I think this could mean Josh's contract suddenly doesn't seem to bad if the talk of there being a big jump in the salary cap is true.

Will teams now be more willing to take on a contract like his?

This is of course dependant on whether Detroit still wants to move him considering the uncertainty of Greg Monroe's FA at the end of the season.

It's going to be an interesting trading deadline for the league this year I think.

If it goes up like they are saying then it definitely looks alot better.

His deal will look like an easy way to clear a huge amount of cap space if the timing is right.

That's all his deal has ever been though.

The drama with shorter contracts though is that a lot of teams will enter each off-season with a lot of space - so an expiring contract doesn't have the value it once did.

I'm not saying we can't get an asset or 2 from it but the days of getting a decent draft pick for an expiring is probably over

Taking back a couple of reasonable role players might be all we can get

Josh Smith's play will have a bigger impact on the value of his contract than a salary cap increase. It's not as if the cap is about to double.

Well sure, if we want to ignore the fact that his contract is nearly only half of the new max contracts out there (assuming the projected increase to $88M BRI.) While Smith not playing like **** is easily the best way to increase his value, comparatively Smith's contract will be more like having someone who is on a 10 million dollar deal under the current cap. I don't think 10 million/year is that bad for Smith's name alone.

Also, Jennings deal will be the new MLE basically.

I believe the new TV deal with come into effect for the 2017 season's cap, where smith will be in the least year of his contract and Jennings will be done his. the only three players on the books for 2017 are smith, KCP and meeks, all in the last year of their contracts.


besides smith's contract being easier to handle with the increasing cap it will only affect them in the first year, really. the pistons would be really smart to extend Drummond during 2016 while the cap is still low and Drummond/his agent would be smart to wait until the offseason to negotiate a contract when the cap officially goes up.

they'll have a hearty amount of cap space next offseason so I think whoever they sign there will be more crucial to their cap flexibility going forward than smith's contract, tbh. they'll have ~17 mil to re-sign guys like jerebko and singler and then add any free agents they choose.

Like has been already mentioned, Smith playing better will have the most impact to make his contract look better.

But, absolutely, salaries are on the rise. Maybe 25% range? That certainly has impact, even next summer. Teams don't have to manage the cap in 2017 - it will just grow so much that teams can overspend before the new TV deal is in effect. So a 14M Josh Smith doesn't look bad at all, especially if he plays well this year. The funny thing is, if Josh Smith plays well this year, do we even want to trade him? And if you say yes, then what PF would we get to replace him (especially with everyone going to overpay free agents next summer)?

That's the sad truth.

I think we all agreed neither Monroe or Smith were ideal fits with Drummond, but if Smith returns to form, he'll be a bargain for a couple years. There won't be another option that would financially make sense via FA. Unless Monroe somehow ends up here beyond this season, we're likely stuck with Smith either way.
