Why? We need a starting SF. Go after Jeff Green already...

We're interested in starting him obviously.

Well I wouldn't say that's obvious. He is no better than Singler. Second of all, if we are going after a SF we should be going after a legitimate starter, not a band-aid.

Budinger would be cheaper in terms of assets and his long range game suits the SVG blueprint.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I'm not interested in cheap assets, especially with the increasing cap. We should be going after a starting SF who can defend and shoot. We have expirings and first rounders to use to make that happen.

Green is terrible, at least Budinger is a good passer and a terrific shooter when healthy, a high IQ guy, Green is inconsistent and will be an awful fit with Smith-Drummond.

There all health concerns with Budinger but if he comes back at a normal level he is a really good fit and he is not that crazy expensive or his contract is that long, Detroit is not a place for top notch FA anyway yet, unless Drummond becomes dominant is not going to be the case, so it wont matter in 2015.

Obvious typo you made there, so I fixed it for ya.

But seriously, I've got no problem trading for Budinger so long as he comes cheaply enough. Speaking strictly as a floor-spacing-3-point-shooter, he's an upgrade over Singler, Butler, and Datome. And even if he started for us this year, that's no guarantee he'll remain a starter forever; as SVG improves our roster, his skills should translate well into a bench role.

So are you opposed to trading a first rounder? If SVG turns this roster into a .500 team (something I think he will do this season) I think it would be wise to package a first rounder or two to bring in a SF who can take us to the next level, especially since those picks won't be lottery picks anyways.

If anything, giving up too much value for a guy like Green is a band aid solution. I love Jeff Green's game, but we'd have to give up a first for him and it's not worth it.

We DRAFTED Chase and traded him in a draft day deal, did we not?

Ahh, more regrets from the Dumars era.

What if Pistons are a playoff team and Pick is somewhere between 16-22 area?

A mid to late first rounder for a guy who is a big athletic defender, great rebounder for his position, and can knock down a 3 and who is also pretty decent at getting his own shot is a small price to pay imo. If it was a lotto pick then I would be with you but a mid to late first rounder and expirings would be a very fair deal for both sides and could vault us into the second round of the playoffs.

Jennings/Augustin
Caldwell-Pope/Meeks
Green/Caldwell-Pope/Butler
Smith/Monroe
Drummond/Monroe

That team is very good defensively, a great rebounding team, well balanced, and pretty deep.

Exactly, and if we made that deal I would be shocked if we weren't a playoff team with SVG at the helm.

Green/Pressey for Bynum/Jerebko/first rounder would be fair.

Green would obviously be an upgrade for us (that's not a very high bar to clear at this point), but he's nowhere near as good as you guys are making him out to be.

To wit:

Career 44% shooter, despite being 6'9"
Career 34% 3P shooter, which is OK but hardly "good"
5.1 rebounds a game in nearly 33 minutes a game is not impressive
Doesn't get steals or blocks; I'd always heard he was an unimpressive defender
Averages more turnovers than assists

Another thought is that SVG wants Budinger just to fill in for Meeks while he is out. He could be our backup SG rather than a SF.

Green is the new Wilson Chandler it seems.

I don't understand the fascination with mediocre wings.
