Post-Josh Smith Pistons Era: New Starting Lineup/Rotation?

Post#1 » by treefi » Mon Dec 22, 2014 9:17 pm

Our team has not performed the way we had expected throughout the first third of the season and adjustments need to be made in terms of our focus and direction,” said Stan Van Gundy, Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations for the Detroit Pistons. “We are shifting priorities to aggressively develop our younger players while also expanding the roles of other players in the current rotation to improve performance and build for our future. As we expand certain roles, others will be reduced. In fairness to Josh, being a highly versatile 10-year veteran in this league, we feel it’s best to give him his freedom to move forward. We have full respect for Josh as a player and a person.” - SVG

What do you think? Here is what would be obvious(imo)...

C - Drummond / Anthony
PF - Monroe / Jerebko
SF - Singler / Butler / Martin
PG - Jennings / Augustin / Dinwiddie
SG - Caldwell-Pope / Meeks
6th - Meeks
7th - Butler
8th - Jerebko
9th - Augustin
10th - Anthony
11th - Dinwiddie
12th - Martin

Do we make a trade? Do you see any surprises moving forward with our rotation or starting lineup?

There was speculation that KCP would get to the bench with Meeks back, but I doubt that happens. I also hope that Dinwiddie takes all of Augustin's minutes at backup PG.

I hope we can move Butler or Singler to a contending team for a late first. I hope to see our primary rotation look like this

Jennings/Dinwiddie
KCP/Meeks
Singler or Butler/KCP
Monroe/Jerebko
Drummond/Monroe

With Martin, Datome and Mitchell getting spot minutes.

D.J. Augustin's play this year has been very unfortunate... Was really hoping he could split minutes with Jennings and eventually take the starting PG position from him. D.J. has been downright AWFUL this year. :nonono:

Augustin last year: 14.9ppg, 2.1rpg, 5.0apg, 41.9 fg%, 41.1 3%, 88.2 ft%, 30.4mpg
Augustin this year: 8.6ppg, 1.8rpg, 3.6apg, 35.4 fg%, 25.7 3%, 81.7 ft%, 22.4mpg

Yeah, tough to argue.

Augustin hasn't even been an upgrade over Will Bynum, let alone Jennings. Disappointing, but not shocking.

I would LOVE to see Dinwiddie take Augustin's minutes. I guess I'm one of the few who believes KCP can defend the 3(well, 80% of SF's or so).

My dream lineup/rotation would be:

C - Drummond / Monroe / Anthony
PF - Monroe / Jerebko
SF - Caldwell-Pope / Singler / Butler
PG - Jennings / Dinwiddie / Augustin
SG - Meeks / Caldwell-Pope / Dinwiddie
6th - Jerebko
7th - Singler
8th - Dinwiddie
9th - Augustin
10th - Butler

I take the "moving forward with the youth" means Drummond / Monroe / KCP /Dinwiddie.

Butler / Meeks / Augustin / Anthony likely aren't going anywhere as those are Stan's guys he brought in to help change the culture.

Jennings / Jerebko / Singler / Mitchell may want to keep a bag packed, though I imagine Jennings is the only one who'll be actively shopped.

I thought Augustin was going to be a great fit with SVG/Drummond.

I was wrong. :banghead: Should have put more value into my opinion of him as a player every year in the league besides the last... :nonono:

What do you think we'd be looking for in return for Jennings? I don't want Augustin starting, and while I have high hopes for Dinwiddie in the future, I do not think he is anywhere close to being ready to start this year.

I hope we could get rid of Augustin / Jennings somehow

I wonder if Charlotte would take Jennings/Singler for Stephenson and we can let Lance run the point as the ultimate tank commander

I still got us trading Jerebko, Augustine, or Singler for Jeff Green or hopefully Wilson Chandler.

Either way this season has really hurt my feelings man, I was bragging on the Pistons making the playoffs this season.

I expect to see a lot of Dinwiddie, Drummond and KCP. I originally didn't think we would make any trades, but now with Smith exiting, I really believe one of Jennings/Augustin will be gone by deadline.

Might as well force feed the young guys, season has been over and we need to keep the tank rolling for top 3 pick.

Like others said I see Dinwiddie getting most of the backup PG minutes.

3 years, $27 millon for Stephenson(2 years after this year)? I'd like to clear as much cap space as possible in any trades we make this year. I keep reading about the Lakers having interest in Jennings...

What about Jennings for Jeremy Lin? I believe he'll be a UFA next year. Seems like L.A. management would have to be severely flawed to make that deal... Unless Kobe hates Lin? I dunno.

I'd love to package Jennings & Singler for a contract similar to Jennings' and a protected 1st. That might be too optimistic though. Our best bet is likely attempting to showcase him and waiting for a contender to lose their PG to injury. At this point there's no obvious suitor outside of maybe the Lakers buying in, all the teams without a real pg are out of the playoff picture at this point.

Stephenson is getting paid 9M guaranteed this year and next. His third year is a team option. Meaning his contract is nearly identical to Jennings

I would do the Lin for Jennings deal esp since Jennings loves Kobe and Lin has made comments about wanting more shots and wanting to take more game winners.

If Gores does the Lin for Jennings deal you know he is dedicated to this team bc it would mean he would be spending an extra 7-8M due to the structure of Lin's deal (15M total paid out, 8M hit against the cap)

If Charlotte included a top 10 protected 1st, I'd do Lance for Jennings/Singler. I don't see much incentive for Charlotte short of getting Lance out of the building, but Jennings could provide a huge upgrade for them as their 3rd guard/Kemba backup.

Jennings, top 7 protected pick for Lawson? Denver might be looking to blow things up...
