeway in a trade.

Yup, enjoy chasing that 6th man of the year honor, because you're coming off the bench now Moose.

This has got to be the gutsiest move I have ever seen a player make. As a fan, I'm not happy about it, but you have to respect the dude for putting everything on the line.

The article posted in the other thread said that Monroe likes SVG but wants "proof of SVG's vision." I don't think this is just about money. I think he wants to see if SVG knows what he's doing before signing long term here.

Too bad he never did that on the court.

There wasn't a real market for him this season, and I doubt there'll be one for him next season if his jumper is still broken.

You think he's going to like the view more when his minutes are cut and he's no longer a starter? This team won't trade Josh to free up room for a disgruntled Monroe. If he wanted to try out SVG's vision, he should have signed a 2 year deal. He's out the door.

**** him, He's not going to resign here regardless and I would not let him take away minutes from other players just so he can showcase himself for other teams this season. I would seriously give the SOB the CV treatment next season.

This is just monumentally stupid on his part. There's only one possible reason to do this -- he really doesn't want to be here. Sad.
I'll get over it, though. This is a way better outcome for the Pistons than signing him for 4/58 and finding out he's untradable on that contract, ala Josh Smith.
Sucks to lose talent for next-to-nothing, but we'll be fine.

Lets not act like Monroe is some sort of pioneer. Ben Gordon played this card years ago, and at the time he was a better player than Monroe is now.

Well I think fans are overreacting right now because they are just upset that Monroe did this. Everyone is just assuming Monroe is gonna be in the dog house now but SVG is smarter than that. He will use Monroe in a way that best helps this team win and if that means starting him I'm sure he will start. I personally think he we would be best off the bench though considering that he can play both PF and C. Our bench looks great with him coming off it though. He will now be surrounded by excellent shooters like Augustin, Meeks, and Singler.

At least were not stuck over paying another PF though.

I think that's a load of bull from Monroe - hoping he can sell that crap in hopes he isn't treated as a pariah by the fans, teammates and coaching staff for pulling this. "Hey guys, I really like you guys and it's nothing to do with the city - I just want to see how Stan is, so if he starts me and plays me big minutes and caters to me offensively, well then maybe, just maybe I'll comeback here still okay".
