I like Smith. Considering the crap we have at SF and on the bench, Pistons will continue to lose. 12 Assists and 9 Rebounds is pretty darn good.

we already know the good about smith. he's an excellent defender when engaged (not very often,) he's a gifted playmaker for his position, and he is a pretty good rebounder due to his length and athleticism.
it's the bad and the ugly about him that drives everyone nuts. for example, he absolutely stuffed the stat sheet against the warriors like you said. he even had 4 steals and a block with only one turnover, but 6-18 from the field?? you expect him to be sh/it at the free throw line, but there is not one player on this team i'd feel comfortable with taking 18 shots, and even if i was, it sure as hell wouldn't be smith.
it's not that people don't recognize the good things he does; it's that we recognize the bad things he does that completely offset it that drives us crazy.

This Josh Smith is a great defender myth has always been a head scratcher. He's actually a criminally underrated shot blocker for his position but so many struggle to differentiate shot blocking from overall defender.

Nice post. Well stated. I just wanted to take the bait.
Folks are always looking for someone to blame for a mess.
This team is inconsistent across the board. Augustin shooting 25% from the arc. Jerebko shooting 1 for 9 in his last 5 games. Drummond going from a nice 3 game stretch to scoring 2 total points against the Warriors. KCP is all over the place.
The sad thing is, I think they can get worse... with a possible dumpster fire of a trade I fear happening before Xmas.

In the last 5 games, Smith is taking an average of 16 shots and only shooting 39% from the field. His assists have been nice but are negated by his offense. Look at Jennings last year, he put up 8 assists a game but because he took 14 shots a game on sub 40% shooting- he was a negative asset- the same is true for Smith.
If Smith had the ball IQ to stop shooting when he's clearly cold, then he would be much more well received. Smith is obviously talented but he's just a low IQ player who is not being reigned in by coach so he's killing us offensively,
Ideally, Smith should be brought off the bench with the 2nd unit and act as the point forward instead of letting Augustin bog down the offense with his excessive dribbling. I think there is a way to utilize Smith so that he's not so detrimental to the team and that is by limiting his offensive attempts and having him focus on rebounding, shot blocking and passing.
If Smith were taking 8-10 shots a game, I don't think he'd have nearly the amount of hate directed towards him but because he is literally our least efficient offensive player and is leading us in shot attempts, people rightly criticize him. If SVG wants this team to look better both offensively and defensively then he must rein in Josh Smith.

This is true.
It seems like he's getting to the basket more often this season, but is missing layups at an incredible rate. The last game V the warriors he only took maybe 4 or 5 jumpers the rest of his missed shots were at the basket.
It's insane to think he still can't be efficient even when he takes less outside shots.

Pistons are -10.9 per 48 with Josh Smith on the court and +6.3 with him off.
We could trade him for a washing machine & instantly be a much better team.

The problem is that this isn't necessarily true. The reason we're + when he's off the floor is because we have a player like Monroe to step in. You take away Josh Smith, and then Monroe becomes our only PF worth playing. When Monroe comes off the floor we have...Jerebko? And then you have to factor in that we won't have a backup center, so we would be playing Anthony with JJ for stretches?
It's unfortunately not as simple as just benching or trading him.

It actually is quite simple. For the 54 mill we are paying Josh we could easily find 3 or 4 solid backup 4's.
Plus SVG's offense is dynamite with 1 big & 4 shooters so we can rotate Monroe & Drummond at the 5 for some of the game & use that money to invest in shooters.
We're already 15th best on D which is a large improvement with some dogs still on d (Josh/Singler).
We could be light years better by just losing Josh.

Quantity doesn't mean jack. I don't care if you could get 15 players better than Smith for his contract. Especially mid season. We aren't going to find a quality backup mid season that wants to sign on this team. My point stands. Trading Josh Smith today, doesn't "instantly make this team better". It's more complex than just shipping a guy out for a soda machine.

It'd be nice if he could assist us in winning a game.

Before the game they showed Smith's stats for the Last 5 games and he's averaged like 15 points, 7 boards, and 8 assists. That is actually kind of impressive considering the postition he's playing
