Josh Smith's shot selection

Post#1 » by Damon_3388 » Fri Oct 31, 2014 5:54 am

We thought "Oh, Stan Van Gundy will keep him in line", but it hasn't happened so far.

In this season's first two games, Smith is 14/38 from the field (.368), including 0/5 from downtown, and 6/20 from outside 10 feet (.300). Obviously Greg Monroe has been out, but you'd think that would allow Smith to play closer to the basket as a 4, but it hasn't happened that way. Seriously, when will this guy learn?! :banghead:

I just don't understand how/why nobody has ever done anything about it. A coach benching him for extended stretches (with the explicit explanation that his shot selection is the problem), teammates calling him out, nothing. Surely it's obvious to everyone how much of a problem his shot selection is, and surely it's causing chemistry issues.

Are people really that "afraid" to call Smith out? Why does this guy get such a free pass? Why has nothing ever been done?

NOT disagreeing. But I got to watch the 2nd half and we are TERRIBLE at creating shots. So.... somebody has to take those shots. The Pistons are one of the worst, if not the worst, at creating good shots. Smoove can actually get close to the rim for some of those misses. I hope that others can get close to the rim better and take better shots and that SVG will remedy this Smoove nonsense.

FWIW, it would be lovely if we could trade Smoove for a TPE (to Philly I guess, but they wouldn't.) It would be nice to see this team with everybody else having an elevated role and without teh Smoove One. Get everybody else involved more, ya know? If we go lottery, then cool. We are probably headed there anyways.

Really should have just kept Middleton and Knight TBH. Both have improved significantly since going to Milwaukee, as you'd expect they would have on any team really, given their age and physical tools and skillsets.

C - Andre Drummond
PF - Greg Monroe
SF - Khris Middleton
SG - Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
PG - Brandon Knight

Balanced, hungry, and full of potential.

Smith was 6/15 today, including 2/5 outside 10 feet and 0/1 from downtown.

Brings his season tally to 20/53 from the field (.377), 8/25 from outside 10 feet (.320), and 0/6 from downtown. He's 9/19 (.474) from the free throw line, too.

That shooting, combined with Greg Monroe's 18/11/3 in 30 minutes off the bench today should lead to 'J-Smoove' riding the pine from now on, surely?

it is bad but it is not bad as drummond's defense. there are almost 1469 topics about smith shots election in this forum but nobody wants to talk about drummond's defens which is way more important.

I don't get where he thinks he's such a great perimeter shooter when he can't make his FTs.
Who does he think he is? Darko?

As badly as Smith has shot, Singler and KCP have shot worse. The offense just is not working well yet. Hopefully with a bit more time in SVG's system things will flow smoother and we'll see better shots more often.

Flat out because Smith is our second best option behind Moose. Our blueprint is, we dont have a reliable scorer on a nightly basis. Its harsh, its tough and its reality. We suck and lack talent.

How long does Joe Johnson have left on his contract? I know we won't be able to trade for him I just know he's way better than Smith.

Drummond has been awful on both ends, it's like he doesn't have any basketball instincts. I'm getting closer and closer to starting an "extend Monroe and trade Drummond" thread.

Fact: Not all of josh Smiths shots are a product of his personal shot selection, a lot of time these offensive sets are designed to have players in certain positions. So its actually also SVG's fault for designing plays that have smith at the 3 point line.

Fact: Josh Smith should not be a primary option, out biggest problem is that we need smith to make jump shots. THINK ABOUT THAT STATEMENT. If smith was regulated to a Faried role, where his job is just to use his athleticism and skill to create havoc, he'd be so much better. I think when Smith starts coming off the bench and playing lesser minutes. We'd be so much happier. Fact is smith doesn't understand value in possession/

Drummond is only 21 and trying to develop a offensive game. Hes playing about as bad as weve ever seen and hes still averaging right around 12, 10 and 2 at about 50% fg in 26mpg. He will snap out of it im sure.

I'd actually consider this, due to the fact that monroe is more a sure thing at least offensively as a center, where as Dre is still a potential and other teams would give a crap load to get him. HOWEVER

Moose can't be extended, so Dre is now our future.

He looks awful and predictable, the only advantage he has on either end is his size and I don't see that ever changing. Our whole offense is struggling because we're trying to give him opportunity and space in the paint. Don't think for a second that Smith isn't being told to hang out on the perimeter.

The Smith bashing is just habitual and lazy. The fact we need to face is this team just isn't very good.

I don't see Smith jacking up shots early in the clock outside of the design of the offense. Somebody has to shoot and he's often put in a position to do so. Others have shot a dismal percentage as well.

Part of his problem last year was playing out of position. But another very important issue is his being miscast as a first or even second scoring option. We just don't have enough talent to let him play his best role.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

News flash, Were a crap team. We should have been giving him all these touches along time ago so he can learn. Screw trading our best young piece so we can make 30 year old dumb ass Smith more comfortable. Smith needs to either go to the farthest end of the bench or be traded because he is a joke. Hes been in this league a long time and is making 14 mil a year while playing dumber then 99% of rookies that come into the league. I dont care if we lose everynight letting Dre develop his game but watching 30 year old Josh Smith chuck away terrible shots is just asinine.

Lol good to know I'm not the only person cringing when they run the offense through Dre. He's just not ready yet to be relied on the post but on the same token, we don't really have too many options with how this team is built. Unless we make a splash through trades, this season will be tough to watch.

Lol, theres other big men that cant shoot but they dont continuously do it every night. He needs to take it inside at all times or pass it off. Hell at this point its no different then just letting Drummond hoist long 2s and 3s. He can get inside but hes hell bent on thinking hes a shooter. Theres a reason hes always so wide open on those midrange shots. Its in the opposing teams game plans.
