Pistons asking first-round pick for disgruntled Greg Monroe

According to NBA rules, Pistons forward Greg Monroe is now eligible to be traded. And, sources told Sporting News, he wants that, badly. But teams seeking Monroe will need to cough up a first-round pick, and that’s a sticking point.

Monroe was a restricted free agent this summer, but was unable to attract a sizable offer from another team—in part, because teams feared the Pistons would match the offer and later use Monroe as a trade chip, and in part, because no one is quite sure how much Monroe is worth. Monroe’s agent, David Falk, had several potential sign-and-trade deals in place, but the Pistons were unwilling to add to an already bloated payroll, and passed.

Instead, Monroe had to sign Detroit’s $5.5 million qualifying offer, making him a Piston for this year, and allowing him to be an unrestricted free agent next summer. As part of that contract, under NBA rules, Monroe is allowed to veto any trade the Pistons come up with before February’s trading deadline.

But that won’t happen, a source with knowledge of the situation told Sporting News. Detroit is off to a brutal 5-19 start, and Monroe would be happy to exit stage left—though the Pistons want a first-rounder to help with their rebuilding in return.

“Everyone knows he wants out of there,” the source told SN. “There is almost nothing he would shoot down.”

The Pistons have a few problems when it comes to moving Monroe, though.

First, it’s been difficult to put a value on Monroe. If you go back to his second season in the league, Monroe averaged 15.4 points and 9.7 rebounds. His production has pretty much remained there ever since, and his PER has actually decreased incrementally in each season since. It doesn’t help that Monroe has mostly been on bad teams.

I think we will end up getting a 1st for him. Hes highly valuable to alot of playoff teams even as a rental. Spurs for instance will probably give it alot of consideration.

I don't buy this..HoopsHype reporting Monroe uninterested and wants to keep bird rights..I don't think people know either way.

It's BS. Bird rights mean nothing if he wants out. The Pistons having his Bird rights won't get him any more money or years in a sign and trade.

Yep, the only way they're relevant to him is if he wants to stay with the team he's traded to. For what it's worth though rumors from HoopsHype or Sporting News aren't anything to invest much in.

If (when ) Detroit loses Monroe and Suh, i'll be very annoyed.

If he is set on leaving, i hope we get at least something in return for him.

I'd trade him for a first in a heart beat. Better than losing him for nothing. He can't be too happy here with his role.

If this story is true, then it probably means that Monroe has a team picked out for next year that will have cap space, so he doesn't care about his Bird rights. So he could be a short term rental for any team this year. But teams don't want to give up a first for a rental, unless it a very, very late first. Might as well trade him if he isn't going to be here next year.

Pass. He's not the type of player we need to build around (physically limited mental midgets). He could have signed here but didn't give us the time of day then ran to Phoenix. Now he's pouting because he isn't starting.

I don't doubt that Monroe wants out of here ASAP. Who could blame him?

Still though, I'd be surprised if he wanted out badly enough to wave his bird rights.

Mind you, I was shocked he wanted out badly enough to take the QO, so I've been put in my place before when it comes to GM, but still, yeah, I'd be surprised.

If its the case we have absolutely no incentive to go along with it without a first rounder or something else of comparable value, though. At this point I doubt we could get that for him, though.

Its evident though that he doesn't view things the way other players do, so its entirely possible he'll be willing to blow the financials and put his next contract in jeopardy if he really wants out that badly.

If he indeed is willing to waive bird rights, that does change the situation significantly.

Of course, this also wouldn't be the first time we've been fed a load of BS with respect to the Monroe situation.

Good post. It's highly unbelievable Monroe would sacrifice his full power (ie bird rights etc) to get out here this year. Id be shocked if a team gave us a first rd pick for him, we have no leverage & everyone knows that.

With that said, IF we could get a first rounder for Monroe (frankly, I'd even take a late one) and could get a bag of Doritos and a spam sandwich for Jennings/Smith, it would pretty much make my decade.

And I hate spam.
