OMG, Christmas came early. Josh is out!

Per Goodwill, we have used the stretch provision on him. So his salary will be stretched out over 5 years. Now, perhaps we can finally see Monroe/Drummond start until seasons end.

Gotta say though, while I am glad Smith is out- SVG shouldve traded him this offseason but atleast SVG finally realized that Smith was terrible for this team.

I wonder if this will signal the signing of Monroe long term next.

I'm genuinely surprised. Still will suck, but now I expect Brandon Jennings to be close behind him.

Stunning. I've checked the calendar several times, it's not April 1st.

Oh wow, stretch or not? is just an awful awful move, I understand is difficult to work with him or trade him, but is 26m there for 2 more years….

And nope, no one is going to pick him off the waivers, only Philly got capspace and they are not going to be interested.

SVG's comments on the release basically signal the tank. Glad to hear.

Gundy made the right move. No reason to lose assets over Smith.

Holy ****, This made my holiday weekend. This a clear sign of Stan trying to show Monroe he wants him. Be prepared for a 5 year max to Monroe now. I could tell something was up when Stan wasnt giving him hardly any minutes anymore.

We had to deal with the money anyway, no one was gonna trade for him, now we can develop as a team without that cancer.

Great day in Pistons history

Gotta say, this comes as a bit of a shock.

I know he's been all kinds of awful, but this is out of the blue enough to make me think there's something else going on other than just his bad play.

That is absolutely insane! That's a huge contract to just waive.

It also tells me there was ZERO interest in Smith across the league that would be at all beneficial to Detroit.

It also significantly hurts our ability to get a top 5 pick as well.

Mixed emotions (mostly joy!). I wanted him gone, but understood his importance in our ability to fail into a top pick.

How much does he count towards our cap? His contract had 3 years 14 mill left each year

Yeah right. We are better off swallowing that deal. He literally destroys the culture and Morale makeup of the team.

We pay him his full salary over the next 5 years per some "stretch provision". The tank is ON! Hit the floor for Okafor!!

5.4mil for 5 years with the cap going up? Frankly, that doesn't even sound too awful, compared to losing Monroe and having to keep Smith for two more years.

Can someone remind me, when we waive a player if he gets claimed off of waivers, whatever amount he's paid is deducted from our amount owed to him over the remainder of his waived contract, correct?

Perhaps SVG did the math and figured it was better to release Josh, use the stretch provision and take whatever relief we get from the waiver process than to take on other bad/multi-year contracts that would lock up more cap space.

Either way, bold move but probably the right one if he wants any chance of retaining Moose.

Seems bad for us to have a cap hit for 5 years rather than just the two... in the summer of 2017 we will have less capspace because of this.... We had better use the capspace this summer or its a worthless move.

5.2mil for 5 years with the cap going up? Frankly, that doesn't even sound too awful, compared to losing Monroe and having to keep Smith for two more years.

Exactly. Even in the Sacto trade they would have to take back Landry or Thompson, you are owed 5-6 mil per year for the next 3 seasons. This is basically that move while tacking 2 more years on and not giving up any assets for a salary dump. Considering the team is loaded with cap space each upcoming summer and no one really outside of Monroe & Drummond to spend it on, it's not really going to hurt all that much.
