It's Been 10 Years Since "The Malice At The Palace"

Kind of shocking it was that long ago. I know some of the board members are a bit older and remember stuff from the Bad Boys Era, but I was 11 years old when this happened. Just hard to imagine.
I'll find the link of Stephen Jackson and what he had to say about it on Dan LeBetard's show later. It was interesting. When all the Pacers were in the lockerroom, I think he said it was Ron Artest, looked over and asked "do you think we're going to get in trouble?"

Another fun story from that night was Kid Rock and Chris Chelios were there like they were a lot during those years and when it all broke out Kid Rock looked at Cheli and said to the effect "Let's go" as in let's rush the floor and fight the Pacers and Chelios had to keep Kid from joining the brawl. Imagine that Sports Center moment - Kid Rock fighting Ron Artest. That would have probably lead to a complete riot and other fans would have joined KR, who was still pretty popular at the time.

I think Stephen Jackson's comments are in there.
and Billups:
Of all the imagery from that night, the one that sticks out the most to Billups was seeing a 64-year old man in tears after the game, Pistons coach Larry Brown. It contributed to Billups calling it “one of the darker days of my career”.
“Crying, real tears man,” Billups said. “He’s a big stickler of respect the game, this is the best game in the world, handle it with grace. We gave the game as a whole a black eye. A memorable night for anybody who was there or watching, memorable in the worst way.”

“After we calmed down, [Artest] looked at me like, ‘Jack, you think we going to get in trouble?’ Jamaal Tinsley fell out laughing. I said, ‘Are you serious, bro? Trouble? Ron, we’ll be lucky if we have a freaking job.’ That lets me know he wasn’t in his right mind, to ask that question.” —Stephen Jackson

At this point I'm only here for Drummond and the hope the next Lebron/Kobe/Jordan is born 20 minutes away from Detroit so we can "win" the lottery.

Lmaoo so true my friend. Same here. Im hoping Drummond can be special. Hopefully his performance this year has alot to do with growing as an adult and handling more responsibility.

the aftermath was some of the darkest days of RealGm. Even the presence of this thread worries me. I think I avg 4 death threats/rape of wife and kids a day on RealGM and it was sanctioned and endorsed by the mods.

Was at the Palace that day, I was only 9. I remember crying in my dad's arms of fear. Man it really put a dent in my childhood...

I remember being a lurker back in those days and that disgusted me how it was open season on det fans around here.Thats why it took me so long to officaly sign up,I didnt want to deal with any of that bull and stayed at another board, until I came across RG again.

As a Mod around that time I couldn't agree more.
I know we're not supposed to backseat Mod but I'd prefer thus thread was locked/deleted.
The things I could/should say about that time...I'd rather stay off Howard Mass' radar

Oh, I was unaware it was such a problem on the forum.
You know, it was just brought up a lot again, basically everywhere, and some of the comments from the players involved are still very eye-opening.

The worst thing of that article, is the fan that threw a chair and the fan that "attempted to fight" Jermaine O'Neal.
The chair thrower is pure lawyer speak.. The fan vs Jermaine somehow doesn't remember that. OK, that's believable.
To the actual fight, it looked awful (Tv Viewed). Refs had a weak link at it showed. Pistons may have lit the match (well more the fan " who didn't understand physics at the time"), but the Pacers built the fire.
And the aftermath was an absolutely bad time to be a Pistons fan. A small fraction of the Posters seemed to go to that game, none of them fought, and we were all being blamed for being Pistons fans. That was the logic.
Pacers cursed themselves afterwards, and Joe Dumars blindly guessed on picking up new players.

I vividly remember the scene and where I was standing as I watched the game in living room. I remember how I felt about the butt kicking Detroit was getting prior to the incident. I remember the thuggish posturing of the Pacers. I remember the trash Artest talked to Ben and the unnecessarily hard foul he put on Ben that sparked Ben going at Artest.
My mindset was let's see if Artest is really tough enough to take the butt whipping he's about to receive. But dude with all of his insanity looked really sane and calm when it came to fighting Ben Wallace. Artest wanted no parts of Ben.
That incident marked the death of a Pacers team who was probably the best team in the NBA at that time.

My wife and kids were at the game in the Kelly Services suite (wife was director of HR at an automotive company that used Kelly for all their new hires). I was out of town for work in Nashville and never saw the game, just the film clips later. I hadn't joined RealGM yet but had been lurking since mid-2003 and remember all the crap that came over. I don't give a hoot about something negative/insulting that someone posts on a computer screen so it was comical to me to read the attacks and counterattacks.

A lot of Pacer fans on Real GM, and far too many fans from random teams came in here trashing everyone...and begun the flame war had!
A bunch of guys went to the Indiana board and returned serve...only to cop suspensions!
Not one fan that came in here was suspended, because we don't Mod like that here (still don't from what I can tell)
When more and more dudes got suspended a whole load of us left this place and created our own forum...I believe my PMs are disabled to this day because I used my position as Mod to PM people about the site we built!
As Mod at that time I was/am absolutely disgusted that TPTB allowed the situation to go the way it did AND deal out the punishments they did in such an uneven manner.
This forum was once my home! I spent hours upon hours here, years! And for our guys to ve treated like that...well, let's just say this place will never be home, regardless of my posting habits elsewhere.

current posters may not know this but in 2002-4 the Pistons board was as big as the Raptors board. It was one of the 4 biggest team boards on RealGM. It was the best modded forum on the internet. The Malace changed that and the thug wanna be of RealGM came out and we were hunted down.
I will say in Howard Mass defense he finally put a stop to it after 6 months and he made a promise that it would never happen again and I fully intend to hold him to that promise.

I was unaware of the promise.
I will also say that TPTB are far more open today than they were back then. You've got Howard doing announcements all the time which give people insight

Even now, looking back, I don't know how this gets all pinned on the fans. This all started because one fan threw a drink. Sports fans have thrown far worse many times and it never amounted to anything like this.
I also was unaware of the backlash Pistons fans were taking. I understand some of it, but Philly fans have thrown batteries...I think we're pretty tame haha.
As a high school kid at the time, this was almost a "cool" thing to see. In hindsight...yea not quite.
