Does your management do this trade?

Post#1 » by OBisHalJordan » Thu Sep 4, 2014 5:17 pm

Hi Piston fans, I'm a making this thread to see if you think SVG and the rest of your management would trade Monroe to clear out Smith and balance your roster. What do you think of the following trade:

Smith, Monroe, Jerekbo, and Bynum for Jared Sullinger, Marcus Thorton, Gerald Wallace, Brandon Brass, Vitor Faverani, Clippers 2015 first rounder, and two 2nd rounders from the 76ers

Detroit's rotation looks like

PG: Jennings, Augustin
SG: Thorton, Cladwell-Pope, Meeks
SF: Singler, Martin, Wallace, Datome
PF: Sullinger, Bass, Mitchell
C: Drummond, Faverani, Gray

Compared to Smith, Wallace's contract saves Detroit one year and about $7 or 8 million. Sullinger gives you a nice young PF to pair with Drummond going forward, Thorton instantly becomes your starting SG, and Faverani and Bass give some nice big man depth. The two picks are sweeteners. Boston also has about $7 million of unguaranteed contracts to throw in work our the right salary for Monroe.

Boston's rotation looks like

PG: Rondo, Bynum, Pressey
SG: Bradley, Smart
SF: Green, Turner,
PF: Smith, Olynyk, Jerebko
C: Monroe, Zeller

I figure this move would balance out both teams rosters. Do you like it? Do you think it could happen?

So we trade Smith and Monroe for Sullinger and Gerald Wallace's contract?

No. I don't think SVG would have any interest in that at all. He's shown no interest in just dumping smith, let alone tossing monroe in there too.

If monroe doesn't resign here, we won't be taking back a bunch of scraps in a sign-and-trade. We can just let him walk and have a big chunk of cap space. We won't be taking back a bunch of salary just to get a couple bad picks.

Green instead of Wallace makes this very good for us value-wise.

I'm personally not a huge fan of this because I'm concerned about Sully's long term health. He's a good player, and normally I'd consider him very good return for Monroe, but I'm sort of worried that he's not going to stay healthy.

Not a bad idea OP, usually when people have us dump both of our PFs we get a garbage player in return to fill their place. Sully and Bass is not a terrible combination.

We don't really need Thornton though, unless he's just in the deal to make the salaries match. He's not a stud outside shooter, and Meeks/KCP is a solid pair, we're all high on KCP's potential as a 3+D hustle guy.

With Green instead of Wallace this becomes a very good deal- we dump Smith for a solid SF who can shoot it a bit, we turn Monroe into a somewhat risky PF with a good scoring game, swap some garbage and get a few picks out of it too.

With Wallace it's likely no from the fans, with Green though this deal should be a yes.

Some fans might, but I don't think SVG would. He seems pretty intent on bringing in "his" guys. I can't see him wanting to trade for half the celtics roster.

I personally would have to start at Sullinger. I wouldn't touch him. I'd rather have the Klynyk. I think if we're trading them for (Mostly) picks, then we would probably want something like "the higher of x picks" and maybe an "option to switch picks" later down the line. I could do without extra second rounders and the very expensive second rounder (clippers pick). I don't care about Jeff Green. Wallace adds negative value. Monroe and Smith are both valuable at their natural positions (5 and 4 respectively.) Van Gundy loves Jerebko from all accounts. He might like Bass, Farv, or Thorton, but I don't see them as adding value.

Not giving up both of our PFs for Sullinger. I believe smith will have a better year and I KNOW svg will never do this trade or anything similar. Trading both our bigs isn't a smart thing to do.

No, But maybe Ainge gets desperate to keep Rondo around by trading for his good buddy J Smoove.

If the pistons management goes for this deal, we need new management.

We give up the two best pieces in the deal for a horrible contract, a high 1st, a couple low seconds, and a promising injury risk.

What about this version of trade: Boston trades Kelly Olynyk, Brandon Bass, Jeff Green, and James Young for Smith, Monroe and Singler. Picks to be negotiated

Brandon Bass starts for a year as PF but Olynyk is the stretch four to partner with Drummond long term. Jeff Green becomes your starting small forward, who, unlike Smith, can make 3s a good rate. Young gives you a swingman prospect to develop with KO and Drummond. Thorton could also be had as well because he is sort of the odd man out in Boston with Rondo, Bradley and Smart.

I figure something got to give in Detroit. Drummond is untouchable. I get that but I don't see how he works with either Monroe or Smith. From what I've read, Monroe wants out and wants to play center. Boston and Detroit both have unbalanced roster's that, if reworked, could turn both push both teams toward the playoffs. This trade isn't perfect for either team but no trade is. It looks like both teams are going to loose huge assets (Monroe and Rondo) to free agency next year unless some moves are made. I think they might be good trade partners.

You really like the idea of a Smith+Monroe frontcourt with Rondo, huh?

Again, not a bad deal, if KO's legit then he should be a good partner with Drummond, James Young is a local boy so we'd love to have him and he can replace Green after his deal expires. I'd hate to lose Singler because I like him a lot as a backup SF, but you give us replacements easily. Bass sucks but we'll need the big man depth after moving both Monroe and Smith.

We'll have to send another scrub your way since we don't have the roster space, so we'll send you Bynum or Datome.

A Rondo/Monroe swap with scraps added to make it "fair" is all I'd be interested in if I was SVG.

Boston would then have Sullinger, Monroe & KO at PF/C and still have Bradley & Smart at PG.

The other pieces going both ways is where it gets complicated

NO no no no no

Green doesn't fit what SVG looks for, and that's shooting. and everything else is just crap. i wouldn't mind swapping 1 of Smith or Moose for Green, but i doubt our FO does it. Bos really has nothing else on their roster that would interest us or fill a position of need

I don't get what you guys are hating on here.

Instead of letting Monroe walk for nothing (the most likely option IMO, why would he stay?), we get Kelly Olynyk, a skilled young PF on his rookie contract who can actually space the floor for Drummond.

Instead of banging our heads against the wall with Smith, we ship him out for Green, a two-way SF who can actually space the floor a bit- he's a league average 3 point shooter and can shift up to PF too.

Instead of Singler, who's going to be a free agent in a year, we get James Young, a very young wing from around here with solid two-way potential, on his rookie contract.

Then we just have to swallow Bass's expiring contract and get a few picks out of it? We'd also have to send back Bynum or Datome to make the roster spots work for us, but that's not a bad thing at all.

I don't see what's to get upset about in this deal, unless you really think that either a. We can move Smith for some positive return and keep Monroe b. You are fine with the idea of having Josh Smith be our long term power forward. I'd rather take this deal- at this point I'm convinced that Monroe is a gonner, and I don't want to settle for Smith when I can possibly get a better fit in Olynyk and some other pieces to go with it. This second deal is pretty good.

Most of us would get rid of smith for not a lot of return, but thats only to free up monroe at PF. Now with monroe threatening/not really wanting to resign, some would try and get what they can out of him, but if smith's gone, he would be happy.
The main point here is, there is no reason to get rid of BOTH for not much of a return. Its just getting rid of one that needs to happen. And i think is why monroe still hasnt made a move. If smith is gone, he'll be back.
